Presidents Report
With mixed results over the weekend, by far the greatest result was the U16 girls getting a team together and then coming out victorious 4-3.
Spurs boast a great wealth of female players in the club and they form a huge part of our plans for the future.
At our AGM we appointed our first Female Liaison Officer Carolyn Gillard, Carolyns important role is to be the first contact for all of our female players, address issues and attend local forums.
Another step forward was a decision at our last committee meeting that we pledge to enter a Division 1 Womens team in 2020 and all years thereafter.
With such a great female player base, it must be our priority that they get the opportunity to play at the highest level at our club.
Our current group of U/12 and U/14 girls are star studded with AWFA, Riverina and State representatives, they are also amongst the most successful teams the club has had in modern times both winning the League and Cups over the last couple of years. These great teams are the foundations and the reason why Division 1 is a must.
We are also fast tracking the next generation of female athletes, our Miniroos coordinators entered an all girls U/8 team this year, which appears to be a first since Miniroos commenced and another important step.
This year the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held in France in June. The Matildas are a live chance of going all the way and I believe we can drive female participation in the game and at our club off the back of their success.
This week most of our junior teams have been postponed due to the running of the Riverina Branch Championships in Griffith.
Good luck to our senior players who will be playing Wangaratta away on Sunday.

Div.2 Men v Twin City lost 1 – 3
It was always going to be a tough encounter against Twin City and they provided us with a football lesson in the first half on how to maintain structure and how to finish their opportunities. Thankfully in the second half we were able to get back out and play much improved football. Irish calmly slotted a well-deserved penalty but we just couldn’t find any more goals in open play. A big thanks to Harry Heath who played as long as he could after being ill all week, Bonners was again fantastic in goals and it was nice to have a fresh Aiden, Harry C and Toby to show us their ability when fresh. Well done to Nick and Manny on their games on the weekend, they were under pressure all day and easily had their best games for the year. After this 5-1 loss we have slipped to 9th on the ladder and we play Wangaratta who are the current competition leaders this weekend.
Div.2 Women v Twin City drew 1 – 1
We had a tough tussle against Twin City on the weekend and finished in a one all draw, without any Hotspurs player kicking a goal. We had many attempts on goal and hit the posts a few times. Grace has shown her ability to play up front with many runs to the goals. Natalie in defence, chased down the ball in style. Kendall, our amazing ninja goalie, did a fantastic job stopping Twin Cities numerous attempts at goals. We are playing well as a team and looking forward to being challenged by the dominant Wangaratta side.
Over 35s v Twin City lost 0 – 5
Report 1:
The return to Spurs Stadium for our first home game of the season didn’t really play out the way we would have hoped. We had the majority of our starting 11 out for this weekend but it was our lack of structure that really let us down. A demoralising 5-0 defeat will see us hopefully working harder on the track this week. Well done to Kel(until injured), Harrow(until injured) Doug and Loz on solid games and we welcomed Ben Boyd and Aaron “Cruyff” Grey-Block for their first game with the 35’s. We have slipped to 7th on the ladder and will have a very hard battle again this week with Wangaratta who are currently 5th.

Report 2:
A controversial team lineup announcement the previous night which left out the team’s leading goal scorer may have rattled the team psychologically (even though a late change put Wildinho back in the starting lineup) as the team conceded a couple of early goals.
And not much got better as the game went on, the team was outplayed all over the park and if it wasn’t for the great Bustinho in goals, the result could have looked a lot worse than the 5 nil it ended up. The team did unleash a couple of debutantes in Aaron and Ben who both showed some energy and passion, however we needed more than that against a very strong Twin City lineup. Harro was an early departure with an inflated groin, Kelvin also departed with a dicky calf, while Wildinho also had issues with his troublesome groin. There was no doubt the team put everything into the game, unfortunately they were just not good enough on the day. The road trip next week to Wangaratta does not get easier for the team, with their best player (Wildinho) unavailable as well as a couple of other squad members unable to make the journey. It may only be round 4, but players such as Platini and “The Other Brad” will have the chance to show their class in what is tipped to be match of the day such is the importance this game has in shaping the remainder of the season.

16 Girls v Twin City won 4 – 3
After a frantic few weeks of recruitment and player approvals, the U16 girls were ready to take the field for their first match. We were a motley crew of experienced U16 players, first gamers and U14 and U13 girls playing up. We took to the field with only 7 and our opponents graciously matched us. Nerves overtook us at the beginning and we let in an early goal. Our numbers swelled to 8 on the field as Emma appeared new shin pads and socks ready to go. There was some great talk on the field and our backline lead by Ciara managed to get the opposition caught offside a few times. We created chances up front but in the excitement of attacking we let another through on the counter. Near the end of the first half, we finally made our 9 players as Ruby flew on to the pitch, warmed up thoroughly after coming straight from basketball she injected some excitement into the team and before long we had got a goal back. Georgia made some incredible saves in goal and let everyone know exactly where they should be. We dropped another goal before the end of the half but came off feeling like we were still in with a shot. After an extremely inspirational team talk from their coach and a promise of lollies and half time fruit for the next game the girls went back after the break full of confidence. Georgia moved from goals to field and managed to net two goals in the second half. Just like that we were level, some jaw-dropping saves by Grace put a stop to any of Twin Cities chances in the second half. By this stage, Emma and Bailey were feeling confident in their first game of soccer and playing the ball to feet well. Mya and Elise were taking control of the wings and creating chances, while Bree stepped up giving guidance to other players and showing what a valuable asset she is in 16 girls. With everyone starting to connect as a team we slotted in one last goal to go up 4 – 3 and take the game! Well done Bailey and Emma for your first game and first win, a huge thank you to all those U14 girls who played up this week, we couldn’t have taken the field without you and well done to Grace, Ciara and Bree who leant some experience to the girls!

13 Boys v Twin City won 3 – 1
This was a terrific team effort from a team that had most of our Representative girls playing for AWFA in Melbourne. Ben McNay led the way with a cracking chip over the keeper in the first half, which again showed us a glimpse of the class he possesses. Captain Tyreece had the crowd worried in the first half, going down with a hamstring strain, which he miraculously recovered from with a 10 minute rest on the bench.
Lenny, Dustin and Cooper improved their work rates after pedestrian performances in the 12s, Cooper was rewarded with a goal to put us up 2-1, nearly taking the keepers head in the goal with the ball. No foul.
Elisha and Ruby had skilful high energy games, along with our new player Darcy who is showing a myriad of poise for a kid who has only played 3 games.
Ethan pulled off some amazing saves to help keep us in front. The story of the afternoon was Alonso Gibbons, he went down with a suspect knee injury and told the coach he was cooked for the afternoon, 5 minutes later decided to go back on , took on two or three defenders and blasted a worldie from range into top bins.
The healing power of this team is sight to behold.
Well done also to Charlie McKenzie who had his first taste of playing up an age group, he did a ripper job.
Thanks again to Gibbo for running the line.
Goals to Ben, Cooper, Alonso.
12 Boys v Twin City lost 0 – 2
The team were very flat today, second to the ball and didn’t fire a shot. A stark contrast to our percentage booster the week before and the over-confidence from that game is probably what led to the casual attack on the ball and marking of opponents. It’s good to get these games out of the road early in the season, and I reckon the team will take a lot from the game as far as knowing how they should prepare and play in future games. Special mention must go to the players that came up from Miniroos, Harry Howard and Rylee Steele from the 12 girls, both of them played well and showed the others about desire and persistence.
Week off this week, but I’m sure this group that won the League last year will work hard at training to turn around the mini form slump.
Special thanks to Alonso for stepping up and running the line.
