Match Reports
U12s v Melrose won 3-1
U16 v Cobram drew 1-1
The Under 16s played their get-out-of-jail-free card on Sunday when they scraped to a 1-1 draw. Perhaps it was the small ground, perhaps it was the sunshine, but whatever the reason the team wasn’t quite on song for much of the match. The first half was a struggle with Cobram having most of the chances but neither team was able to score. After a fairly blunt half-time address from John and Joel the team played better in the second half but Cobram managed to snatch a goal early on to much jubilation from the home supporters. The Spurs stepped up their efforts after that and had a few opportunities but keeper Scott was still kept busy. With time beginning to run out, a good run of play saw Felix get the equaliser. That galvanised the team and suddenly the fire was back. They were unlucky not to score another goal but the opposition continued to press and the backline did well to prevent more than one Cobram shot on goal. A fine effort by the team to claw their way back from being behind.
Reserve Men v Cobram won 4-0
With so many players unavailable the Ressies scrapped together a bare eleven of sixteens, over 35’s and anyone else we could find. To their credit the team them went on to have their best win of the year. Robert Tuksar playing his second game of the year grabbed two goals. John Cobra Belgre turned back the years with a vintage performance in defence and Ben Gardiner and Ray Krausche from the sixteens combined to score a great goal. Well done and thanks to all who helped out on Sunday
Senior Ladies v Cobram lost 5-0
A superb effort today, with Cobram scoring less than half the number of goals since our last meet (11-0). There were also some spectacular shots on goal which tested their goal keeper but could not quite make it to the back of the net. The ladies played well for the full 90 minutes, despite only having one player on the bench and warm weather to wear them down.
The defense caught Cobram offside numerous times by moving up quickly to keep the line high and catch them off guard. Jordan, Millie and Sammy shut down the fast players and passes through.
Weavers was once again amazing in goals, stopping shots on goal and pressuring the opposition into shooting wide or over. Sarsha, Sara and Annie were calm and in control of the ball on the wings. Anna and Jamie complemented each other beautifully in the centre, and Jess sent some skillful passes through for the wings to run onto.
Special mention to Shelby, for coming closest to scoring. After a spectacular play up the field led to a shot on goal, Shelby followed through and stole the ball from their keeper to have her own attempt at goal. Unfortunately she was surrounded by Cobram’s defense, one of which whom managed to get in the space between the ball and goals to narrowly deflect the shot.
Senior Men v Cobram lost 0-6
The seniors found it tough against the new League champions on Sunday. The players worked hard but things did not go our way. Joel McDonough had plenty of work in goal and was outstanding.
