Under 8’s
This week the 2 under 8 teams combined to make the Hotspurs U8 Dream Team. With the added depth in the squad the team lived up to its name and played some quality football. The skills on display were remarkable, Bill in goals used all parts of his body to stop shots – including his head. Sam chipped in with a couple of brilliant goals after some lovely lead-up work and passing from Obi. Abbey was a rock in defence, putting her body on the line on more than one occasion, while Jess showed of her skills in the middle of the park, displaying some footwork David Beckham would be proud of. Cody used all the skills he has been working on at training, his dribbling and passing was first class and saw him take out the award this week. Alexander raised the bar this week, he managed to thread the ball like a needle through the opposition with some pin point passing. Jack again ran hard all day and made some bone crunching tackles which lifted the team when they really needed it. Sury prowled around the forward line, picking the pockets of the United defence and creating several chances and lending his hand to several of the Spurs goals. Overall an inspirational performance by the Dream Team. With rumours of additional signings to boost the depth of the squad even further, both the Gold and Black teams will be forces to be reckoned with for the remainder of the season.
U9 White v St Pats (we won in a non-competitive way)
With 3 away we were in desperate need of reinforcements. Thanks to U8 Cody and Jack for stepping up for us. Both kids had a very good game and Cody made the save of the match when in goals, using not his hands, that would be too easy, he headed the ball off the line.
Lachlan and Brodie caused their defence no end of trouble and when Lachlan finally got his balance and ball striking together he smashed an unstoppable cracking left foot drive that would’ve been difficult to stop in any grade. Reese was outstanding in defence and being so reliable at the back he gives the team great confidence to push forward and attack. Tomoki is showing great vision and game awareness, by moving in to space when going forward and also in defence by dropping in where most needed, his on ball skill is very good also.
The award this week was thoroughly deserved and went to Lucy. She was in the thick of some bustling midfield battles, got hit in the eye with the ball and even commented to me how she was playing even better after it. Lucy had a short spell on the side after blocking an opponent’s pass that knocked the wind out of her. To her credit and bravery she didn’t stay out of the game for long and was back out there and almost scored her first goal. Well done Lucy and team, keep up the good work and you’ll keep improving individual and as a team.
Under 11’s V Wodonga Heart
On a very cold and foggy early morning we all gathered at Willow Park. Every player in the squad (12) scored at least one goal as we rotated
positions so as to give everyone a go up forward. Some even played with their arms crossed trying to keep warm. It was great to see the excitement as some players scored their first goals for the season.
Well done boys.
A reminder to all that ‘sideline coaching’ is not ok and that the players do not need ongoing instructions yelled from the coach or the supporters.
The occasional ‘shoot’ or ‘cross it’ is ok, however please keep it to encouragement only, ‘well done’, ‘great play’ etc. I am working on this aspect of my coaching and would like every supporter to do the same. Sit back and enjoy the game, let the players play and the coach coach.
Next weeks game is against Wangaratta in Myrtleford so let’s hope it isn’t even colder than last week.

The Ressies were desperate for a win and the first 10 mins showed that with Chris Vidovic just missing the goal to open the scoring. 0-0 at the break the floodgates began to open up but it was Heart who managed to score the opening 2 goals off the counter attack. It would take a lot of character to come back from that and it was the last 20 mins we started to pile on the pressure. First Will Clifton scored with a beautiful left foot curler, then Brendan O’Neill scored off a cross to level the scores. We had numerous chances to make it 3-2 including Matt Townsend hitting the post. But with about 5 mins left Jeremy Norton earned a penalty with Matt Townsend converting from the spot to complete the comeback win.
Ladies V Myrtleford Lost 0 – 3
After making the foggy trip to Myrte; we were faced with the cold, a club ref and a game running over thirty minutes late. The girls went into the game thinking positive and hoping for a good result. We had a great first half effort, holding Myrtleford off in the midfield with the defence supporting this valiantly. We went into the second half at nil all, but unfortunately the opposition jumped on an early mistake made in defence and scored the first goal of the game. The girls attempted to keep their heads high, pushing the ball forward and creating some great opportunities up front. Despite our best efforts up front, the girls just couldn’t secure a goal and we ended up with two more goals against us. A disappointing result for the girls this week, lets keep our spirits high and continue to work hard at training.
Seniors V Wodonga Heart Won 2 – 1
Another solid performance from the Seniors. Backing up from 2-2 draw against United the previous week. Things didn’t start off well when Ben Porta was forced off early in the match. We had numerous chances to blow the game wide open but only held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to Nick Musarra. After the break we managed to double the lead thanks to substitute Matt Townsend. Heart managed to get one back which created a
few nervous moments towards the end but managed to hold out for the win. The key to our victory was our solid defence lead by Jon Cochrane and Matt Clement. Hopefully Spurs can continue this momentum into their next game against Myrtleford.
