Match Reports
11 Boys v Albury City won 6 – 1
With Dustin going down with a hammy at training, Lenny smashing his head into the goals, Cooper being over worked on the athletics track to a point of turning pale white, and Aydan getting a shocking dose of croup we were wondering how many fit players were going to arrive at Kelly Park to take on Albury City.
The whole lot of them. 16 players, with 5 eager bodies on the bench.
After a quality week at training we started very well with Lenny slotting one from a set play.
With 5 impact players on the bench we welcomed Billy back from injury and Will Hale who has really stepped up his game since coming in from the Miniroos. He managed a brace before Brad dragged him again and wrapped him in cotton wool for next week.
Cooper managed to get a Hat-trick from midfield and provided others with plenty of opportunity.
Our backs were a determined lot this week, Dustin showed unbelievable courage, resilience and healing power suffering from a high grade hamstring tear on Thursday night, to a sensational game, albeit used sparingly on Sunday.
Murray played a great game when called upon, he has become a very reliable defender and does exactly what the teams needs when it’s his turn. Charlie, John and Sam were the reliable stalwarts our team depends on. Nick was given a task in midfield and showed his great capabilities. Carl was the general in the middle.
Once the game was iced we were able to rotate our players around a bit, with the boys who were playing U/12s across the border given a breather, and others given a good opportunity.
We are slowly building something and the boys are excited, winning 6-1 in a game where we can see vast room for improvement is a good sign.
Training this Tuesday 4:30 to 5:40 and Thursday 4:30 to 6PM.
Goals: Cooper 3, Will 2, Lenny 1
12 Boys v Boooomers Won 2(3) -2(2) on penalties
Well, well, well. For those that witnessed this game, they will be talking about it in the same breath as biblical stories like David and Goliath. Historical events like Leonidas and the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, and more modern coaching marvels like Carltons 1970 Premiership comeback against Collingwood, and Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League victory at Istanbul.
It was as epic.
Half the team needed to race over the border from Kelly Park where they had just trounced Albury City in the U/11s.
Last time we played Boooomers, it was a 6-0 shellacking. As we have said all along, anything can happen in finals.
The strategy behind this victory was to starve the opposition of their only tactic i.e Boot the ball long and win the footrace to goal.
Trae was ready for them.
This young man was given a role to play on their striker and wore him like a glove, getting to the ball first, clearing it out of danger, winning the race to the next contest, rinse/repeat.
Lenny was superb as always as back up sweeper, Tyreece was courageous, Al and Sam played out of their skin, cutting off many break aways at clutch times, saving shots on goal, or pushing their opponents away from goal.
Daisy was amazing at defensive half, she really steadied the ship and didn’t miss a beat. Ruby and Tahlia were equally as poised with thrusts forwards giving us great opportunities to score.
Cluneinho was as elusive as ever up forward, sometimes even we couldn’t spot him, and like a flash popped up out of nowhere with impact and aggression. Ben really gave his all, and made his presence felt taking their best defender.
Cooper and Alonso controlled the game in the middle, scoring both of our goals in regular time. Their energy in the middle was great to watch against a much bigger opposition.
Our injured and sick players in Dustin and Aydan got amongst it as well, Aydan with some fancy footwork driving the ball forward in the second half before coughing up a lung suffering from severe croup, and Dustin doing his usual clean up jobs in the middle of the park, before he succumbed to his hamstring injury again.
Thanks to AWFAs superb scheduling of finals, our U/13 girls needed to depart at half time, which left our bench as bare as a Tottenham trophy cabinet.
Coopers goal from a corner kick drew us level just before regular time.
Without a bench, the energy levels from our U/11s were started to wane, they just need to hang on during extra time to get a crack at them with penalties.
Cooper cracked his pen, they missed their first penalty sailing over the bar, Lenny got his.
This set the tone, our boys had been practicing penalties for months at the end of training.
Enter Ethan Haberfield. He made two of the mightiest saves, the crowd were on edge, kick the next and the game is ours.
It was fitting that Trae was given the ball. This kid is made for finals. He nailed it. He won us the game.
Brad tested his hammies on the way into the group hug, even they performed well on the day.
Tears flowed, so proud of this team.
What a victory!
Bring the same this Sunday and we go again.
Goals: Alonso and Cooper
13 Girls v Albury City won 13 – 0
what a great result for the girls, they played so well as a team. We took a 3 nil lead into the half, then finished strongly. The goals were shared around. Bring on the semi finlas, the girls are ready, thanks Scott for running the line and all the parents for supporting! !
16 Girls v St Pats won 6 – 0
After 3 weeks off the girls played extremely well and deserve to be in the semi final. Bella, Laura and Ava dominated the mid field while nothing got through our defence, our forwards created many chances. Thanks to Justin for running the line. Bring on finals, great to see all junior girls teams there.
14 Boys 5th v 4th St Pats won 8 – 1
BEST FATHERS DAY GIFT EVER!
That is what the team gave to their fathers in their quarter final match on Sunday.
This is the first time this team has progressed to the semi-finals and they did it with such a dominant performance.
St Pats had the their two best players back in and having lost to them in round 4 (2 – 4) and narrowly beating them (1 – 0) in round 13, we knew it was not going to be easy. And it wasn’t easy. The whole team had to work and fight extremely hard to achieve this result and it was a complete team performance. Was great to have Ian back in goals and stopping all but 1 of St Pats shots. He was greatly helped by our determined defence of Reese, Cody, Rupurt, Jonathon and Ethan with help from the midfield when required.
Our first goal came after only 5 minutes when Tomoki was put through down the left wing and crossed a beautiful ball to Brodie to HEAD home from inside the 6 yard box. The Hotspurs crowd roared in celebration and this seam to SPUR the team on. Defensively we kept them out and then counter attacked with devastating precision and the goals kept flowing. Goals from Brodie, Tomoki, Ava and Dawson saw us go to the break 7 up!
The second half we didn’t let up our defensive effort nor our attack but we were not as lucky in finishing our chances.
Thanks to 13 boys Taylan, Jack and Fraser for their contributions when coming on as subs to do a great job for the team.
Tomoki finished with 5 goals, a fantastic achievement.
Look forward to your semi-final against the League Champions Wang knowing that you are definitely a chance to progress to the Grand Final if you play with the same determination, willingness, team spirit and unity.

16 Boys v St Pats lost 1 – 3
Thirds v Albury City lost 1 – 2
Alas, the end of the season for the Thirds came a little earlier than we had hoped with a 1-2 loss to Albury City on Sunday. It was a tight game with no score until about 10 minutes to go then the opposition scored two quick goals and we found ourselves well and truly on the back foot. It would have been a very different game if only that Spurs ball which hit the side of the post had ricocheted in instead of out! With half a minute to go before full time Ollie lofted a magnificent ball over the keeper’s head and we thus avoided a whitewash. All credit to all the players who never gave up. Once again goalkeeper Will made a few extraordinary saves. Thanks to Shane who ran the lines. Thanks to the Sixteens who played up for us throughout the season – Zachery, Josh, Jacob G, Will, Harry, Connor and Kristian. And a big thanks to coach Joel for all the time and effort put in to the team. Well done to all.
Over 35s v St Pats lost 1 – 3
The over 35s made the trip to Melrose Park to face off against the much highly fancied St Pats on Sunday. Getting the boys to wriggle out of bed for a 8.30am kick off coupled with Father’s Day was met with sunglasses, coffee and a fair bit of mumbling from the old boys before the game! The game was officiated by one of our favourites and we had to provide club linesman which also add to the occasion but kick off came and it was on. Both teams were a little cautious at first but it soon started to mould into what we all new would be a very tough game, we had a couple of early half chances but St Pats was first to score after a fantastic cross was met with a good header to out us 1-0 down. Harrow who was in goals, must of wondered what he did wrong after a series of terrible back passes created a number of chances for St Pats. We continued to push on with huge work rates from everyone on the park but conceded again before half time and we were happy for the break. After the break the boys were a lot more focused and after a wonderful run from Irish he calmly slotted our first goal. At 2-1 down the game had turned, Spurs had a sniff and were chasing hard, we had shots blocked, shots saved and continued to build pressure when on a counter attack we conceded again. This lead to the last 5 minutes of us being frenetic and St Pats holding on. All of the boys can hold their heads high after this encounter, they had towelled us up in previous meetings but had to fight tooth and nail to get through this final. We can reflect on games that we should have won but didn’t. Now a few words of thanks, thanks again to Foxy, Wildy, Craig, Mick and Coatsy for being on the bench and my apologies again about your lack of game time. To Loz, thank you for being the manager this year, it takes a lot for you to do this and I appreciated all of your work, finally thank you to all of the players, unfortunately this year didn’t go to plan but we continue to try to be better, one cannot ask more of you than that.
Reserve Ladies v Diamonds lost 0 – 2
The ladies had a beautiful second half of the season, reaching 3rd on the ladder and giving them a spot in quarter finals.
The ladies put up a fight for a spot in the semi finals but to no prevail. The amazing teamwork and passing that had got them to the finals continued in this match, providing them with plenty of shots on goal. Unfortunately, however, the shots were unable to reach the back of the net. The Diamond forwards rarely were able to break through the defense, but on the few occasions they did they took advantage of such moments. This resulted in a 1-0 score before half time.
In the second half the spurs ladies did not give up and came close to levelling the score. The Diamond girls were forced to work hard for the win and despite their lack of possession of the ball managed to score once more, ending the season for the spurs ladies.
This season was also the last for two of our players. Snowy and Millie have decided to hang up their boots. Congratulations
