• Each team has one rostered home day DUTY during the season.  This team must prepare the playing field ( put up nets etc.) 7.30am START and pull down nets and put away equipment at the end of the day, about 5pm FINISH and provide three people to assist in the canteen on that day.

The award for our best report using the word of the week “chocolate” judged by the newsletter editor (me) goes to Roland Linssen of the U16s, (another win for the U16s),  pick up your drink prize from the canteen at the next home game.  The word for the next report is “conquest”.

We encourage all grades to submit match reports to go in the newsletter. Reports need to be sent each week to wrights@dragnet.com.au before 10pm on the Monday after the game so they can be collated. Saturday 18th April Willow Park -Wodonga

All Hotspurs teams to meet at the Hotspurs Marquee at 9:30 am
Teams will be organised and playing shirts distributed.

Match reports

Under 11s V Wangaratta Lost 3 – 5
Wang jumped out of the blocks fast and before we knew it we were down a couple of goals. Our team captain for the day was Tomoki and he got us a goal back before half-time after being put through with a nice pass he ran on and struck a clean left footer into the goal giving their keeper no chance.
At half-time, we restructured the defence bringing Harrison and Hamayun into the centre (3 & 4) and they dominated to give the team a good platform to build from. The team never gave up we and we soon found the back of the net again with some great close ball skill and a calm finish by Jack. The team kept piling on the pressure and after a scramble in the box, Ava managed to find a way to get hold of the ball and score and we were then 3 – 4 down. We tried and tried and couldn’t get the equaliser. Eventually we won a free kick out side the area. Ava, first game back from international swimming duty, stepped up and hit a thunderbolt which bounced off the keeper and onto the crossbar and back out again, very unlucky. Then with only seconds remaining, Wang got through on goal a scored their 5th.
Ian was as solid as ever in goals and all players contributed well.
The Sodens award for Round 4 goes to Tomoki who captained the team, lead by example and score a great goal to keep us in the game.
Hamayun picks up the Wendy’s award this week having a strong defensive game and distributing the ball well in possession.

Most players then doubled up and played U12s and played very well against the older boys and I was very proud of how you performed.

Under 12s V Wangaratta Lost 1 – 2
A very depleted Twelve Boys played very well last Sunday. With seven regulars missing the elevens stepped up to help form a team. The game was close and the effort of all players was terrific. Thanks to all the 11s who helped out and special mention to Bailey, Kristian,Noah and Nathan who led the younger players so well.

Under 12s Girls V Wangaratta Won 4 – 0
Well done to the under-12 girls who this week were able to field a full side, it was great to welcome Lucy into the team who did a great job in midfield and then defence. Daisy also played her first game for the 12 girls and provided fresh legs running around all the players. Paige scored her first goal and placed it perfectly into the back of the net. Mattea and Caitlyn worked hard all day winning the ball and passing well, with Ava having a great game, working hard all over the field. Bella G held the defence together well and was supported by Grace and Eliza. Evy and Alyssa teamed up well upfront and no offside from the girls this week (Thanks Roy for the help at training last week) Lil also kept a clean sheet and pulled off some great saves in goals. Under 14s Girls V Wangaratta Won 4 – 0
A solid game for the girls who passed the ball around well. With a few girls away on holidays we called on several Under 12s to support the team. Thanks to Ava, Grace, Evy and Bella G for backing up and playing two games, we can’t do it without you girls and appreciate the support. Yasmin and Laura had great games in defence. Sarsha finished a couple of very nice goals. We also welcomed Aimee into the 14 girls team who played a great first game. Bella and Tynecia shared a half in goals and kept a clean sheet. Well Done Girls!! Awards to: Aimee, Grace and Laura.

Under 16s V Wangaratta Lost 2 – 6
No Uptown Funk for the U16 Boys this week, but rather a lesson in football. With a few players out due to holidays and Rep games the team was gratefully boosted by the presence of Scottie in goals, and Manny and Denzel on the field. The first few minutes of the game saw some sharp passing and good pressure from both teams, making it appear a quite even contest. However, like a Snickers bar in the swimming pool, appearances can be deceptive, and a sharp cross from a Wang winger saw Wang’ first goal. With Spurs heads’ down, Wang capitalised again. There was a rally from Spurs and some hard work in the backline by Manny and Charters resulted in some plausible pushes forward, but like finding an Easter egg under your bed in January, there seemed some doubt about the authenticity. But an old Easter egg is still chocolate, and some players mustered the interest to take the wrapper off and see what lay beneath. A near miss from Zac and some good vision from Oscar saw some shots

toward the Wang goal. A nice pass from Oscar to Denzel finally saw the ball hit the net. But Wang had other ideas and like the Milky Way kid , a Wang sharpshooter knocked in a third before half time. Coach John let the boys know there was room for improvement, but the second half started wobbly with a quick goal to Wang followed soon after by another. At 5-1 down, the lights came on and Spurs started to play, and with some accurate passing and attacking play from Ollie and Ben there were some good pushes through the middle and wings. Despite the upturn in Spurs’ work rate, a 6th Wang goal came. Spurs found some of the drive lacking in the first ¾ of their game and continued to press forward, contesting more balls, putting the pressure on and making their passes count. Not surprisingly their efforts were rewarded with more opportunities. A fine corner kick from Zac found Denzel’s head for a sweet goal. Sadly though, it was too little too late. Thanks to the U14s who made
such a solid contribution. As to the lesson, football is like a box of chocolates, forget the mint ones and fight hard for the rest.

Thirds V Wangaratta Won 3 – 0

Over 35s V Wangaratta Lost 1 – 3
Last Sunday we welcomed Pat Westwood to our team for his first game with us. With some good passages of play in the first-half and after a dazzling display of footwork and some unselfish play from Ben we secured a goal to Spurs in the 20th minute. Unfortunately we let Wang back in the game and it was 1-1 at the break. We lost our structure during substitutions with the opposition capitalising on some silly mistakes resulting in some soft goals to them in the second half. Although it is ‘early days’ in the comp we need to learn to be more comprehensive in our game plan.

Reserve Women Gold V Wangaratta Won 4 – 1
A great game from the reserve gold team! We held our shape well and had possession for the majority of the game which was great to see. Caitie and Carissa were dominant in midfield and worked together well. Jess A scored a great first goal after a beautiful assist from Imogen. Alex created plenty of chances but was unlucky not to finish with a goal. Kaylah scored a great goal after following in the ball and Jess B finished with two great goals after a super sub from Fi (after she fell over and onto the ball and couldn’t run anymore!!. The defence were strong as ever and were lead by Taylah and Megan. A great game in goals from Snowy and Megan sharing the role although it looks like Megan may miss a few weeks after hurting her knee in goals, we wish her a speedy recovery! A huge thank you to the Senior Ladies who supported the team and made sure we had 11 with subs, we really appreciate the efforts, we can’t do it without you girls. Thanks also to Claire for running the line.

Reserve Women Black V Albury City

Reserves V Wangaratta Won 4 – 1
The Ressies got their first win of the year with a top game on Sunday. Down 0-1 at half-time the team played a great second half to run over their opponents. Tuksar led the team well with Mick Corkett, David Dyason, Zac Francis and Chris Vidovic playing good games. Brendan was again solid in goals.

Ladies V Wangaratta Lost 4 – 5
It was a gallant effort by our senior senoritas today on the pitch. After a slower start to the game, there was a plethora of tessellation in the second half that amounted to a triumphant resurrection of the beautiful sport. Our hunger for possession resulted in Spursies becoming the antagonists of the battle. We played for each other, jostling with our opponents until the bitter end. Goals came thick and fast, with one to Millie from a gorgeous top corner lob, one to Imogen from a well positioned cross and two to Jess with exceptional placement. Final score 5-4. Special mentions to Kendal and Jamie for their determination on the ball and all the efforts shown by the ladies who provided support at the reserves games. Through the blood sweat and tears, our passion has not diminished. Melrose beware.

Seniors V Wangaratta Lost 0 – 9
The score line tells the story in a game where the Spurs struggled and our opponents had some very classy forwards. Best to move on to next week where the seniors will perform much better.

 Under 11s V Diamonds Lost 0 – 1

A very well-played game by both teams. I walked away very happy with our team’s performance and the players’ effort and determination. I feel we could have got a better result if we were using a different ball or if the ball had a little more air in it as most of our shots did not have their usual zip and power in them. The playing surface was flat but very sandy and damp like being at the beach and the kids found it difficult to play on. At least playing so early the chance of sunburn was minimal.
Ian and Reese received the Sodens award for R2 & R3, Ian has been exceptional in goals and Reese was outstanding at the back. Brodie picked up the Cold Rock award this week, Brodie did a huge amount of running in midfield and his distribution was excellent. All the other players played well and Jonathon was unlucky not to receive an award this week as he had a great game also.

Under 12s V Diamonds Draw 2 – 2

This was a great game for the spectators. Hotspurs led 1-0 to the last three minutes when our opponents scored two quick goals to take the lead. Then with the last kick of the game Harry Carmody scored with a penalty to take a draw. It was a fair result as both teams were very even on the day. Brodie Davies, Dawson Fuller and Ian Howsam from the elevens team helped out and all played terrific matches. Jack Bergin was excellent with great passes, Harry Carmody was always dangerous up front and Bailey Alexander was solid in the defence. A good performance from the Twelve Boys.

Under 12s Girls V Diamonds Lost 1 – 4

A solid game from the girls who will continue to improve each week they play together. Mattaya and Caitlyn didn’t stop running in the middle of the park on a very large field. Evy and Alyssa teamed up well front and scored a goal in the second half. Well Done Lil on another great week in goals!! Keep it up girls!!

The u13s enjoyed a 3-0 win against Wodonga Diamonds at La Trobe on Sunday. Harry Carmody from the u12s team scored a goal off a corner while in the 2nd half Josh scored 2 goals off great through-balls from Conner. The hotspurs side also enjoyed a great defensive game conceding no goals. Award winners, Harry Camordy, Toby Lewis, Conner Chant and Isobella Godfrey

These girls battle hard and with no bench they played out the game and did not give up, which is all I can ever ask for!! Over 35s V Diamonds Lost 0 – 2

We lost but were not disgraced in this game as we had the bare 11 against a team with 4 subs, consequently we were run off our feet. There were many good passages of play and our lapse early in the game was forgotten and we battled to get that one back. John Irvine saved us a number of times in goal and there were fewer of the mistakes we made last week. We needed to get forward later in the game but tiredness got the better of us. A couple of hard games coming up so let’s get fitter guys.

Reserve Women Gold V Diamonds Draw 0 – 0

A much better game from the Reserve Ladies who held their shape and passed the ball around well. Great games were had By KT and Mia in the middle of the park and our defence were definitely the stars of the day held together by Carissa, Taylah, Megan, Snowy and Kelly. Thanks to the Senior girls who provided support and fresh legs, we really appreciate it!!

This game finished early due to injury but the Ressies got their first point of the year with a really determined team effort. Rob Tuksar and Middi Pursehouse marshalled the defence well while Chris Vidovic, Brendan O’Neill and Mick Corkett were great in mid-field. Angus MacKinnon, Tim Prince and David Dyason also played well. Good job by all the team on Sunday.

Ladies V Diamonds Lost 2 – 6

It was a glorious sunny day that greeted the Belle’s of Albury Hotspurs for their round three match against Wodonga Diamonds, the key for all of our girls on such a day coincided with the word of the week, being sun burn. Many tubes of sunscreen drifted out of kit bags to keep the sun burn away.
In the start of the first half we were running our hearts out, and after running so hard we managed to get an amazing cross in by Amelia, and then a lovely finish from Annie who ran through to the back post with great determination. We held our ground for a while until they snuck a couple of goals through. We made an amazing attack after a while were Ali went zooming up the field and got past three of the diamonds girls and then made a powerful kick into the side of the net. We came off for the first half happy with how the result had turned out 4-2 and gave ourselves a great talk to keep us motivated.
We came out in the second half ready to fire into it. We pressured them for such a long time and we kept going at them after a while we could tell that the sun was getting to all the girls on the field but everyone kept going. We had amazing shots at the goals but unfortunately the goals kept moving out of the way! Diamonds made a lot of attacks but we stopped them almost every time. Diamonds got two more striking goals that no one could stop. We held our ground for the rest of the game and played amazing. We had finished the second half and we were ready to hit the showers.
All of the girls played amazingly as a team and we will become a lot better through our bonding throughout the year. I would like to congratulate all the girls for playing well but especially Weavers in goals who did amazing (again), Annie and Ali for their amazing goals and also Sammie for holding her position so well in the midfield.

Seniors V Diamonds Lost 1 – 2

A heartbreaking loss for the seniors with our opponents snatching a goal in the last minute. After a scoreless first half Jon Cochrane grabbed the lead for Spurs with a super goal from outside the penalty area. Unfortunately Hotspurs conceded twice in the last twenty minutes to go down by the odd goal. Despite the loss the team performed well.

Under 11s V Albury City Lost 1 – 3
We were out-numbered, out-gunned but not outplayed!

We were one player short just on game time then Hamyun arrived so we a had a full team to start. John arrived midway through the first half giving us a much needed sub as City had a full list with five subs.
Everyone worked extremely hard and should be proud of their efforts, as I am of theirs, and of their determination.
We welcomed U10 Jack to the squad and he rewarded us with our only goal and played a great game.
Ian was excellent in goals a deserves a special mention.
This was a good test as City has some very good players and are well coached. We know now that we have a lot of work to do at training so next time we meet it will be the Spurs taking all three points.

Under 12s V Albury City Lost 0 – 3
The 12s were up against a strong side this week. Despite having some good chances to score in the first half, we found ourselves down by three goals at half-time. We played much better after half-time with the defence playing very well and the forwards getting some shots on goals. Will Clarke was outstanding in the midfield and Will Haberfield and Kristian Shipard both played great games in the goals.

Under 12s Girls V Albury City Won 2 – 1
A great game from the under 12 girls for their first game of the season, with only nine girls they all did a great job especially as this was many of the girls’ first game!! Evy and Alyssa teamed up well up front and played well, with Ciara, Bella G and Eliza holding up the defence. Mattaya played well with Charlotte and Caitlyn in the midfield and Lil did an awesome job in goals. Well done girls, keep working!!

Under 13s V Albury City Lost 0 – 6

Under 14s V Albury City Lost 3 – 4

On a very warm Autumn day we farewelled the Macmillan family, thanked them for their six seasons at Hotspurs and wished them well as they explore new territories. We welcomed and thanked our new coach Joel and his assistants Eggy and Roy. With two players injured, (Harry and Riley), our team of 12, Felix, Bryce, Manny, Gez, Leo, Bagat, Conner, Scottie, Denzel, Josh, Will, and Jack, started positive, determined and trialling some new positions.
Well-placed team passing saw Felix assisted by Leo score the first goal; we held the lead till half-time! Our backline Will, Manny, Bryce, Josh and our keeper Scottie, worked very hard throughout the entire game. Scottie saved four amazing shots in the first half.
Our second half saw Albury City scoring two quick goals followed by two Hotspur goals from Leo, first one assisted by Gez, then Leo’s other goal from a corner. The players’ courage, heart and teamwork were again the recipe for a corker of a game which the scores do not always adequately reflect. After many attempts and close shots by both sides, Albury City scored in the last few minutes, and then skilfully slowed the game down to come away the winners four to three.
Our new coach Joel said “well done, hold your heads up, it was a tense game and we were unlucky, all deserve an award” ! Alas there’s only three available each week. This week’s awards go to Scottie, Bryce and Josh and we are very thankful to Blockbuster, Baker’s Delight and Wendy’s for making these awards possible.
Our team thanks Karl for his smiling contribution as linesman and our team manager Di who can still cover the ground in two blinks of an eye to attend an injured child. Di has a roster for sharing the weekly newsletter reports and orange duty. If you didn’t get one this week please sees Di at the next game, it’s great to be involved and it’s volunteer hearts that make it all possible for our children.
Please note even though next week at Diamonds Park, under 14s have a bye, it would be great if you came along to cheer your under-13 team-mates whom half make up our under 14s team. Go Hotspurs!!

A tough battle for the Under-14 girls who have mostly just come up from the Under-12 team against a very strong Albury City team but the girls played well and did not give up!! Sarsha and Bella played well in the middle of the park and after losing Aleasha, Riley was awesome in goals, the girls all passed the ball well and will continue to develop again we had several new girls who played their first game and did a great job. Keep working girls. A huge thankyou to the under-12 girls who backed it up and sat on the bench.

Over 35s V Albury City Won 6 – 3
A win in our first game is a great way to start the season. We were a bit rusty at times and spent a lot of time chasing the ball but we weathered the initial onslaught and like tigers showed our claws as the game progressed. Our set-up suited the game and we used the one sub we had for the first half well, giving some of the less fit a break. We were up 3-1 at half-time and continued our good play in the second half though as we got tired we allowed too many gaps. In the end a good win with braces to Eddie, Jim B and Jim C. Onward and upward fellas.

Reserve Women Gold V Albury City Lost 1 – 4
The score line does not reflect the game!! The girls, or as we like to say golden oldies, played extremely well together and in patches we passed the ball around well, unfortunately we could not hold Albury City’s speed and youth!! Great games were had by Mia (welcome back) and Jess A. Up front our defence was super strong and held up well with Megan, Snowy, Molly and Kel. Thanks Claire for helping out!! Also a great first game to Alex!! Keep working girls

Reserve Women Black V Wodonga Heart Won 1 – 0
After a draw in our first game the reserve ladies black team got their first win against Heart.

It was a tough game and well played by all, our defence was strong and frontline was fast with midfield holding at steady pace.
Our goal was scorer was Emily Weavers who received a pass from Shelby and ran with the ball down the line, ducking and weaving Heart players, running like a TIGER chasing its prey …then she strikes … and lands her prey one ball in the back of the net.
Thanks to all the girls for a memorable game and special thanks to the senior ladies who made up our numbers, without you we would have had to forfeit as Heart came to the table with 16 players.

Ladies V Albury City Lost 0 – 10
A disappointing result for the girls today. We started off strong holding off Albury City’s attack. We struggled in the second half with the temperature rising but we never gave up. First losing Anna to injury then Kaylah, we kept fighting. It was a tough match but we played well as a team. Special mention to our two keepers Emily & Beth doing a great job keeping the score down. Congratulations also go to Sammy for winning best on ground.

Seniors V Albury City Lost 0 – 4
After a great win last week the seniors were disappointing on Sunday. We conceded some easy goals which really set us back and when scoring chances were made we could not take them. Indra Poudel who worked very hard up front was our best player. The team will look forward to playing much better next week.

A warm welcome to any new players starting with the Spurs this year. 

Great start  to the year

Last Sunday we had a terrific start to the 2015 season. The weather was fantastic and the grounds were in excellent condition. All the Hotspurs junior teams were able to win their games and in an wonderful effort the Senior Men came from two goals down at half-time to defeat last year’s league champions by three goals to two. The canteen had a very busy day taking well over $2000 and thanks must go to the Under 16 parents who helped out with several regular canteen workers away.

Housekeeping reminders

• All registration monies should now be paid.
• A small number of players still have their shirts from last year. Please bring them back.
• Players are not to have earrings, watches or jewellery on and MUST have shin pads.  A water bottle is recommended.
• All players must be registered to play. You can check with the registrars.
• Contact your coach or manager if you are unavailable for any game please
• Each team has one rostered home day DUTY during the season.  This team must prepare the playing field ( put up nets etc.) 7.30am START and pull down nets and put away equipment at the end of the day, about 5pm FINISH and provide three people to assist in the canteen on that day.

Newsletters

We will be producing a newsletter every week throughout the season to provide you with all necessary information. We will be continuing our report competition where you win a drink from the canteen to be collected on home games for the best report / poem / song etc. using the word of the week. The word for first game is “tiger”.
We encourage all grades to submit match reports to go in the newsletter. Reports need to be sent each week to wrights@dragnet.com.au before 10pm on the Monday after the game so they can be collated. The report does not have to be done by the manager or coach so you can share the responsibility between the parents and/or players. You can see past reports on the Hotspurs website.

MiniRoos update

The Miniroos season will kick off on Saturday, April 18 with a gala day with the venue and games times to be confirmed.

Get-togethers and training sessions will be held from 5pm to 6pm on Wednesday, March 25 and April and during the school holidays on Wednesday April 8 and April 15.

Match reports

Under 11s V Twin City  Won  9 – 1

Well I’m not sure about the kids but I was a little excited and nervous as we played our first game on the big field for competition points after graduating from Miniroos.

After conceding the first goal early in the match we quickly turned it around with an equalising goal from Jay and soon after Brodie’s strike put us in front and we never looked back from there.

The team displayed good formation and passed the ball very well from defence through to the forwards. This was very pleasing for our first game of the year. Even though the team played well there is always room for improvement. Our two new boys Harrison and Hamayun played very well and looked like they have been playing with this team for many games. A special mention to Cody for his Ace Ventura goal celebration, very unique!

Even though the score was impressive for us, we could have conceded more goals if it wasn’t for some great goalkeeping by Ian with several great saves.

The entire team played very well and I couldn’t have asked for more from our first game.

Team and goals: Hamayun (1), Dawson (1), Bidish, Brodie (2), Rupert, Ian, Jonathon, Jay (2), Reese, John, Tomoki (2), Harrison, Cody (1). Ava was unavailable and we look forward to having her in the team when soon.

Under 12s V Twin City  Won  6 – 1

An impressive start to the year by the twelves. The teamwork was excellent with all players keeping in  their positions and combining well. Thanks to Ciara Dahl and Halle Baker from the girls team who played great games for the team and welcome to new player Noah who celebrated his first game with Hotspurs by scoring a goal. Well done to all team members.

A big welcome to our new players William, Jack and Leo, and to the girls who will be playing with us this season Bella, Yasmin and Sarsha. Great to see so many of our last year’s team back as well as Harry C stepping up from the 12s with Will and Toby.

It was a great start to this season with a 4/2 win over Twin City. The team played very well together with a lot of passing and attacking the ball. Our defence was its usual strong self, you would never know that we had 6 new to the team players out there today.

Don’t forget training changes from Tuesday nights to Wednesday nights 5-6.30 this week.

Awards this week from Bakers Delight, Cold Rock and Wendy’s went to Harry M, William C and Jack. Bella got the coaches award.

Well done to the boys a great win. After a not so good start to the game which found us 2-0 down changes were made and from behind we came. In a very exciting game with the boys never giving up we turned the score around to a 4/3 win. Felix scored 3 and our new recruit Denzel scored 1. We welcome Denzel to the team.

Well here we go again. Once more we are at the back end of the ‘overlap season’ when the cricket kit bag is joined on the bedroom floor by the football gear. Time to get used to the 8.30 time slot and what better way to start the season than with the 7.30 set up.

The team started off a little nervously (maybe it was the dewy grass that affected the ball skills) but soon started to put a few moves together. It was a pretty even tussle early on. A goal each way, some good saves in goal and then the Spurs pulled clear for half time. Second half was better as the confidence grew, passes and possession improved. Final score 5-2. We’ll done team. Let’s keep it going.

The seniors got a great start to the year by defeating last years champions. It was a particularly good win as the boys were behind 0-2 at half-time.

After great encouragement from new coach Javi Martinez and team had an outstanding second half scoring three goals.  Indra Poudel capped a great debut with a goal after good team play. Jon Cochrane  scored a special goal from a long way out and Matt Townsend deservedly got the winning goal. Indra Guragain, Ethan Rimmer and Joel McDonough were all terrific in their first senior games for Spurs.
