Presidents Report
On Sunday we hosted Albury United and although the Senior teams were slightly outgunned I believe our Junior teams took the points overall against one of our fiercest rivals.
Our Miniroos teams will finally take the field at Alexandra Park this Saturday. These kids are the future of our club and have been training eagerly for over a month in preparation.
Albury Hotspurs has the largest Miniroos contingent in Albury/Wodonga and is a credit to the hard work of our committee members and coaches who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this experience a great one for your children.
The Miniroos competition represents a great opportunity for parents to get involved in their children’s sport. We are still seeking game day coaches to help out on Saturdays. I can vouch that this is a very rewarding experience and you can really see the kids evolve each week and eventually progress through to the Sunday league competitions at U/12 level. Grass roots coaching courses are available so please contact Aidan Kilroy or Paul Kinning if you are keen to help out.
This week we host our cross border rivals Twin City. There should be quite a few close games amongst them and an opportunity for our youthful Senior team to get some points. Come and show your support.

Div.2 Men v United lost 1 – 3
Another week, another game against top opposition in United. Once again our start to the game was great and it is obvious that our passing and ball movement has improved greatly. Once again we went found the back of the net first, with Luke Hillas scoring his first goal for the club. We created quite a few more chances but had to call on debut keeper, Zac Bonetti to pull off a couple of magnificent saves in goal. The second half unfortunately didn’t go our way as United managed to get back into the game and eventually overrun us to win 3-1. Once again we were finely served by Alex B and Zac in midfield and Sam and Doug in defence. A special mention to Zac for stepping into goals and playing a very good debut game. The loss on the weekend has seen us slip to 8th on the ladder and we host 6th place Twin City this weekend.
Div.2 Women v United lost 0 – 2
It was a bit of a disrupted game for the ladies, with the game coinciding with a water polo semi-final which had a couple of Spurs players only able to turn up at half time. For the record, Christie won and is into the final while Anna was on the losing side. The team also lost Bella after 15 minutes as she was required to play in the 3rds men’s team. Throw in a hamstring strain early to young gun Grace, and you could be forgiven for thinking the team was up against it. However, the ladies played really well again, creating several chances and limiting the speedy United attack to limited chances. A couple of soft goals to United and the pesky crossbar kept the score 2-0, however overall Spurs played some nice passing style football and look a great team when moving the ball around the ground.
Thanks to Lily for Keeping in the first half and well done to young Keely Halloway who made a stellar debut for the team at the ripe old age of 13.
Over 35s v United lost 1 – 3
The 35s were banished to a welcoming Glen Park for our first encounter of the year verses our traditional rival Albury United. Very late in the transfer window we had the news that Damo Zlatan Harding had been approached from another club and his management were able to come to terms and we have seen him leave, thank you for your years of service, and your unselfishness in keeping the comp alive. Our starting line-up had us welcoming Brad Robertson in to the squad after a successful campaign in the Arabic nations, some would say a fitting replacement for Zlatan Harding, only time will tell. The ground was very lush and made the movement of the ball a little difficult but we seemed to adapt pretty quickly and played very good football. It was called after the team was announced, that the “left side of the team looks particularly strong this year” and it wasn’t long before we had T-Bone diving in the box, no foul, but some great sledging at everyone! We continued to press and were duly rewarded when Justin “Salah” Wild calmly slotted the first goal of the game. The surprisingly large crowd finally stopped abuse T-Bone and reflected on the greatness of Hotspurs own Salah, it was a truly moving moment seeing the all of the children on the sideline recreating the magical moment. Unfortunately we missed a few more chances and United were pressing for the first goal but were being denied by the greatness of Loz in the back line. New Manager Aido pressed the importance of finishing our chances at half time and in true 35’s fashion, this was totally ignored. Both teams came to play in the second half but it was United who broke through first with a fine finish in the top corner to level the scores, we kept pressing and missing and Irvine let himself down with a poor pass out of defence that lead to another goal being scored, again giving the keeper no chance. We then conceded a third and we still pushed but just could not get the ball down and in the net. The whole team played well but we need to learn to put our opportunities away and play with in our skill set, congratulations to Loz, Kel and Harrow on strong games. Thank you to Kel for arranging Steve Hayes to ref(thanks as well to Steve) and also to Boomers FC for allowing us to use their ground. We are currently 6th on the ladder but our job doesn’t get any easier when we host last year’s cup winner and current ladder leader Twin City this weekend.
Div.3 Men v United lost 0 – 9
Yes the score is not pretty but it is so very pleasing to see the commitment and support from the younger age group helping out and testing them selves up a year or two with NINE 15-16 year aged boys in the squad.
Thank you Harrison, Toby, Jack, Bailey, Zac, Harry, Dawson, Jay and Reese.
Report by Kelvin (16 Coach).
16 Boys v United won 4 – 0
Another good win, although it was a scrappy first half and United came close to scoring, including hitting the upright, so the result might have been much closer. The match see-sawed from one end of the field to the other as long clearances set off breakaways in the counter-attack but some good defence held the onslaught at bay, including some good saves by Harrison in goals. Only the second game into the season and the team is still finding its feet but showing good signs for the tougher matches ahead. Harry scored twice, making up for the disappointment of missing a penalty, with other goals to Zac and a penalty to Jack. Dawson made some good runs down the wing to get behind their defence. Keeping up the pressure proved decisive on several occasions and actually resulted in a goal.

Another great game from the Under 14 girls team! The girls started strongly and were creating many scoring chances up front. Our defence line was very solid as always and didn’t let anything through. Lil and Georgia kept a clean sheet in goals. Eloise and Alice were great from the under 12s and played very well. We welcomed Maddie into the team and she scored a great goal. The other goals were shared around with Hayley grabbing a double.
Thanks to Justin for running the line again.
Best of ground awards this week: very kindly organised and donated by Nancy at House of trends were Ruby and Maddie.
Keep up the great team work girls!
13 Boys v United won 9 – 3
The team bounced back from a difficult start to the season last week to put in a strong performance resulting in a terrific win for the U13 Boys against Albury United.
The score line probably doesn’t reflect how competitive and hard-fought the victory was. United never gave up and we had to stay alert and put in the hard yards all the way to the final whistle.
We had multiple goal scorers which was pleasing to see and got to get some good penalty taking practice in with 3 of our goals coming from penalties.
Our defence was once again where the victory was built from and it is pleasing to see some of the drills that are being practiced in training are seeing fruit on game day.
Our midfield was able to control the game for long periods and provide our strikers with excellent service, where we were able to break United’s defences on numerous occasions.
The composure on the ball and passing displayed by the players was very pleasing to see. As was the 100% effort put in by everyone.
A special thank you to the U12 boys and U12 and U13 girls who put their hands up each week to help us get a team on the park. Your help and dedication is greatly appreciated.
Well done to Darcy John who played a fantastic game on his debut for the club and his first ever competitive football match.
Goals: Alonso and Lenny x3 each, Trae Toumngeun x 2 and Elisha Wild x1
12 Boys v United won 10 – 0
After a real dour defensive game against Cobram the week before it was great to get a see Cooper break clear score after 20 seconds into the match.
It was a very dominant performance with all players enjoying space and keeping possession, which is exactly what our training has been directed toward.
Lenny set things up as usual from a defensive midfield position, and Zavier, Billy and Will and Isaiah were very creative when the ball went forward. All defensive positions held on in good shape, albeit with little to do.
It will be a much tougher assignment this week against Twin City.
Goals: Cooper x3, Billy x2, Isaiah, Will, Lenny, Dustin and OG x1
12 Girls v United won 9 – 0
An awesome start to the season from the defending League and Cup Champions (x2). The girls were on fire and totally dominated the game, creating plenty of chances and putting plenty of goals away. The team was mixed up a bit giving girls time in a variety of positions and they all did fantastic jobs no matter where they played.
Rylee and Alice picked up 2 goals each, while Zali had a great game and slotted a goal herself. Ava was in goal for the first Half, and came out and put 4 goals away in the second half. Elisha went into goals for the second half and made a couple of great saves. The new girls, Sofia and Lucinda both had strong games and showed they will fit into the team well.
This week we had 2 award winner for our newest sponsor, House of Trends Corowa. Ava took home $5 cash for her stint in goal and 4 goal haul, while Bianca also took home a $5 bonus due to her amazing game playing left back, where she wowed the crowd with some fancy footwork on several occasions.
