Congratulations to three of Fiona Smith’s U12 girls who made the AWFA Rep U12 Girls and went to Griffith on the weekend. Out of the six games they played they won five and drew one taking out the Riverina branch title, and bringing home a gold medal. The girls are Sarsha Smith, Halle Baker and Isabella Godfrey. Le-Anne Smith said not only should the girls be congratulated but it was also a testament to the coaching skills of Fi Smith.

All game reports to go in the newsletter need to be sent each week to wrights@dragnet.com.au before 10pm on the Monday after the game so they can be collated. The newsletter is emailed out each week. The report does not have to be done by the manager or coach so you can share the responsibility between the parents and/or players. If you miss the deadline I’ll carry the article into the following week but please try to meet the deadline. You can see past reports on the Hotspurs website.

A big thank you to the under 11’s for playing with us, without you we would really struggle fielding a team. Thanks also to the parents who volunteer each week to run lines, write reports and bring oranges. It does all help the day run smoothly.
Goals: Kye 1
Awards: Sami, Will P, Scott and Riley
A good effort by all the girls. Unfortunately the result did not go our way on a cold day. Laura played a great game in defence and was supported well by Ciara and Riley(who played her first game for spurs) Ava scored a great goal early and was unlucky not to put a few more away. Good Keeping from Aleasha all game. Keep up the efforts girls we will work on it at training.
A much better start to the game this week with the boys matching the opposition very well. A good effort from everyone this week. Manny played well in the back line and had a lot to contend with as their forwards were very fast. Scott played a blinder in goals … the score line would have been a lot higher if it wasn’t for his intelligent play. The box of chocolates goes to Felix today for his ripper goal that he scored from a rebound off a free kick.
Best on ground: Scott, Felix and Marcus
On a day when we all needed a hot chocolate the boys braved the cold and took to the field.
In a quick start to the diamonds they managed to get ahead 2-0.The boys then fought back before half time with a goal from Felix to make it 2-1 at half time.
After half time there were high hopes that the boys could make a comeback. With several missed attempts nothing was bouncing the boys way and in a second half that was dominated by spurs. The boys fought hard as always but were unable to come up with a second half goal and the game finished with a 2-1 win to Wodonga.
Great game to all the boys.Under 14’s Girls V Wodonga Diamonds Red PostponedUnder 16’s V Albury City Won 3 – 2
Sam Thorman settles dramatic 2nd place showdown
The 16s took a huge step towards the top of the league with an unsure performance at Aloysius, the visitors providing a late scare with two goals.
Sam Thorman’s late strike took Azar Levenston’s side three points clear of the visitors, who had hit back to bring the scoreline to 3-2 after falling 3 goals behind in the second half.
The hosts looked to be easing to a 2nd consecutive victory on Sunday after a goal from Michael Townsend and a brace from Sam Thorman.
Albury City’s woes were mounting but they turned the game on its head with two goals late in the second half as a result of poor defending.
However, the fairy tale free kick, over 25 yards out, from Sam Thorman was fired in to ultimately win the game.
Hotspurs set a low tempo from the start and undeservedly took the lead early on during the first half. A long ball split the City defence with a pass that picked out Townsend who denied the goalkeeper of receiving the ball.
Thorman then went on to showcase his creative individualism by beating a couple of players before striking the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The home side survived a couple of late first-half scares as Parker produced a series of great 1v1 saves.
But Hotspurs had looked to have had the final say, Thorman curling home an absolutely sensation free kick from over 25 yards out.
Hotspurs didn’t expect two late goals from City, however, as the defence completely shut down near the end of the game.
Hotspurs will travel to Wodonga to face the Diamonds next week in the hopes of adding pressure onto Myrtleford who are leading by 3 points on the AWFA table.Under 16’s V Wodonga Diamonds Won 7 – 3
The game was well played by both teams but spurs came out better off with the first goal scored by Mathew Clarke that was unluckily called offside. Sam Thorman came out of the game with 6 goals next to his name and Mathew with 1. Heathy played great as well as Caleb in the defence. Subash, Alexander and Mitch played well in midfield. Huge thanks to ray for playing with us who performed greatly on field and keeping. Hopefully Lewis will be ready for this week’s game and hopefully Kyle can remember his socks. Now we are equal top with Myrtleford as Albury city beat them. Great work spurs!!Under 17’s Girls V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 0 – 4
Third’s V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 1 – 3
The boys played much better this week against strong opposition. Against a strong wind in the first half the defence of Indra, John,Carl and Karl was excellent and we were unlucky to be two goals down at halftime. Our attack of Indra-Sen, Ben and Jim got going in the second half. Ben scored a top goal and we looked as though we might get a draw but a late goal by Diamonds completed the scoring. Hamish, Subash and Will played well in midfield and the whole team should be pleased with their efforts.
Over 35’s V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 3 – 4
A much better performance than last week. I think playing on a smaller ground suits our style of play (& less ground to cover always helps). The 1st 10 minutes were played with gusto but some slack play towards the middle resulted in us giving the lead to Diamonds & we were playing catch up football (again). Simple & unselfish passing inside their box to an unmarked Eddie resulted in our first goal & we went to the break 1-2 down. In both halves they slipped through our defences & put some powerful shots away into the back of the netting. We began to trade goal for goal with them. The 2nd half goals resulted from some brutal tackles on us outside the penalty area & our free kick specialist Kelvin bent them like Beckham into the net. In the last 10 minutes we were all over them but despite numerous efforts from us their luck held out & denied us a draw.
Reserve Women V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 0 – 6
Well the score doesn’t reflect how hard the team played today, the wind seemed to work against us with a few unlucky goals and we just didn’t seem to finish off our chances.
The team must have enjoyed some chocolate before the game, awesome energy booster as we started off strong and had great intensity throughout the game. Sarah, Kelly, Danni and Nat played well. Gios and KT did well to hold up the middle. Thanks to our keepers – Megan and Beck S who both had good games. We ended up with a few injuries and we also have some recovering from injuries so hopefully everyone has a speedy recovery and are ready for next week against Heart. Well done ladies!! Oh and it must have been the week to forget your socks!!
Reserves V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 1 – 6
Although playing against a strong team the reserves were disappointed with the way they played. The team gave the ball away with poor passing and this made the task much harder than it needed to be. The highlight was a cracking free kick by Jon Cochrane. Zac Brodie, Irish and Zac Francis played well.
Ladies V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 0 – 3
Today was a tough game for the ladies against a very fit and skilled opponent, with the score ending up 3-0. Coach Eggy made some changes at the half, and the players responded accordingly, keeping the diamonds scoreless in the second half. A superb effort by Sim in goals and a brilliant header save by Bec Briggs spurred the team on, and the players made some really positive plays up the field. Today really was a team effort, and all the girls played their role. Standout performances included sim, Beth and Bec up back, and Kendall, Nat and Claire in the midfield. The defensive talk is starting to show in our playing and the skills are getting better each week as a result of our efforts at training. Top effort everyone!
Seniors V Wodonga Diamonds Lost 0 – 4
The Seniors continued their poor run of results with a disappointing game on Sunday. Supporters can see that this team can achieve much more and
after this week’s bye we look forward to the team having some better luck and achieving the wins which they are capable of getting.
