Presidents Report

Some great results over the weekend from the Juniors up, and heaps of support considering a there were many games postponed and quite a few players away at representative tournaments. It was touch and go how the grounds and weather would be with an incredible amount of rain during the week making training impossible. This may have been a real blessing for our grounds for the rest of the season, they are looking great.
Thanks again to our volunteers who worked tirelessly in the canteen, and also those coaches and managers thanklessly dedicating your weekends to all the things that make game day work.
A real highlight for me over Sunday was seeing our life member Kelvin Davies getting to play with son Brodie in the 3rds. It looks a real strong 3rds team and I hope this can perhaps happen a few times throughout the season or maybe a father and son combo playing in finals.
The Ladies FA Cup game was postponed last week but will be played at 6pm at Melrose this Wednesday night. This is a real opportunity for the Spurs family to get our young squad across the line.
Our next club round is in Cobram on April 11, and is at their new venue it looks to be a great days football.

Div.2 Men v United Won 4-1

Sunday had us playing one of our fiercest rivals in Albury United at home. We all knew how hard a game this was going to be and we welcomed Jon Cochrane and Manny Balassopoulos in for their first game of the year and debuted Francesco in goals. We came into the half time with a handy 2-0(Zac Fordham 32 minute, Will Karantanis 40th and his first goal for Spurs) lead but also acknowledged that this score line can be perilous as well. We continued our impressive start but conceded in the 54th minute but this seemed to lift the entire team and we scored in the 62nd minute through David Mporashima and then Zac got his brace in the 70th. It is pleasing to see the team ready to play and playing great football and as what we say, it doesn’t matter who scores them, just score them! Well done to JC and then Manny for their efforts with the rest of the defence and to the midfielders for the way they controlled the game. We are currently second on the ladder by goal difference.

Div.3 Men v United Won 5-0

The Div.3 Men kicked-off their season with a comfortable victory over Albury United. It was the first time a lot of these players had played together with a mix of Senior Men, 17 boys and Over 35s players. Leo Castles bagged a hattrick and Maja and Solomon also got on the score sheet. It was great to see Ben Porta back playing with Spurs and he and Manny dominated at the back giving United very little to threaten our goals while Eddy maintained a clean sheet in goals.

A special moment was also had on the day with father and son combination Kelvin and Brodie Davies playing together for the first time in a competitive fixture.

17 Girls v United Won  7-0

Another very strong performance from all of the girls this week. A tougher opponent with number of talented players but the opposition were unable to mount a serious threat until late in the game thanks to the maintenance of possession and solid defence. Of note was the effort of Lily to shut down attacking runs from the middle of the park. Thanks again to all of the girls who had played a number of games and still put in a sterling effort late in the day. Well done also to Elise and Maddie who made strong runs in behind the defence to pressure the opposition resulting in scoring opportunities for Ava and Lily. Final score was 7-2 with the following scorers: Ava Tuksar x4, Lily Godfrey x2, Maddie McCormack x1. The team will now go into a game hiatus with two consecutive Byes and the next game being 2 May.

15 Boys v United Lost  0-5

With many players away this week its was always going to be a battle with our young squad.
Cooper and Will were outsized by their man-child opponents in the middle. No doubt our players will learn from this and we are hoping to get a few players back for the next round to strengthen the squad. Well done to Murray Diver who played his heart out and will grow some confidence from the game.

14 Girls v United Won 12-0

After a real shemozzle of a start waiting for an official to arrive, it was a real treat to have the wonder coach of the millennium Justin Wild help us out with the whistle.
The wait was also a blessing however with Alice, Elisha and Eloise all coming from their Ladies game at Boomers.
This game was in stark contrast to their practice game against Diamonds last week, once we are playing for points the team seems to flick a switch and up the ante. Well done to new Spurs Shayla and Lyla who are learning to play their midfield positions and improving by the minute.
Also great game to Eve who scored twice with real gutsy second efforts.
As ever, Bianca was cool and calm in defence and thanks heaps to Taylor and Seanna for putting their hands up to keep in Emmas absence.

12 Boys v United Won 3-2

The U12 boys had the opportunity to play on the main ground on Sunday against Albury United. Hotspurs went one up with a goal from James, before United equalised. United scored a second, and were in front with 20 minutes to go, the Spurs fought back and won the game 3-2 with goals from Taran and Tayton. Special mention to Johnny who had a blinder and also to Noah, Hector and to our Keeper Harry. A fantastic team performance.

12 Girls v Myrtleford Postponed

The under 12 girls game against Myrtleford was postponed due to many of the girls being away with AWFA representative teams.
Congratulations to Stam, Lily F, Lily N, Indy, Emma and Muireann for winning the under 12 shield. Also a big well done to Ivy, Isla, Mia, Molly, Lily N, Izzy, Emma and Muireann who narrowly missed out on winning the under 11 cup going unbeaten until the final.
Well done on doing yourselves and your club proud.

Presidents Report

It was a great to be back at home for the first time since 2019. Special thanks to Phil, Olivia, Dwayne and Kelvin (and others) for getting the Spurs Canteen, grounds and kits up and running for the season, these things just don’t happen by coincidence, thanks for the hard work.
On Sunday most teams played Wodonga Heart and some great matches were on display.
Considering we had a lot of club referees and the weather wasn’t great, each game was played in the good spirit and with great sportsmanship.
This week we host our arch rivals in Albury United and we will have some big crowds, lets show our support for Hotspurs in all grades.
Its great to see our Major sponsor Bradys Hotel back on board in 2021. We will have a running booking for the beer garden pavilion for all the Sundays we are in town.
Please get back and have a meal and meet up with fellow members on a Sunday afternoon/evening, the camaraderie, friendships and banter is what drives the ideas of our great community club.

Div.2 Men v Heart Won 4-0

We always know that a team like this is going to battle hard in defence and be tough to break down to open up scoring, this was the case but we also seemed to be defending their line as well at some stages! We have continued on from last week’s attacking play but we just need to work on our finishing a little more, although we must acknowledge the great job that their keeper did. We also welcomed Will Karantanis in for his first game for Hotspurs and he certainly played well! This week will have us play much tougher opposition and we are looking forward to it! We are currently sitting in 2nd position on the ladder.

Women Div.2 v Heart Lost 1-5

The scoreline didn’t reflect the closeness of this game with scores locked at 1 all at half time. Spurs created some good chances but didn’t put them away, while Heart were ruthless in front of goal putting away all their chances. Really nice games by Steph up front and Gabbie in the middle. Ciara and Nat were solid in defence as usual. Jess landed Spurs’ goal and really led the team around the park. Good work Ladies.

Over 35s v Heart  Won  4-0

Spurs fans returned to Aloysius for the first time in 18 months and – albeit only 500 of them – were able to show their appreciation for a team that had been not been crowned champions during that period.
They chanted “bring on the champions” minutes before kick-off and raised their scarves for a quieter-than-usual chorus of ‘Walk on Water’.
The beaming smile on Aiden Kilroy’s (assistant manager) face as he watched supporters take their seats during the warm-up was still in place hours later after his side produced an authoritative performance that kept them in touch with the more fancied sides.
Left-back Doug Alexander-Arnold was a menace throughout for Heart defenders and he looked the most likely to engineer an opening in the first few minutes.
Sure enough, it was his fizzed cross that The Master Tuska headed just over as the dominant home side pressed for a breakthrough.
However it was Kinning’s searching ball that Coatsy chested to himself to take one touch before firing past the visiting keeper.
The goal was celebrated with predictable elation by those able to snare a ticket for the game and they were entertained regularly during the first half, with Corketts nutmeg on himself and Wilds ‘Cruyff turn’ two of the highlights. Kinning then completed a solo run which was aided by a brilliant dummy run by Wild, which Kinning calmly slotted.
Spurs were even more dominant after the break and secured victory when Whitedog’s wonderful strike provided a 3-goal cushion but the biggest roar came when perhaps the greatest striker of our generation timed his run to perfection to find himself with no one to beat except himself, and himself won, thus failing to ripple the net in front of the fans.
Brad Robertson finished off the game with the fourth after collecting a rebound off a cross bar rattler from Kinning.
Those supporters who were denied a victory parade when Spurs should have lifted the long-awaited League trophy in the much anticipated 2020 season were treated to a performance worthy of champions against a Heart side who have proved an awkward opponent in recent encounters.
They thanked Irvine’s men for a fine performance with another rendition of ‘Walk on Water’ in the final seconds of stoppage time before cheering the manager’s familiar fist pumps at full time.
Well that’s how I remember it anyway.

17 Boys had a BYE

A great first run for the team coming away with a 16-0 victory. It was really pleasing to see the team play such a quality passing and running game so early in the season. Tomo chipped in with a cool 5 goals, Patrick bagged 4, Brodie got a brace, while Dawson, Jack, Solomon, Frank and Jay all picked up 1 each. Throughout the game the team was moved to a variety of positions and everyone did a top job in each role. A real positive start to the season and exciting times ahead.

17 Girls v Heart  Won  20-0

On a wet Sunday afternoon the crowd of Hotspurs fans waited for the feature event of the day, the U17 Girls against Wodonga Heart. The game was a crowd pleasing goal scoring bonanza.

This was the first game of the season for the team and it started with a hat-trick for goals for Ava Tuksar in the first 10 minutes (the first of three hat-tricks for the day). Ava Tuksar, Daisy Tuksar and Lily Godfrey were an impenetrable force in the middle of the park resulting in very few opposition incursions into our defensive half. Elise Knobel, Hayley Coulter and Elisha Wild made great runs wide, while Eloise Allwood and Alice McIntosh made a number of excellent overlapping runs penetrating deep into the oppositions half.

The first half of the game became a nightmare of the opposition goalkeeper who was called upon too often to make excellent saves but the shots were relenting. In comparison, Georgia Huckel spent the first 25 minutes without touching the ball as not a single shot was made on goal for the entire game. The biggest cheer of the game was saved for Elisha Wild who after replicating her father’s efforts in front of goal during the Over 35s match, showed great composure in front of goals scoring a brace for the game. As the avalanche of goals continued, our captain (Daisy Tuksar) made a number of on field changes with Lily and Ava moving into the backline and Keely Halloway and Alex Ventress called upon to control the middle. The changes did little to stem the flow and by half time the score was 12-0.

The second half started as the first had finished and it was a credit to all of the Hotspurs players as they maintained effort to keep their structure and be great at the basics. This game was a very one-sided affair which the girls knew was not going to be the case in future contests. With 15 minutes to go our very capable bench of U14 Girls players were called upon and Alex switched with Georgia who was keen for an opportunity to become more involved in the game. Lyla McNamara, Taylor Furze, Seanna Nichols and Shanaya Quinn were valuable additions to the side showing the depth of talent the Hotspurs has in their junior girls teams. The final score was 20-0.

We started the game well with Patrick Mason showing great speed to put us 2 -0 up early. Wodonga Heart are a very fast and well drilled team and Sam, Keely, John and Alex V all did well to stop their attacking flow. It was all too much in the end, even though we had the 3-2 lead with 10 minutes to go, Hearts class prevailed and we ran out of legs with Will and Cooper already playing full games just prior. If we work harder and maintain match intensity during our training sessions I have no doubt we can improve out of site from that performance. A big thanks to Daisy who dropped back to lend a hand.
Well done to Patrick Mason who grabbed a hattrick after bagging 4 goals in the U17s in the morning.

13 Boys v Heart Lost 1-3

As our manager Nathan said to the team before kick-off, it’s a winter sport enjoy it! We all knew that this was going to be a tough game and tough it was, but the team showed guts and determination for the entire match. We need to mention what a good job both of our keepers did in trying conditions, with big contributions from our defenders and central midfielders in trying to cut down their attacks. Once again we also have to thank our younger brigade for helping us out with numbers and also the parents for sitting in the rain. Please keep an eye on Hotspurs facebook page and your emails to see if training is still on and also an update on this week’s game (currently in the process of being postponed). Our current position on the ladder is 7th.

12 Boys v Heart Lost 0-6

In the first home game of the year we faced a very good Wodonga Heart team, after conceding an early goal we just couldn’t get ourselves going, eventually going down 6 nil. Dom, Ben and Harry defended valiantly and the midfield worked tirelessly for the whole game, it was pleasing to see that no one gave up, good luck to our rep players next week and also to Taj on a speedy recovery on his wrist injury.

Presidents Report

How good was it to be back on the park!
Starting Saturday night we watched a tremendous display of female football that saw our young Spurs ladies very unlucky to go down 5-4 to a very experienced St Pats outfit. We had a real show of support on the sides with many Spurs members coming out in droves despite the gale forced winds and dust storms.
On Sunday we also had many supporters turn out to Alexandra Park in what felt like déjà vu from 2020 with our only round of the season. I think this year however feels much more positive and fingers crossed we can maintain the health of the community and also play football for the entire 2021 season.
I’d really like to thanks all the committee, coaches and managers for the time they have put in over the last 12 months. It’s the very reason that Spurs can field a side in every age group and also have the on-field successes we witnessed on the weekend.
These things do not happen by coincidence! Keep up the hard work.
This week we will be hosts for the first time since 2019. The BBQ will be cooking breakfast and lunch and with the absence of a Heart Senior Mens team our last game of the day will be our 17girls on the Main pitch. After that game we will be having a special Casserole dinner so watch out for the advertisement.

Spectators Code of Conduct

It’s always good to remind ourselves of how we should act whilst spectating.
The number 1 rule in the FFA Spectator Code of Behaviour instructs us the ‘Respect the decisions of Match Officials and teach our children to do the same’.
I know Albury Hotspurs have a tremendously passionate supporter base, this is why I believe we can be the drivers of a cultural change that sees us never cross the line between good supportive banter and abusive language towards officials, players, coaches and managers. I have attached a couple of documents that outline the FFAs Code of Conduct and this is our policy also.
Without match officials we do not have a game, please respect them at all times and lets make sure Hotspurs are setting the best example.

We welcomed some new players to the club with this game in David Mporashima (chipped in with 2 goals as well), Mercy Nduwayezu and Maja Mbelechi and Francesco Zaccheo, welcome again. The team played very well for large parts of the game and created many chances with credit to Jeremy for delivering a hat trick! Our possession and field positioning was great for the first game and the defence was well managed by Joel. We look forward to where we will push ourselves to this year!

Women Div.2 v St Pats Drew 0-0

To say or Ladies squad has come a long way is a massive understatement.
This game 12 months ago saw us lose by 10 goals, so to secure a point here is an exceptional achievement.
This game was a real battle of attrition. Spurs dominated many parts of play but couldn’t quite hit the back of the net. Keepers at both ends were making it difficult to score. After a big night in goals Saturday, Christie found herself as a striker in Div 2 on the Sunday and nearly got herself a goal before being moved into goals in the second half and pulling off a brilliant save in the dying minutes to secure a point.
New player Nicki showed a lot of poise in her first ever game and Ingrid was a real live wire up front, Im sure there will be plenty of goals coming her way in the future.
Nat and Tash were like a brick wall at centre half, shutting down all of St Pats thrusts forward. Well done also to our young brigade in Rylee and Eloise who backed up from the Div 1 Ladies the night before, they were stellar in the middle of the park.

No excuses as we went into the match with more than enough quality and with a full list of subs on the bench. Passing and first touch were not nearly good enough. Kinno scored our only goal as was one of the better performers along with Harrow.

It was great to see everyone up and about on a lovely Sunday morning at Alexandra Park. With this really only the second time that we have played on the big pitch as a team, the team managed to cover the field very well and pass the ball around to create plenty of chances. We were very appreciative of the help from the lower age groups and we hoped you enjoyed the experience. Well done to Muireann with 2 goals and Taj and Jake with one apiece. We would also like to welcome Monte to the club and thank Nathan for coming on board as Manager. Next week is a big challenge and I am sure we are going to be up for it, go Spurs!

The U12 boys played there first match of the season against a good St pats side, and after falling behind fought back to win the match 2-1. The first half was a definite eye opener for some of the players after not playing for over 12 months, they adjusted in the second half to come away with the victory. Special mention to Billy for scoring both goals and Sam’s second half defence. A very good team effort!

12 Girls v Wodonga Diamonds Won 4-0

Our under 12 girls made a trip across to La Trobe to play their first game of the year. We welcomed 6 new girls to the Spurs family Ruby, Sophie, Lily, Indy, Molly and Stella.
The focus for the day for the girls was to keep their formation/structure and to trust what they had done on the training field. Control the ball, take a touch lift your head and Pass.
For 8 of the side, it was their first outing on a full pitch. The girls all quickly adapted to their new surroundings. It did not take long for us to create some chances with Izzy, Mia, Harper and Stam going close. Our shape was fantastic, Indy marshalled the back 3 and their positioning was excellent throughout with Stella and Ivy solid in defence. We were firmly in control of the game and constantly pushing for the breakthrough goal. That goal came from Muireann with a beautifully struck shot beating the Diamonds keeper Lily Nicholls providing the assist.
We went in at the break 1-0 up, at half time we again focused on the structure and told the girls out wide that the ball will get out to them and when it did to attack the space. We also asked the girls to back themselves in and to shoot when ever a chance arose. We asked them to push on and to try and put the game to bed early.
The girls took the advice on and quickly added to our lead with Muireann getting a quick-fire brace to complete her “hattrick” with one of the goals described in her own words as “top bins”. At 3-0 up we decided to give Emma our GK a run in the field and Muireann playing her second game for the day a break, so they swapped positions. This change led to the team increasing their effort and lots of girls standing up. Lily Stam and Lexi dominated the midfield battle and used Pallas out wide as an outlet on multiple occasions. Before the game, the coaches asked Molly to step up to a level that we know she could get to and to take the game on. Molly worked hard throughout the game and got just reward with a classy goal to make it 4-0 and that is how the game finished.
We had so many positives to take from the game and so much to build on. The highlight of the day was the girls getting together at the end and singing the song proudly.
It is great to be back!
