Match Reports
11 Girls Hotspurs v Melrose drew 0 – 0
A great game and team effort from the girls, particularly given a number of the Team were unavailable. Thanks to Muireann (from the Miniroos) for stepping up and helping out the girls.
Stand-in Coach Craig asked the Team to give their all, and the girls responded. The Spurs dominated possession throughout the match, finding space down the wings and centring the ball well.
The girls were relentless in attack with numerous strikes on goal. Rylee in particular seems to relish her attacking position with a couple of great runs, but Melrose to their credit defended well. Muireann played really well in attack, making some decisive efforts and runs on the left wing. Alice also played well coming out of goals in the second half, with her attacking runs on the right wing.
Equally impressive for this match was the team’s solid defence and midfield, severely limiting the opposition’s advances and attacking opportunities. Bianca and Lucy had their best games so far, helping out Eloise, Seanna and Zali in defence. Imogen, Mia and Poppy were also solid as always in the midfield.
Well done to all the girls – another great effort from the Team. Big thanks to Alice and Imogen for keeping goals – another clean sheet. A special mention to Muireann for her impressive contribution, demonstrating some great skills and potential.
11 Boys v Melrose drew 4 – 4
Having won the league last week the boys knew today was all about fun.
With no Ethan in goals our structure was a little lacking. Melrose started the game a lot stronger than us and struck first.
This shocked a few in the crowd, knowing that this juggernaut of a side would have a game on their hands.
Josh managed to level the scores before half time with a timely chip over the keepers head.
Melrose started the second half on fire taking the lead again before Carl got on the end of a corner and our Captain Isaiah managed to pounce on a saved penalty to put us 3-2 up with 10 mins to play. It must be said that Melrose had more to play for and it really showed, they pressed harder and never gave in; they created their own luck which ended with them taking the lead with only minutes to spare.
This shook up the our boys, hell-bent on not going into the finals with just their second loss of the season they came back, gaining a free-kick with only a minute remaining, Cooper stood over it and cracked it into the top corner from range.
A well-deserved draw, with an undermanned side, against a good opposition.
We said that winning ugly is a sign of a good side like we did last week.
I reckon this week was tougher and we can take positives out of that in readiness for the finals.
Having a bit of a flat game in a dead rubber is much more suitable than in the first week of the finals.
Thanks to Sam and Dustin for filling in as stand in keepers.
Goals: Cooper, Josh, Isaiah, Carl
Training is Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 -5:30 for the duration of the finals.
12 Boys v Melrose won 6 – 2
We were down after a dominant start to the game, Melrose went forward twice and scored twice.
Then the team really switched on. Alonso was a powerhouse in the middle, combining with Cooper and Ruby in the middle it seemed like we have a great midfield mix for the finals.
Ben proved his worth up front cracking a couple of goals, and Lenny went forward to score too. Al had an opportunity to crack one outside the box but just slipped wide.
Trae starred as a stand-in keeper in the second half, he showed great agility and was clearing the ball past the half way with his kick-outs.
Alonso has really come of age and got a nice reward with a hat trick.
Great team effort, and a nice win to cap off an up and down season.
Anything can happen in the finals.
Goals: Alonso x3, Ben x2, Lenny
Thirds v Melrose lost 0 – 3
This was a game best forgotten, a blip in an otherwise hard-fought season. Melrose were the better side on the day and deserved their win. We were flat and out-of-sorts and let the opposition dictate play and though we had a few shots on goal we spent too much of our time just trying to defend. The game had no effect on our very creditable third placing on the ladder so now we can put it aside and crank up for the quarter final. We are capable of some truly scintillating play so let’s get out there and show what we can do. Go Spurs!
And thanks to Shane for running the lines.
Over 35s v Melrose lost 2 – 3
This was a match that saw us with the goal of getting a win or a draw to hold down 5th position in the league. Unfortunately after 3 consecutive byes, our touch and decision making had deserted us and we were quickly down 3 goals. We slowly worked ourselves back into the game and were rewarded when Damien Naymar Harding smashed a stunning goal just before halftime and was unlucky not to get a brace before the break. The second half was started with much more control and effort from the Spur’s lads and we were just rewarded with Jim Brodie calmly slotting a goal on his second attempt. John Butsy Irvine was called on to make a save from point blank and the Spur’s fired up even more. Unfortunately we from there we just couldn’t find the back of the net and the game ended in a 3-2 defeat. It was good to see Gary Kavanagh back in the strip and with some of our starting line-up returning next week after unavailability over the weekend we are looking forward to taking on St Pats this weekend.
Reserve Men v Melrose 1 – 6
Unfortunately after our loss the week before we had nothing to play for in our final game of the year verses Melrose. After an unexpected wonder strike from Jeremy Norton put us 1-0 up we were put to the sword by an unrelenting Melrose and finished 6-1 down. This year we have welcomed a lot of new faces to the club and Sundays game will have been the last for some but we hope that you have enjoyed your time with us. The reserves have used somewhere around 34 different player this year and we have relied on a lot of support from some of the under 16’s, thirds and over 35’s to get us through some of the games. We would also like to thank Ian Belgre for his role as manager and Robert Tuksar for his support as well as well as the supporters who put up with our antics every weekend. Hopefully the experience that this team gained during this year will help them make the finals and to continue to move forward next year. Finally, I would like to thank everyone of the players for what they have offered this year and letting me return to coaching, whilst it has been trying at times there isn’t a day that I don’t walk away from the playing group without feeling some form pride, to the team, thank you very much.
