U11 Girls – 2017 League Champions
Saturday v Wangaratta won 2 – 1
A freezing cold wind was blowing across south Wang reserve as the girls took on the 2nd placed team but it didn’t take long for the girls to get hot as they played a fast paced game against a very good Wang side. It was a very even contest with neither side having many chances in the first half, and the game was locked up at 0-0 at the break. Wang came out firing and managed to score a breakaway goal not long after the break. The Spurs girls lifted their work rate and started to run over the top of Wang, the girls created chance after chance but couldn’t seem to slot any in. Eventually we found the back of the net to even it up with a fine finish by Ava. With 5 minutes to go, Seanna took the lead with a deserving goal as she ran the backs ragged. Wang came at us again but the girls dug deep and held on for a thrilling victory. As usual, Alex and Bella had great games, but special mention to Poppy, Seanna and Alice who turned the game for us by tearing up the left side of the field. With only 2 games to play, and 6 point clear, all of a sudden, a win or draw on Sunday would see the team be crowned League Champions.
Sunday v Diamonds won 5 – 1
A huge crowd was on hand to cheer on the girls who only needed a win or a draw to claim the League Champion title. We had a full squad for the first time in a long time, and everyone was itching to go. It was a tight first half, but Spurs had the majority of play, however seemed a bit nervous and couldn’t put any goals away. At the break it was 0-0. The girls were asked to lift their effort in the second half and after a few minutes the game was about to change. A free kick was awarded to spurs outside the box, a defensive 10 player wall was set and Elisha stepped up to take the kick. In what can only be described as goal of the year, Elisha managed to clear the wall with a thunderbolt strike, then dip the ball under the crossbar to find the top corner of the goal! The crowd erupted in jubilation. This goal seemed to lift the team and soon after the goals started to flow. Seanna had another strong game slotting 2 nice goals, while Tahlia and Ruby both found the back of the net. The final score was 5-0. Daisy had a great game in Goals then on the field, Ruby was strong on her return from an extended holiday break, but really there was not a bad player in the team. Everyone once again played brilliantly which is why they have been crowned 2017 U11 Girls League Champions. It was really great to see how the girls held off celebrating their achievement until after they had shaken the opposition teams hands which is a great sign of sportsmanship.
Well done girls, you have earnt the title!
Now for the Cup. Let’s keep up the numbers at training so we can give ourselves the best chance to take a shot at glory in the Cup finals.

11 Boys v St Pats won 6 – 1
It was a pressure game on Sunday and our team did not disappoint. There were many highlights, including Louis with one of the saves of the season in goals. Aydan scored a massive 3 goals and along with Mitchel (1 goal) the boys were always dangerous up forward. Daisy was on fire with her throw ins, and Ryan finally scored a goal off his right boot! Dustin scored a late goal in the second half and the excitement from him and his teammates was fantastic to watch. Riley did a fantastic pass in the midfield and did the team proud as captain today . We have a couple of byes ( and a make up game against Wang) coming up so let’s get to training each week so we don’t lose the momentum.
Awards – Louis, Dustin, Aydan
Go Spurs!
13 Boys v St Pats won 4 – 2
The team started strongly but found it difficult to create a clear chance, final pass not quite good enough. With the wind helping, Ava bombed our first goal from distance and that helped settle our nerves and the team responded positively with relentless attack after attack which lead to our second goal by Brodie with another great strike giving their goalie no chance. In the second half Tomo was torturing their midfield and defence with skill and speed they could not handle and lead to them fouling Tomo in the box. Tomo calmly slotted the subsequent penalty off only a few steps. Jack got our fourth buy pouncing on their error which gave us breathing space as St Pats manged to score two great individual goals of their own. Coach had asked at half time for the team not to concede a goal but a good win was achieved anyway.
Reminder: Training Thursday 5-6pm, Game v Boomers Saturday Glen park 12pm kick-off (11:30am please) then Sunday we play Heart at Willow park Wodonga.
Please advise if you are not available to play via team app or at training thank you.
16 Girls v Melrose won 3 – 0
A bit of a slow start for the girls but they played so well together as a team. The girls passed the ball around well and created many scoring opportunities. A really strong team effort from the girls who give everything with only 11 players week after week!! Awards to Laura, Ava and Paige. Keep up the great work girls and the results will come!! Well Done. Also a huge thank you to our regular Under 13s with out you we could not play.
Thirds v St Pats won 3 – 0
The Thirds put in a sterling effort on Sunday to run out 3-0 winners. The team was back to full strength with several players returning from illness and injury and they started well and kept the heat on the opposition all game. The first goal came when Zac crossed the ball in and it slipped behind the keeper. Before half time Ol got on the end of a beautifully placed cutback and scored. In the second half Zac ran the ball down the field and shot accurately. Great to have Mitchell back in the team. Thanks again to the Sixteens who helped out and to Roland for running the lines.
Over 35s v St Pats lost 0 – 1
What an extraordinary effort in the first half against last years League & Cup champions! We had lost none of our momentum having had byes for the last 2 weekends & were constantly creating chances & opportunities for ourselves. Spurs controlled the play & the movement of the ball to feet was beautiful to watch. It was so disappointing not to be able to convert those chances to goals.
0-0 at the break &10 minutes into the 2nd half, a small lack of concentration & a simple defensive error is all that cost us the game. As hard as we tried we could not claw that goal back to level the score again. Nobody would disagree that we were the better team on the day & as long as we continue with our consistent form the results will come our way.
Reserve Ladies Deferred Game from Round 5 v Wangaratta won 2 – 1
A road trip to Wangaratta for a Saturday afternoon game, we had a slightly different line up with some regular players not able to play. Well the sun was out but Wang had a bitterly cold wind. Within the first couple of minutes of the game Wang’s right winger surprised herself and us by scoring from a far, a little hard to stop when it went high and Simone had the sun in her eyes. We were playing a bit of ping pong in the first half but settled better in the second half, we need to learn to relax a bit more on the ball and look for opportunities instead of hoping for the best. Another solid effort by the backline and we thank Caitlyn and Bella for helping out our numbers for the day. A nail biting game where we seen our two goals conceded in the dying minutes of the game. Keely moved into centre mid and cracked a nice long shot but the ball hit the crossover and bounced back into play seeing the goalkeeper grab it but she swung her arms back into the goal area, which resulted in a goal. Equaliser! Fantastic call from the linesmen!
In the last 30seconds of the game Yasmine scored a brilliant goal and gave us the win we deserved. We were the better team on the day, we just make it hard scoring goals!! Sorry we make it hard converting our goals!!
Best on ground was Keely Howard. Keep up the great work girls we are not far from finals now!
Thank you to Snowy and Justin Godfrey for running the lines.
Round 18 v St Pats lost 0 – 2
It was difficult to back up from our road trip to Wang, which seen our named 15 down to 11 at the start of the game. It seemed like it was going to be a tough day with some people not feeling 100% and feeling a little soreness from the day before. We were lucky that some players were just late to the game so we ended up with a much needed bench.
With another different line up and players playing positions they aren’t used to playing we didn’t seem to play our true potential. Our style of play was affected by people not communicating and not trusting that someone was going to play their position with players trying to cover one another’s position which created some gaps. So not our best game. St Pats had a quick paced forward and they continued to get a long ball to her making it a hard day for our backline and keeper. We again had trouble converting goals and opportunities to score.
Best on ground was Keely Howard, another solid effort in the backline.
Thank you to Sarsha for running our lines.
I hope Townie doesn’t have too many grey hairs from the weekend – tough job coach!
Well girls we have 2 byes (Rd19 / Rd20) and then Rd21 we play Albury City, with another bye (R22) to follow!! So try and get to training so we can practice some things and put in some preparation for the Albury City game before we face the finals!
Reserve Men v StPats drew 3 – 3
The Ressies played well early and had a good lead but our opponents finished hard to snatch a draw. Ash Hockin, Zac Brodie. John Irvine, Dinesh and Sam King were the best for Spurs.
Senior Ladies v St Pats drew 1 – 1
The ladies once again had a very slow start allowing paddies to get a goal in the first 5 minutes, we then settled into the game through some fantastic communication and positive play. The midfield girls did a spectacular job of shutting down their strongest player which lead us to some great possession resulting in a goal! The second half we remained strong but unfortunately we couldn’t get another goal. Well done to Anna for stepping up in goals again today, you absolutely smashed it!
Another great team performance managing to get a point off a team that is higher on the ladder. Keep up the hard work girls.
Senior Men v St Pats won 4 – 2
The senior men got back to winning ways with a good win on Sunday. Jerome scored a hatrick and Jon Cochrane got the other goal.Lewis Parrett, Luke Dahl and Ranga were all outstanding in this win.
