Presidents Report
We had some mixed results away at Myrtleford last week. Travelling to Myrtleford is always a tough outing and look forward to the corresponding fixture when we get to play them at home.
This Sunday is Mother’s Day, it’s always an important round to reflect on how important our Mothers and the women in our lives are. Without them we wouldn’t be around let alone have functioning sporting clubs.
This round also coincides with the Luders-Laramee Foundation Cup, where we are hosting Melrose FC.
The Cup honours Bill Luders (first President of Hotspurs) and Hans Laramee (founding father of Melrose FC). Both these men were integral in forming the Albury Wodonga Football (Soccer) Association in 1973.
These men started junior soccer in this region and Hotspurs and Melrose clubs are founding clubs in the local association.
It should be a great day for all, with many past and present players and supporters heading to the ground, hopefully our Senior Men can reclaim the Cup for Spurs and make it an extra special Mother’s Day.

Match Reports
Div.1 Men v Myrtleford lost 0 – 3
It was always going to be a tough task against the defending League and Cup Champions. On Myrtleford’s home turf the boys performed bravely especially on the defensive front. Everyone put in 100% effort and can’t be faulted for their performance. Just beaten by a better team on the day. Special mention to Goalkeeper Joel McDonough who had a nightmare at the same venue last season, bounced back with a penalty save and several brilliant saves there after. We put in that same effort this Sunday, the Foundation Cup is coming back to Hotspurs
Div.2 Men v Myrtleford lost 4 – 6
The crowd was treated to an absolute goal fest at Savoy Park on Sunday, some were poor, and some were good but the overall result saw us drop points. We are just struggling to gel as a team at the moment but we do see passages of play that show us that we can play good football when we are switched on. Well done to Dylan Nabbe for bagging a well-deserved hat trick, Zac Fordham for working hard and getting a goal and to Brendan O’Neill for marshalling the troops at every opportunity. This loss sees us in 11th position with a game against 9th place Melrose this weekend.
Div.2 Women
Over 35s
Div.3 Men
16 Boys v Wangaratta drew 3 – 3
Wasn’t looking great with two unavailable, players arriving late and without a keeper until 2 minutes to kick-off but when the whistle went we clicked into action with a great first half team performance. Defensively we were much improved and when going forward we were decisive and converted 4 attempts into 3 first half goals.
Second half and Wang came out with more aggression and determination. We held strong for 15 minutes but Wang eventually got their goal. After that we lost our shape and a bit of confidence and Wang lifted and scored another two to make it 3 – 3.
Both teams had their chance to win the match and we thought we had it when Kristian spotted the keeper off his line and launched a shot from inside our own half which sailed over the keeper but just wide.
Much improved game from last few weeks and now on to Myrtleford tomorrow.
16 Boys v Myrtleford lost 3 – 4
I can not believe we squandered another 3 – 0 lead at half time and this time lost the game. I guess I will have to take responsibility as coach. I still can not believe a few substitutions would drastically change the game completely in such a negative way. Having said that, we still created enough chances to win this game.
On the positives, we know we can be a good defensive team and an exciting and dynamic attacking team. We just need to do this for the full 70 minutes.

14 Girls v Wangaratta won 2 – 1
With only 9 girls the spurs girls took to the field and battled. Wang scored 1st but then spurs passed the ball around and created many scoring chances with only 9 players. We went into the half at 1 all and then we scored with 5 minutes to go. A fantastic game from all the girls awards to: Elisha who had played 4 games and was injured but tool to the field (Muffin Break), Daisy who lead from the back and guided the girls (House of trends)
Ava who played goals 2nd half and was courageous (Urban graze) and Sienna who stepped up and had a cracker in defence (Hungry Jacks). A massive thank you the Under 12s who helped out over the weekend. Thanks Ava for running the line.
14 Girls v Myrtleford won 10 – 1
Our second game of the weekend and we were definitely out sized by the other team but we passed the ball around and created many scoring chances. It was a fantastic team effort and it certainly is a pleasure to watch the future of spurs football. Mya opened the scoring and Ruby scored 3, Daisy scored a couple a crackers from distance and Rylee from under 12 played her first Under 14 game and dominated up front.
Awards to: Georgia for running the wing(House of trends) Rylee (Urban Graze) and Lil for always leading the girls and playing goals for a half(Muffin break). Keep uo the great team work girls.
13 Boys v Wangaratta lost 1 – 5
It was a hard day at the office for the U13’s today who came up against a very strong Wangaratta side boasting a number of representative players. It was a 5-1 loss but would have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for the amazing goal keeping display by Ethan. Ethan put in a man of the match performance (which is hard to do in a 5-1 loss) with even Wangaratta players and supporters all commenting on his amazing goalkeeping abilities. It was like watching Peter Schmeichel in his heyday (for those old enough to have watched Manchester United in the 1990’s).
Our team pushed them all the way though and never gave up. We made Wangaratta work hard and earn their victory. Special mention to our brave and courageous defenders who were under the pump all match and put their bodies on the line to stop the wave of attacks coming from Wangaratta. I was very proud of the effort put in by all the players and could not have asked for any more. In addition to Ethan, other standout performances by Tyreece, Paras, Daisy, Sam and Isaiah.

13 Boys v Myrtleford lost 0 – 4
Another tough day at the office for the U13’s. We had to be at our best today in order to compete against a very good team, and unfortunately we weren’t able to produce our best today. A few critical calls went against us and we were missing some key players, but no excuses – Myrtleford were the better team today. It seemed to take us the first half to warm up and get our act together, and by them we were already a couple of goals down. The second half was a little better (after I put away the oranges and fed them all snakes at half time to get a sugar rush going !!) but we just didn’t seem to gel as a cohesive unit today. To our credit we kept trying right to the final whistle and never gave up. We made our opponents work hard for their victory. Ethan as always was superb in goals and had a very busy time again today. Special mention also to our courageous defenders who were under the pump most of the match and worked hard all day to shut down the attacks coming from the opposition. Other notable performances were Sam who did a terrific job in defence, Daisy who put in another fine performance in midfield and Ruby who was a constant threat up front.
12 Boys v Wangaratta lost 2 – 3
This was a very tight match with nothing much between the two teams. The match was tough but fair and played with good spirit.
All players put in 100% effort and competed to the very end. Our defence was strong, with Wangaratta having to rely on long range shots in order to get onto the scoreboard. Cooper scored a cracking first goal which almost broke the net in the first half and then scored a deflected goal in the second half which looked like forcing a draw until Wangaratta scrambled a late winner. Standout out performances from Dustin, Cooper, Carl and Elisha but the whole team should be congratulated for their effort and determination. We will try to get our revenge in their return visit to Aloysius Park later in the year.
Goal Scorer: Cooper Howard X 2
12 Boys v Myrtleford won 4 – 0
Really good result for the team today and got reward for their hard work.
We had a 4-0 win and had 4 different goal scorers, which is pleasing to see.
Our defence was strong, holding off a number of threatening opposition attacks, which meant Ethan had a relatively quiet time in goals. The midfield took control of the game in the second half and provided good service to our strikers. Lenny took full advantage of his time in midfield in the second half and was able to impose himself more on the game and dominate possession. Our strikers were clinical up front and took their chances when they presented themselves. Overall a very pleasing victory from a hard working team. Other notable performances from Carl who did a terrific job in defence while Lenny had a run in midfield, Dustin who just never stops running and always gives 110% and Murray who put in a fine performance in defence for us today and never stopped trying.

12 Girls v Myrtleford won 8 – 0
A great game and team effort from all the girls, against a side they haven’t played before.
The Spurs dominated possession and managed to keep the ball and the opposition in the attacking half with a solid defensive effort from Zali, Eloise, Lucy and Taylor. Some first half highlights were the decisive runs through the midfield by Rylee and Seanna, and Alice’s trademark runs down the wing and crosses to goal. There were plenty of chances to score in the first half, with Isla, Mia and Seanna all having great shots which either narrowly missed, or were saved. The dominant possession in attack did lead to some great first half goals to Rylee (after weaving though 3 defenders), Poppy, Rylee again, and Alice.
In the second half, Coach Wild moved the team around to some unfamiliar positions, and the girls responded well. Chelsea, Taylor, Bianca and Sophia all looked menacing in attack with some great shots on goal. Rylee ended up scoring her third goal (another great strike), Ava scored two awesome goals after some decisive runs, and Eloise scored a cracker from just outside the box.
Special mention to Ava and Alice for being goalie (clean sheet again), with awards to Sophia and Lucinda for their efforts.
Well done Spurs.
