Presidents Report
What a ripper day it was at Spurs on Sunday for Female Football round.
The weather was forecast to rain, but like the vibe and the supporter turnout, the sun shone brightly.
It was a great celebration of the past, present and future of our club and would like to thank all involved on making it possible.
This week our focus will start with the first of our Miniroos Gala days at Jelbart park on Saturday. We have the largest Miniroos contingent in the association. Those of you looking for great afternoon of kids football and a carnival atmosphere the games commence at 12pm. Come and see us at the big Spurs marquee to find out where all the action is.
On Sunday we host St Pats in what is shaping as a great round of football to mark the half way point of the season.
A big weekend ahead for the club, get amongst it.

Coaching Course – C License course in Shepparton
Football Victoria are putting on a “regional” coaching course of “C” Licence in Shepparton during the July school holidays.
It was very difficult to get a course run in regional Victoria and so close to us here on the border. We need to take up this opportunity to ensure that future courses are held in our region.

Match Reports
Div.1 Men v Heart won 4 – 0
Finally a win!! Wasn’t our best performance of the season but good finishing and solid defence got the job done. Dylan Nabbe opened the scoring with a well placed finish then Zac Burhop converted with a Luke Dahl cross which was his first Senior goal. After halftime Ben Gardiner continued his good scoring form with another nice setup from Luke Dahl. Luke managed to get one of his own to make the final score 4-0. Good to see Nick Musarra back in Spurs colours after a few seasons away.
Div.2 Men v Heart won 3 – 0
It was great to see the Reserves get their second win of the season on Sunday. We had a lot of the ball and plenty of time, but struggled to impact on the scoreboard like we wanted to until an unlikely hero, Jon Cochrane, popped up and netted a hat trick! We would also like to thank Heathy, Kinno for the enthusiasm they showed playing a grade down and Joel filling in for Bonners who was injured. Also thank you to Brad Robertson from the 35’s for running the line. It was great to see the boys respond in the second half and to be able to give everyone some meaningful game time. This win still has us in 11th position and we come up against 8th placed St Pats this weekend.
Div.2 Women v Heart won 5 – 1
It was a great celebration of Female Football and our Female footballers on Sunday, and was great to see the Ladies run onto the field with our up and coming superstar miniroos girls. Not sure who liked it more, the ladies or the girls.
After a pre-game plea from the coach to make him happy by playing well and getting a win on such a special day, the ladies did their best from the opening kick. Some passages of play were a sight to behold, a passing game that looked like a mere training drill such was the composure on the ball. It didn’t take long for the goals to come. 5 different scorers on the day with Lily, Anna, Yas, Sam and Laura (mug winner) all picking up 1 goal each. Christie was strong in goals again getting off here line brilliantly to cut of several attacks. The coach was happy, the ladies were happy (the cake tastes better when you win) and the big crowd on hand was happy as they saw some quality football played by the ladies. A nice catchup at the Pub for dinner capped off a brilliant day for the Female leaders of the club.
Over 35s v Heart won 2 – 1
Firstly, the over 35’s would like to congratulate the club on the wonderful effort that they put in for the “Women in Football” round on the weekend, it was great to see all the smiles on the girls / ladies faces throughout the day. In relation to our game, we were returning to our first competitive game of football after a month off and the men were thrown into the deep end with playing on Aloysius as the opening game of the day! We spoke about needing to dictate how the game was going to be played on our terms but were met with an opposition that had improved greatly in their game play. It took a masterful piece of skill from the lesser known Italian Stallion Lozza to open up the scoring form midfield, a moment his young son won’t forget about soon because we are pretty sure Loz has recapped that goal to him every night before he has gone to bed! Unfortunately for us Heart equalised and we were up against it as they hit the crossbar another two times. Thankfully with a minute and a half to go Brad managed to find the back of the net with the final telling strike of the game. In the end, after a month off we will take that ugly win and keep moving forward. We would like to congratulate Arron on a really fine game in defence, Eddy for his enthusiasm when he hit the pitch and Gary for his uplifting gift at the end of the warm down. Also a big thank you to Brodie Davies for running the line and handling the pressure. I would also thank all of the members of the 35’s for running the duty team duties so well, it was great to see everyone pitching in at some stage. This win has us in 5th place and we take on the top team in St Pats this weekend.
Div.3 Men
16 Boys
16 Girls v Twin City drew 1 – 1
It was fitting for the opening of Female Football Week that both the teams were successful in this game. After beating Twin City earlier in the season the girls were optimistic for this game since they had a miracle for 16 girls, a bench! The game was close throughout the first half but TCW managed to get one past the girls towards the end of the half. Before the whistle went Grace persisted and got one past the keeper, with most of our players and the opposition unsure whether it had crossed the line or not, there was a bit of a scramble, Mya made sure the goal was ours by sending it to the back of the net and it was even stevens at half time. Although we had plenty of chances in the send half, Twin City did too, luckily our cross over superstar basketball player Ruby did not let any past her. Well done girls on a close game!
14 Boys
14 Girls v Heart won 9 – 1
Happy Female football week. A great game from the under 14 girls, as we have had two weeks off. We started well and created many scoring chances. The goals were all shared around. A huge thank you to our under 12 girls who help out week after week. We loved the opportunity playing on the main pitch and I’m sure you will see many of these girls play Senior Football in coming years. Another great team effort especially playing 9 v 9.
Awards to Hayley for her efforts in defence and to Ruby for her tireless efforts on and off the ball. Keep up the great work girls. Thanks Jay for running the lines.
13 Boys
12 Boys v Heart won 2 – 1
We went into this game a little undermanned, against the second top team.
Carl had been bed ridden all week, Lenny had been at State football nursing a quad injury, Will a late exclusion with a quad injury at rep training the day before, Dustin having a planned day off with mates. Our backs were against the wall before kick-off, and we had every reason to be excused from this one.
A plan was in place to play deep in defence, hound and harass the quicker opponents into less dangerous areas, not jump in at the ball, and maintain possession, not give them a chance to shoot. The plan paid off and we held on.
Sometimes the coach gets carried away with victories, and can be heard making ridiculous, outlandish over the top statements.
Perhaps this is one of those occasions, but nonetheless the coach is rumoured to believe this was one of the greatest victories in the history of time.
It will be echoed in the annals of history next to the Reds in Istanbul 2005 and the Reds v Barcelona 3 weeks ago.
Individual player heroics shall not be singled out as it was a superior team effort and will to win that got us across the line.
This lot have turned a corner today.
Goals: Cooper, Isaiah.
12 Girls v Diamonds drew 4 – 4
The girls knew it was going to be a tough game against Diamonds as this was the second time we had faced them and the earlier encounter was very tight.
With the girls looking good in their pink socks (Thanks Jason Kimball for donating) and their warpaint on their faces, the game started at a frantic pace. Diamonds came out hard while Spurs were a little slow to start. Diamonds had the better of the play for the first half but spurs managed to fight back and go to the break 2-2 thanks to 2 hard fought goals to Elisha. The second half was very similar however Spurs did start to work the ball around better, and scored 2 nice goals from Corners (1 to Elisha and 1 to Isla), however Diamonds refused to give up and the game ended 4-4. The team will need to lift intensity this weekend against the top of the table Wangaratta outfit who we always have tight battles with. Elisha (3 goals) grabbed a Burger award thanks to Urban Graze, Poppy and Isla picked up the $5 awards thanks to Nancy Compton and the House of Trends , Alice and Taylor also battled hard all day with Taylor volunteering to do a half in goals also.
