Match Reports
11 Boys v Cobram drew 3 – 3
This was the game that will bring the crowds back to junior football.
We started fast, dominating the first half with many shots hitting the post or being saved by their keeper. We scored from 2 well directed corners from Cooper and both goals practically being willed across the line.
Missing our star keeper Ethan this week, Sam stepped up to the plate and made many a great save. However the well drilled Cobram fought back going into the break 1-2.
We started the second half a little sluggish, allowing Cobram to pierce our staunched defences with a few twinkle toed moves scoring twice more to have them in front 3-2.
The group fought on, chased, ran, chased and ran.
With seconds to go, our gun midfielder Lenny launched a long ball over their defences where Cooper crossed into Josh who volleyed a cracker into the top corner. It was a sight to behold. The crowd went nuts and all mothers had great days.
We know what we are capable of, we will beat Cobram on Lambert Park.(tickets selling fast)
Awards this week were hard to pinpoint because everyone played the team game and gave their all when their time came.
Goals: Aydan, Josh, OG
12 Boys v Cobram lost 0 – 8
The Cobram district representative team are a strong unit.
With the majority of the U/12s being made up of U/11s who had just given their all 10 mins prior, this was always going to be a tough match-up.
With Ethan missing this week, Al wore the gloves and gave his heart and soul but unfortunately the Cobram strikers noticed that he could quite touch the cross bar and aimed for his over his head.
Despite the oppositions noticeable size difference, Spurs U/12s were not intimidated and used their bodies well, including Lenny with some aggressive body work and Daisy and Ruby protecting the ball well.
The backs needs a special mention, the score doesn’t reflect how well they defended.
Al gets an award this week as he really gave his all in goals. Ben McNay gets an award too as he played one of his better games, leading the way with his ball use and second efforts.
I feel we will turn the corner this week against Heart.
11 Girls v Wangaratta lost 0 – 3
It was a tough road trip for the girls and unfortunately had their first loss for the season. With 5 girls out for the game, the team battled extremely hard but ran out of legs without any subs available.
Ava had another cracking game in goals pulling off some magnificent saves, while the backline worked overtime all day and never gave up. With a bit of luck the girls could have snagged a few goals but it wasn’t to be.
Mia worked hard up front and later in the midfield and was awarded the Urban Graze award this week.
Hard luck girls, but shows us we still need to work on our positioning, passing and finishing.
13 Girls v Cobram won 11 – 0
What a beautiful day for Mother’s day and where else would you rather be than a trip to Cobram to watch Soccer. With only 10 players the girls knew they had a big task ahead of them. They started strong and passed the ball around well creating many scoring chances. Keely lead the defenders from the back with nothing getting through to Lilly. The goals were scored around by the team. Ruby played well on the wing and had a great tussle with the opposition. Daisy held the midfield well and pushed the ball through. This team can play some beautiful football together, if you have not watched them come and support the young girls. Awards to Emma for her great defending and to Georgia for going into goals second half for the team!! Keep up the awesome work girls- Thanks to Craig and Ava for running the line.
14 Boys v Cobram won 4 – 3
We got off to a slow start and defended for most of the first half. I think the very narrow ground made it difficult for us to play on where as Cobram are use to it. Cobram managed to get a deflected close range shot over the line to lead 1 nil at half time.
The kids knew at half time that they had under preformed and came out more determined in the second half and got two goals to take the lead. Cobram to their credit hit back to level it. Then we scored and they equalised again.
It was getting very intense and stressful. We managed to break open their defence with some good and accurate passing from Ava and Dawson to set Tomo up to shoot passed the oncoming goalkeeper from distance and their defence was unable to get back quick enough to stop it going in.
In the dying minutes Cobram got a free kick on top of the box which was nerve racking until we saw the ball fly high and wide.
Goals: Tomo 3, Dawson 1.
16 Boys v Cobram lost 1 – 6
Hotspurs take kick off to start the match for the first half and constructed many free flowing attacks but they were instantly shut down by Cobram’s strong and quick centre backs. Cobram score first from a deflection that came off Harrison n . After a fearsome counter attack from Cobram , Hotspurs’s defence couldn’t keep up with Cobram’s quick counter attack that lead to Harrison pulling out some comfortable saves but still leaked 3 well placed goals through. The last kick of the first half featured a long ball over spurs’s defence which lead to Harrison Nagle sprinting out to claim the ball on the edge of the box but unfortunately took Cobram’s striker out giving them a penalty which they converted.
Cobram start the game off retaining possession for most of the halve witch lead to a couple of simple through balls that skimmed through spur’s defence that lead to a wonderful chip over Harrison Nagle . Spurs came fighting back with great pieces of football being played in and around the box but couldn’t hit the back of the net. This halve brought the best of of the whole team with a well fought and deserved penalty awarded to hotspurs. With josh gardener hitting the back of the net reducing the deficit as giving some life and hope for the whole team. The match ended with a score at 6-1.

Thirds v Cobram won 7 – 2
Quite an extraordinary match for the Thirds this week going in against a team who had only previously lost one match. Coach Joel was the goalkeeper so Ben and Zach were the stand-in coaches for the morning. Within a minute a through ball from Mitch was headed into the goal mouth by Bautista and Spurs were on their way. Not ten minutes later Ol deflected a header from Denzel and we had our second. The team could do no wrong. By the end of the half we were leading 4-0 thanks to a long scoring shot from Denzel and a header by Manny after a corner. In the second half there were a few patches where the Spurs just lost concentration and Cobram managed to score two goals but even so we managed another three – through Bautista after a scuffle in the goalsquare, then Manny got his second then Charters made the fnal score of the day. All in all it was a terrific display of teamwork and skills. Accolades to the backline who never let the opposition feel in control when they tried to attack. Well done to all. Great coaching! Thanks to Helen for running the lines.
