Presidents Report

What a season it has been!
At the start of the year we managed to again have a full complement of 13 teams in the competition.
At the end of the regular season we have 12 out of those teams in the finals!
This is a tremendous effort from the players, coaches, parents and committee and is the reason why we are poised to be crowned Club Champions for 2022.
We are all looking forward to the cup finals series starting this weekend at 3 locations around town. Spurs are hosting all the 2v7 games on Sunday and have a good compliment of teams playing at home.
Starting from 9:25am our Div 2 Ladies, then Div 1 ladies @ 11am and Div 2 men @ 12:50pm all earning the right to play in front of the home crowd.

Miniroos

Miniroos season has come to an end as we managed to squeeze in the last round despite the rain and ground conditions.
Again, record numbers this year, which has taken an excellent effort from the volunteers. Thanks again for the hard work and persistence, these young players have received an excellent platform for years to come and had heaps of fun along the way.
Please remember that all strips need to be returned to the club in readiness for next season, you can bring it down this arvo to Aloysius at 5pm or alternatively please bring them to the presentation day on the 17th September. They must be returned to receive your presentation day awards.

In a mud pit we did just enough to comfortably win. Thanks to Loz who again covered from the o’35s.
Great season lads, finishing off with a deserved home final this week.

Over 35s

Saturday soccer at a boggy Glen park where the lads warm up was interrupted by a torrential downpour which made for terrible playing conditions. Ball movement became difficult and many passes fell short or were over hit. Kinno was put through and his pace gave him the time he needed to calmly pass the ball into the bottom right corner giving Boomers keeper no chance. 1 nil at half time although the Boomers had two or three very good chances to equalise but were unable to beat Eddy. The second half saw us dominate as Boomers appeared to tire on the heavy going. A A Ron drilled a pass to Twinkle toes Irish who river danced his way through a packed penalty area and leaving their keeper Flatley amazed, guided the ball into the goals. Our third came from Scotty’s great cross and was slammed home by a Boomers defender, something we have been know to do in the past. Boomers did manage to find the back of the net but it was all too late as we ran out 3-1 winners.
The team can take confidence into the finals now having beaten all bar Twin City at least during the season.

Presidents Report

Some great results came from the weekend when most of the club were away against Albury City.
The regular season finishes this weekend, and we will have most teams in the finals series, a proud moment for the club.
This weekend also marks the final Miniroos round. I spoke about it earlier in the season that we have had record numbers of Miniroos, it has been great to have the kids back after the stop start years we had during the pandemic, and it will only get stronger in years to come. Thanks to all the hard working coaches and volunteers who have given the kids some great sessions and game guidance over the season. Its been very evident in their improvement and development over 2022.
We have teams playing across the afternoon and evening Saturday at Boomers and Sunday there are some catch up rounds at various venues.
Lets show Boomers how big our supporter base is on Saturday evening.

Div 2 men came up against a very ‘experienced’ and eager Albury City team that were hellbent on securing the league.
The game was cut short just as we were mounting a comeback after a slow start.

Presidents Report

Our home games are now complete for the year and we have two away rounds remaining before finals.
On Sunday our 14 girls team got across the line against Myrtleford and become the 3rd Spurs team this year to win their respective league titles.
This is again a fine achievement, congratulations girls, coach Fiona Smith and manager Craig Compton on another fine season. There are still a couple of live chances and we wish those teams all the best in the final rounds.
This has put us in very good shape the Club Championship which we haven’t managed to get hold of for around 20 years. Well done Spurs.
See you all away at Jelbart park on Sunday against Albury City.

Div.1 Men

We welcomed 4th placed Myrtleford to Aloysius on Sunday. After many of the senior group reviewed the footage of last week’s loss, there was an air of optimism that we could do something about our performance for the resilient Hotspurs faithful for our last home game of the season. Dawson Fuller made way for Brian Venaga and the number 37 had a fine starting debut for season 22, he even lasted the whole game! Brian’s experience and leadership certainly helped the team and we played a brand of football that we had been searching for all year. We took the lead after 35 minutes when Kristian continued his scoring run from Brian’s deft cross, Schreib’s scored a fantastic 2nd when he took on their defensive unit and slotted calmly into the bottom corner from 22 yards out and we went into the break 2-0 up. The coaches words were simple at half time, listen, be patient and get the three points. We continued to run the game in the second half and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Shreib’s picked out Zac Fordham at the top of the box who’s exceptional strike beat the keeper and we were out to 3-0. Their keeper made a number of fine saves to deny us extending our lead and Bonners was called into action for a fine reaction save from a deflected clearance but unfortaunley the ball ended up in the back of the net. Both keepers continued to make saves and the game ended with one of our best wins of the season. Every player contributed to this result but we would like to acknowledge the efforts of Adib Golshan and Dawson Fuller over the last five matches and their efforts in helping the seniors out. We take on take on 6th place Albury City this weekend.

Div.2 Men v Myrtleford Won 2-1

Again we went into this round undermanned and were supported by the old guard from the O’35s. This time Mickett and Kinno got the call up supported by Larry who popped on late in the piece for a more of an impact role. As per usual we started a little slow but controlled the play well in the midfield. Dawso was a welcome return to the side as we get him ready for some finals action in a few weeks. Mitch Cameron is starting to get form back and slotted a goal through the legs of 3 or 4 sets of defenders and an offside Castles.
Jonno Cochrane put in a man of the match performance and slotted the second from a set piece. We shipped one late but we were in control of the match. Results need to go our way but we are still a live chance of the league starting with a victory in against City this Sunday.

16 Boys v Myrtleford Won 6-1

After the first 10 mins of testosterone fuelled bickering, the lads shipped a weird goal that I’m sure they have analysed on the VEO replay. It was good to see them turn themselves around and through 2 classy finishes from Pat Mason. Frankie came off early after doing too much at his athletics carnival on Friday but with 5 on the bench we were able to fill the void with Alonso who came back after a skills camp and holiday in Spain for 3 weeks.
Harry Hoodcamp is becoming a force up front once he sweeps onto his left and scored a ripper, and Xavier came on to good effect with some creative midfield work. Lucas was gifted a tap in on the line from a corner and another goal came from similar but no ones knows who kicked it. The final goal was a worldie coming from the left peg of Cooper Howard after trapping the ball in the middle, driving forward and hitting top bins.
Keep working hard team and anything can happen in the finals.

Sunday 14 Girls took Myrtleford on again and did not disappoint with a 2-1
Win. The 2 great goals were from Elissa and Eve, I would also like to mention Emma’s fantastic work in goals and after taking a boot to the head kept going till the end, you’re a champion Emma.
This sealed the Girls winning the League Championship.
Congratulations Girls and Coach Fi on a great Season so far well deserved. Now Let’s Win until the End

Presidents Report

On Sunday we had our second last home round of the year against our foundation partners Melrose. Our Ladies played some awesome football in front of the home crowd and got the full points to cement their spot as second on the ladder leading into finals. The two Mens divisions had some disappointing results against a couple of teams that showed some enviable fight and resilience.
This weekend marks the end of our home games and will be a relief to our brilliant volunteers who have worked tirelessly in the canteen this being the 11th time this season. Thanks for all your efforts Olivia, Phil, Kate, Tony and all those others that have popped in to help or done an extra shift on the BBQ. The canteen is a major fundraising arm of the club that helps us maintain things like new goals, balls and equipment to keep our club functioning. Thanks again all those volunteers.

Crowd behaviour

Last night we held our monthly AWFA meeting with other clubs. Discussed heavily was the behaviour of crowds at games across the association. There has been an increase in poor behaviour at games across the board, foul language aimed at referees, opponents and other crowd members has been noted in numerous incident reports across AWFA.
I can thankfully report that our crowds have been well behaved and so far without incident. This is the benchmark of culture that we should aim to maintain.
With finals just around the corner, emotions will be heightened, maintain this great level of support for your club and team.
And remember, without referees, coaches and other volunteers we have no game at all.

Major Fundraiser – Cadbury Chocolate drive

We are coming to the end of our Cadbury Chocolate fundraiser. Thanks so much to those that have sold their boxes and returned their $60. Thanks also to those that took an extra box or two.
Reminder that this money can now be given to your coach, or any other committee member you find at the grounds or or at the canteen on Sunday.
We still have 30 boxes left that are waiting to be sold, if you haven’t received one to sell , or would like to help us out by selling another that’d be greatly appreciated.
Prizes for those that sold the most will be announced at the junior presentation day.

Hotspurs Heroes

From Spurs to the W-League

Kat Smith who started playing football as a junior  with Albury Hotspurs in the 1990’s was this week appointed as head coach of the Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team.
Kat was an exceptional player and played in the Hotspurs senior womens team which won the AWFA League title in 2000. After finishing school Kat moved to Melbourne and soon became interested in coaching. She has a great CV coaching at Melbourne Victory and the Junior Matildas. It is a proud moment to have a Spurs junior achieve what Kat has.
She is thankful for the start that Hotspurs gave her. Congratulations Kat.

From Spurs to the Commonwealth Games

Jocelyn Bartram played with Spurs as junior and senior player for ten years.
Jocelyn was a very talented soccer player but she was also an exceptional hockey player. Jocelyn is now the No.1 goalkeeper for the Hockeyroos and will play in the Commonwealth Games. Good Luck Jocelyn.

Div.1 Men

The sun was shining and the conditions for football were almost perfect as we welcomed Melrose to Spurs Stadium for our must win encounter on Sunday. We had Nick out of the team this week and welcomed Zac Fordham back in. Melrose to their credit had a number of players who had played Reserve grade and were doubling up in the higher division to field a team. We controlled large passages of the first half and were rewarded when Kristian powered home a fantastic cross from Zac Fordham. Unfortunately we made two defensive errors and found ourselves heading into the break 2-1 down. Unfortunately we conceded a penalty and had a player sent off and we slipped behind to 3-2 down, while we tried we just couldn’t find the back of the net again. This has now taken our finals campaign out of our hands and it is up to others. We play 4th placed Myrtleford this week at home.

Div.2 Men v Melrose Lost 0-2

Missing a couple and losing Townie in the warmup made our job a lot tougher today. Again shipping an early goal and then a penalty in the first half, we remained positive at the break but could not convert our chances in attack. Losing this game means that our League hopes may have faded but it also means we have a grounding to launch a finals campaign that we can be proud of.
Simple recipe for success. EVERYONE must work hard at training.

17 Girls v Myrtleford Won 4-0

Another dominant effort from our girls. Having no one on the bench this week meant all of the girls had to put their best efforts in. Hayley and Rylee assisted in goals and performed well. The first goal was scored by Rylee after excellent midfield defensive work from Maddie. Summer was in goals for Myrtleford and she saved a number of excellent shots by Charlotte and Seanna. Rylee’s second goal came from a great intercept and pass from Bi to Keely. Keely showed great composure on the ball, looked up and placed a well weighted ball for Rylee to score. We went to the break 2-0 up but the every dangerous Summer was to play on the field in the second half. Keely was charged with making sure Summer had no space in midfield and Maddie worked together with Keely to nullify Summer’s impact. Keely and Charlotte combined in the penalty box with a quick one-two to allow Keely space to slot home Spurs third goal. In the dying minutes of the game a beautifully kicked corner by Charlotte bounced onto the chest of Maddie who controlled the ball well to score our forth and final goal of the game. Well done to all 11 players. Also thank you to players and parents who assisted with duty team responsibilities. This games shout out is to Taylor Furze who ran all day and defended wonderfully the whole game. Scorers: Rylee 2, Keely 1 and Maddie 1

16 Boys v Melrose Lost 0-2

This was possibly the most lacklustre game of the season. Missing a couple of important players should not equate to players showing no effort.
We did create a few decent efforts on goal that were not converted and won a couple of on field battles with Bailey pulling off some fine saves and Cooper winning the midfield battle.
Time to reset and rejuvenate for a positive finals tilt.

1 vs 2 WOW what a game.
Coach Fi had the girls primed and ready for this game.
Spur girls started slow, but once they got into it the girls started to fire.
A beautiful passage of play saw Pania score a beautiful goal. Mj was next goal scorer after some magic work from Captain Rylee.
Our strong back line kept Myrtleford with no score in the first half

Second half the girls come out firing, a great corner from Mj saw Eve netting a superb goal (finally) lol..
Myrtleford hit back with 1 with 10mins to go, but credit to our girls their fight and determination got another goal through Stam.
Winning 4-1 Cracking game. Well done Coach Fi and also to all the amazing girls you all played well and did an amazing job.
1 win away and the championship is ours.

Sunday was our last game with interim coach Aidan at the reins while Kinno has been enjoying some UK sun.
We got off to an early lead with MJ scoring a cracking goal within the first 30 seconds.
Again the team implemented the new structure and were able to get on top of Melrose early applying pressure throughout the ground.
Another great goal from Dom had us looking in control early at 2-0.
Will was working the wing well and crossing the ball into some great positions- we were really making their goal keeper work and he was up to the challenge.
Melrose pegged back a goal before half time but we quickly replied with a goal from Victor having us going into the half 3-1.
A few positional changes were made at half time giving Ryder Reid the freedom to run up and down the wing getting a lot of possessions.
We had a lot of corners in the second half with MJ setting up some great balls into the dangerous area but their keeper again was up to the challenge. Taj started throwing his head at the corners and we finally got one to the hit the back of the net- a few players may try and claim this goal but it unfortunately came off the thigh of a Melrose player.
Thierry’s pressure up front was relentless and after many attempts at goal he was rewarded with a much deserved goal following a great cross from Ryder.
We finished off the game with a 5-1 win, giving Aidan an unbeaten run at the helm.
Next week we welcome Kinno and Elijah back.
A big thanks from the team for all Aidan’s hard work over the past 5 weeks. The team seem to be really enjoying the new structure and you have put us in great stead leading into the finals.

Presidents Report

Sunday was a great day at home, our three of our Senior mens divisions and our Senior ladies division took all the points on offer.
There were 2 teams however, that didn’t play, but had some excellent results go their way. Our U/12 girls and our U/17 girls teams can confirm that they have won their league titles. Our 14 girls are not far off also.
This is such a brilliant result with 5 rounds remaining. It also echoes our commitment to our female teams which have held a mortgage on junior divisions for many years now. Congratulations to the players, coaches and managers and parents for their commitment to their teams. With the Womens World Cup being based in Australia next year, this is a great platform for our sport at club level, and is something that we have always worked hard at.
This Sunday we take on Melrose at our second last home round. They are always fierce opposition and the key will be our great supporter base.

Hotspurs Heroes

From Spurs to the W-League

Kat Smith who started playing football as a junior  with Albury Hotspurs in the 1990’s was this week appointed as head coach of the Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team.
Kat was an exceptional player and played in the Hotspurs senior womens team which won the AWFA League title in 2000. After finishing school Kat moved to Melbourne and soon became interested in coaching. She has a great CV coaching at Melbourne Victory and the Junior Matildas. It is a proud moment to have a Spurs junior achieve what Kat has.
She is thankful for the start that Hotspurs gave her. Congratulations Kat.

From Spurs to the Commonwealth Games

Jocelyn Bartram played with Spurs as junior and senior player for ten years.
Jocelyn was a very talented soccer player but she was also an exceptional hockey player. Jocelyn is now the No.1 goalkeeper for the Hockeyroos and will play in the Commonwealth Games. Good Luck Jocelyn.

Div.1 Men

We welcomed St Pats to Spurs Stadium for a must win encounter to keep our finals aspirations alive. We were soon ahead after 5 minutes when Dawson headed home his first senior goal and he was swamped by the team in celebration. Manny who was in and up front then doubled our lead and Schreib’s scored on the stroke of halftime. We had a chat at half time about keeping on the job at hand and continuing to run the game. We managed to score another two goals(Screib’s and Nick) in the second half and should have scored a few more but that was not to be the case. The defence did a fantastic job at keeping a clean sheet for only the second time this year. This win leaves us in 9th and we take on 8th place Melrose next weekend in a pivotal game for our season.

Div.2 Men v St Pats Won 6-1

The recipe for the rest of the season is to win, and win big. We completely dominated our opposition today, after again donating our best players to the seniors with Manny getting the callup this week.
Many opportunities were made but a lack of conversion cost us a 15 goal victory. Leo Castles missed a few sitters but then broke the shackles with an absolute worldie, finishing the day with a hattrick. It was Leos brother Jack that created many opportunities with some brilliant attacking bursts but just had one of those days where the shots were into the keeper or around or over the goal, he eventually took on 3 players including the keeper to slot home a fine goal. We are confident he will bang in goals this weekend against Melrose. Jimmy Kashindi and the stalwart Jon Coch also smashed one in each.
Well done to our young contingent of Kohan, Frankie, Furzey and Solly who very patiently took their chances and are growing into senior football each week. This Sunday is again an important one to win, again, with a margin.

Over 35s TOTAL DOMINATION by SPURS

The first half was only a reasonable effort by us as St Pats looked very comfortable at the back only having to deal with a few of our attacks. We were uncommitted and lacked drive.
The Batsinho was holding his own in goals until inevitably breached by the St Pats strikers who were receiving quality ball from un-pressured midfielders.
This broke Batsinho’s heart and he was so devastated he could not continue in second half.
Caretaker Coach/time keeper/sub maker Kewin, delivered what turned about to be one of the most uplifting and inspirational halftime talks the sporting world could ever had witnessed.
The team came out with a new enthusiasm and drive to take it to the opposition with courage and willingness to push and support each other going forward which was causing all matter of chaos for their defence.
Whitedog who lost his leg in the first half and exited the field like he was auditioning for “The School of Funny Walks”, somehow recovered by reattaching his leg at the knee with a bandage. He’s drive down the right side into the box was ended when he was brutally taken down, resulting in a Penelope which Captain Mickett calmly dispatched.
Coach Kewin had more magic to delivery from the sideline with some precision substitutions. He subbed THE MANTIS on for an attacking corner for instant success as he face falconed the ball firmly into to the opponent’s goal.
The scoring blitz and domination didn’t end there. Spurs very own A A Ron was in everything as usual. His work rate, athleticism and quirky ways of dealing with everyday football situations always managers to surprise. Chasing back with gusto he managed to intercept a St Pats cross and without hesitation clinically smashed it into the back of the net leaving our keeper Eddy absolutely no chance of stopping it!
Then there was a St Pats speculator bomb from 30 metres which become stuff of legend. Stumbling back Eddy managed to palm it onto the post and crossbar where it bounced back on to his should then out to a waiting St Pats player where Eddy then made a fantastic 1 on 1 save from point blank. The ball deflected and almost went out for a corner but was retrieved by St Pats to unleash a thunderous strike from a tight angle. The Cobra worked to position himself perfectly on the front post and with a flick of his tail, a hiss of his tongue and in full Cobra threat mode he guided the ball into the back of the net!
We scored all four goals of the second half to their two goals in the first. Total domination in the second half saw us comfortably ran away with a resounding 2-4 loss.
