11 Girls – League Champions v Wangaratta won 3 – 0
This was a really important game for the girls as a win would see them crowned League Champions, while a loss would mean they would have needed to win next week with half the team away due to other commitments. As has been the case for the last 2 seasons, the girls love the big games and came out firing. Playing the second placed Wangaratta, the Spurs girls took control early and with the aid of the icy cold howling wind, kept their highly fancied opposition in their own half for the entire half. The Spurs girls pounded the Wangaratta goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. It took a freak corner from Elisha that curled in without anyone touching it to break the deadlock. Once again, the Wang defence battled on and rebounded attack after attack. With only a few minutes before half time remaining and the prospect of running into the gale forced winds only a goal up had the coach on edge, but then a rocket shot forced a handball in the box which resulted in a penalty. Elisha drilled the penalty giving the keeper no chance. A minute later, Elisha found some space and slotted a great goal from the edge of the box which gave the girls a 3-0 lead at half time. The second half was much the same, attack after attack diffused by the Wang defence. Wang did manage a couple of attacks but Taylor in goal was rock solid and ensured the girls kept a clean sheet and claimed back to back League Titles. Alice played a blinder of a game on the right wing making countless runs and crosses, while Eloise, Zali and Taylor at the back played their usual reliable and safe games. Well done 2018 League Champions – Lucy Brennan, Ava Whitfield, Zali Sims, Taylor Furze, Poppy Millgate-Kimball, Eloise Allwood, Alice McIntosh, Isla Smith, Elisha Wild, Seanna Nichols, Imogen Arcus, Bianca Compton, Chelsea Alvey, Rylee Steele and Mia Sheather.
11 Boys v Myrtleford won 2 – 1 League Champions
Well done to our 11 boys for winning the League Title.
When Myrtleford arrived they brought the weather with them, the coldest day on Lambert Park in recorded history. The game started well on our terms with a dominant first 10 minutes ending with a Cooper goal from long range. To Myrtlefords credit, they fought back hard and managed to get one out the back and after a couple of mistimed clearances levelled the scores.
The game turned into a real gritty fight, with the boys knowing the very weight of what a goal meant for the League Title. Josh managed to power one home in close and the coach decided to shut up shop. Lenny drove the bus into the sweeper position, we hung on to the end.
Winning ugly is a sign of a great team. Today was a great team effort.
Now onto the Cup!
Goals: Cooper and Josh
12 Boys v Myrtleford lost 0 – 5
With numerous illnesses, heartstrings and absences for the team stocks, today was always going to be tough. We had our chances with a few shots being saved by a pretty good keeper.
But again, with our U/11 boys coming off a dour battle in the game prior, it was a tough ask and our energy levels began to wane. The final score really only an indication of the two keepers heights. Unlucky at times for Spurs. If we bring energy for the finals anything can happen.
13 Girls v Myrtleford won 9 – 1 League Champions
A great finish to the season for the Under 13 girls. On a very cold day the girls started well and were passing the ball nicely and creating many scoring chances. Our defence was super solid and some days you got to love the cross bar!! We went into the half 6 nil up. These girls have had a brilliant season together and we cant wait for the finals run home- awards to Ava who played 2nd half in goals, Eloise for helping out on a very cold day and to Georgia who has improved greatly. Well Done girls- Super Proud- enjoy week off before finals!!
13 Boys v Myrtleford lost 4 – 1
The team were on fire early, totally dominating the early exchanges and were unlucky not to grab a couple of early goals. Eventually Spurs managed to grab the first goal with Fraser slotting a nice goal. The team worked hard all over the field and didn’t give their opposition any time on the ball and went to the break deserving to be 1 up. Running into the -5 degree C howling wind in the second half didn’t help the team as Myrtleford started to get on top. Spurs were not able to maintain the pressure they had put on their opposition in the first half and unfortunately ended up going down 4-1. Max Geering was outstanding as attacking Mid and clear best on ground, Cooper Hale and Lily were solid in the back while Cody and Jack worked hard up front. Frasier and Jesse ran their legs off out wide while Max McCormack, Jake and Lenny worked hard in the backline. Oli made some cracking saves in goal and didn’t deserve to have 4 put in past him. Taylin ran hard all game while Alonso and Copper Howard also showed their versatility slotting into several different positions. The team showed they can match it with the top sides but they just need to ensure they work hard for the entire 60 minutes. Do this and who knows what can happen in the finals.
Reserve Ladies v Myrtleford won 3 – 1
The ladies are continuing their winning streak into the lead up to finals, winning their final match for the season 3-1.
Jess B, who had an exceptional game, started off the goal scoring with an impressive corner kick. Using the strong winds to her advantage, she curved the ball straight into the net untouched. The lead was short-lived, however, with Myrtleford taking advantage of the brief lull after our goal to score their own. Christie read the ball well but despite getting a hand to it in an attempt to deflect, the ball still managed to hit the post at the right angle to find the back of the net, a rare occurrence when Christie is in goals.
The ladies were unwaivered, and it wasn’t long before their dominating posession provided Bella with the opportunity to score the next goal. Laura, Shelby and Yas had plenty of ball on the wing, making plenty more opportunities for our team in Myrtleford’s half. Corner kicks were plentiful in this match and Anna and Jess B took full advantage of them. Jess B made another amazing kick on goal, and after speculation as to where the ball hit the post, it came down to the refs decision to call it a no goal.
Second half was just as intense, with Christie, Caitie, Snowy, Millie, Kelly and Sammie all working hard to prevent any more goals for the opposition. Jess A and Alesha also worked hard up front, with Jess A using her ball skills to provide opportunities to move up the field into Myrtleford’s half. Alesha was able to make a break and have a shot on goal. Her kick cleared the goalie to swish into the net, putting us comfortably in front and sealing our win.
This is the ladies 7th consecutive match win, and with the inclusion of the byes their 9th consecutive win, an impressive streak that they hope to continue on with their secured spot in finals.
Thank you to Justin Godfrey for running the lines again for us this week. We’d also like to thank anyone who has run lines in previous games for us or provided support for us this season, we greatly appreciate it.
