Match reports
U10 Hotspurs Gold v Albury City White
We had two away but the nice and sporting Albury City loaned us two players so all kids could play without using any subs.
It was a game with lots of goals as the defensive structure, especially our team was in disarray with players being too keen to go forward leaving us outnumbered at the back.
Johnathon was our standout defender with great positioning and steely determination. Rupert pulled off the save of the day, he stopped a powerful City shot with his face #falcon.
Dawson showed great drive in the first half down the left wing and hit a number of outstanding crosses into the danger zone. Ava showed pace and power and scored a great goal. Dawson scored from close range after some good team passing set him up with a tap in. Brodie showed his usual craftiness and also scored a nice goal. Caitlin and Tomoki were composed and used control and looked to share the ball with accurate passes. Ian played well in goals first half then showed his speed in the second half putting the City defence under a lot of pressure.
Well done team, you may lose structure but you play with great spirit and have lots of fun.
Under 11’s V Wangaratta Won 3 – 2
A foggy morning saw the boys play their first game on the main field at Aloysius Park. They came up against a much improved opponent since their last encounter and it is a credit as their great effort as a team that they came away with a hard fought win.
In the first half, Will Pargeter played strongly in defense, and was well supported by Bailey down the line. A corner led to a chip over the goalie’s head by Sami to put us in the lead. Midway through the half, Wangaratta were able to break through our defenses and score, but excellent passing throughout by Clarky, Kristian and Zac paid off when James was able to make a break and score again before half time.
In the second half, Murph took over as keeper, with Haber adding his speed and finesse to the attack. Harry took a breakaway run to score early, and then it was a very close battle for much of the remainder of the game, with Nimod, Jack and Sanjay working well to move the ball forward, and Toby clearing from the back. Murph put in a great half as keeper, but even with his tiger like reflexes, he was unable to stop a penalty shot near the end by Wangaratta. Overall, the boys put in a great effort and are really developing their skills as a team. A satisfying victory!
Under 12’s V Wangaratta Lost 0 – 4
Wangaratta scored twice in the first half. Firstly after our super goal keeper Will hesitated for only a fraction of a second allowing a Wangaratta player to get boot on ball in the goal area, and secondly after some strong defending the ball came loose to a Wangaratta player and was hammered in. Will has been brilliant all season saving lots of goals as has Zach our other goal keeper.
We won a few corners that were taken very well by Josh however we just couldn’t get to the drop of the ball or hit it first time allowing Wangaratta to clear the ball. Our jockeying was generally poor with players jumping in and allowing Wangaratta to move the ball too easily out of their defence and then deep into their attack where Will worked overtime keeping out any more first half goals. Hotspurs created a few half chances however we struggled to generate any power in our shots.
In the second half we created a few chances and almost scored after another Wangaratta handball with Kye playing on after initially hesitating expecting a free kick. It just wasn’t our day and we turned to ball over many times as we battled to maintain possession. Wangaratta scored two second half goals as Hotspurs were unable to provide enough pressure on their shots.
To their credit the Hotspurs U12s did not give up and despite the disappointing loss continued to show the great sportsmanship that they have displayed all year.
Wangaratta were to strong and determined on the day consistently beating us to the ball and their intensity and run set them up for a good win.
Sarsha was very good in defence and deserves a special mention.
Albury City this week, Go Hotspurs.
Coaches Awards this week – Sarsha, Marcus, Riley and ?
Under 12’s Girls V Wangaratta Won 7 – 0
A slow start for the girls with everyone returning this week and being available to play. We passed the ball well and held possession in our half for most of the game. The girls were only one nil up at half time and really finished the game off strongly with Halle 2 goals, Sarsha 2 and Bella Godfrey 3 goals. Ev put her hand up at half time and gave up her field time to play keeper for the team, which was great to see.
McDonalds Awards went to Laura, Bella Godfrey and Ev. who all had great games. Well done girls!!
Under 13’s V Wangaratta Lost 2 – 3
What a great game. The boys took the game right up to the opposition. Felix scored the first goal from a nice passage of play from the team and Kye scored the second from pass from Connor. Kye was unlucky not to score a second from a pass by Josh. Marcus was once again dependable in the back line. Connor was unlucky on a couples occasion not to score – hitting the upright and missing a header.
Goals: Felix 1, Kye 1
Coach’s awards: Marcus, Felix and Josh
Under 14’s V Wangaratta Won 8 – 1
Sunday’s game kicked off on the Aloysius main ground, a new experience for the team who had been instructed to play like a top side, in John’s words “Ruthless”. The surface was nice apart from a bit of lumpy sand in the middle of the park, which led to the team moving the ball forward using the wing. The game started off with a good tempo and the spurs knocked the ball around nicely. It paid off when the first couple of goals were slotted due to great wide-play and accurate crossing.
As the whole team settled in and found their touch they began playing an exciting and unpredictable style of football. More goals came from through balls and long shots.
At half time John provided a mental Tiger-Balm rub down-The spurs must enforce more pressure on Wangaratta to help build towards the finals. He also reminded the team to show the main-ground spectators what the Hotspurs youngsters are capable of.
Early in the second half, a penalty many would label as “soft” was awarded to our opposition. The offender was kicking herself when that ball was put in the back of the net. But soon after, a long range strike found the goal and the team continued their rhythm until the final whistle.
Great effort team, we look forward to next week’s challenge.
Under 14’s Girls V Wangaratta Lost 0 – 2
After last week’s performance against one of the top teams in United (where everyone was exceptional) this week’s effort was a bit disappointing to say the least. We are still short on numbers but this is no excuse as the 12 girls that step up each week are giving their all and were no exception this week, however a few of our older girls had an off day for one reason or another, that is sport it happens. So heads up, get to training this week please, think positively towards this weekend and play like you did the previous weekend and we will make a show of it against City.
Hopefully we will welcome back Mercy as she should be back from her tennis sabbatical in America and Isabella should also return this weekend
Under 16’s V Wangaratta Lost 0 – 2
Under 17’s Girls v Diamonds Round 14 Deferred catch up game (lost 8 – 0)
It was a very cold night that greeted a team of girls who were minus a few players due to work commitments and the like, with Lilly, Mary and Anna stepping up from the 14’s to help out.
The girls trotted out onto La Trobe under lights on the big pitch for the first time, wearing black armbands in respect of Pop Chant (Roy’s dad) who sadly passed away the previous morning, with a fill in coach it all looked like the occasion was too much for them as they went behind 2 nil in the first 2 minutes, however to their credit the girls really stepped it up a couple of notches and played some enterprising football over the next 15 minutes against the league leaders, then all of a sudden another 2 goals down, and that was the story of the night really. The girls played really well in patches however when conceding a goal they would concede a second one rather quickly and then muscle up for a bit again.
The second half saw some very close chances go begging for the Hotspurs girls, we just lacked a bit of pace as their defensive line was very quick and shut down nearly every attacking move we could muster.
In the future working on first touches and passing control would help this situation.
A big thank you to those girls who came to play, also thank you for listening and giving it your best shot, and thank you to the brave parents who came to watch it wasn’t a friendly night weather wise.
Last thank you goes to Jane Riley from Diamonds for lending our girls a warm blanket for on the bench as it was very cold in the dugout sitting on the pine, a rather kind gesture from an opposing club, thanks Jane.
KFC Awards winners were Chelsea Condon for an excellent game in the mid field and Lateisha Torney for an outstanding game in defence.
Under 17’s Girls V Wangaratta BYE
Third’s V Wangaratta BYE
Over 35’s V Wangaratta Lost 0 – 2
On a bleak old day we welcomed back a few of our players who had been absent for a while & subsequently had 3 subs on the bench.
After last weeks belting we played with a bit more conviction & were unlucky not to put a least one away during the first half.
A spinning ball on a wet pitch determined their first goal towards the half time break.
Again in the second half we were very competitive but a lack of concentration & control saw them grab another goal.
There was some very good movement of the ball during the entire game & we had our chances but could not put that ball in the back of the net.
A great effort from all concerned & a vast improvement on our previous game.
Reserve Women V Wangaratta Draw 1 – 1
A disappointing result for the girls who have been playing really well together. everyone seemed a bit flat and even though we dominated the play and held possession we just could not get over the line. Good games were had by KT and Jess who scored a fantastic goal. Kaylah had a solid game in defence. Lets get to training girls and keep working hard.
Reserves V Wangaratta Won 7 – 0
Our biggest win of the year. The Ressies continued their good recent form. Irish starred with a hatrick, Milky got two and Viders and Tuksar got the other goals. The defence was great in keeping a clean sheet. Joel in goals and Middi and Zac were excellent. Well done team.
Ladies V Wangaratta Won 3 – 1
Seniors V Wangaratta Lost 1 – 3
After our good wins in recent weeks the seniors did not play as well as they can. We need to take our chances but Wang were better on the day so we need to be more consistent for the whole ninety minutes if we are to beat these teams. Eggy, Sam Thorman, Drummo and Paul Kinning were best for Spurs.
