Presidents Report
Last week we were dominant across the board, but desperately unlucky in our Reserve and Senior grade men’s.
We all but reclaimed the Luders-Laramee Foundation Cup but couldn’t quite hold on for the 90 minutes. Next year its coming home.
I reckon we have seen a vast improvement in our Seniors, it’s only a matter of time till they string a couple of games together.
It was great to have the founders of Hotspurs and AWFA Bill Luders and his wife June come to Aloysius Park for the Cup on Sunday. There were many tales of the clubs great history, the initial struggles, the underdog victories and the many characters that graced the turf over the years. Thanks Bill and June for making the day pretty special.
At our next home game we will host Wodonga Heart on the 26th May.
This will be our Female Football Round. All of our female games will be played on the main Aloysius pitch and it’s a dedicated day to celebrate all our female athletes of past and present.
We invite all past players to come and enjoy the festivities. Spurs have the most female competitors from Miniroos all the way up to our Division 2 Ladies teams. This is something that we should embrace. More information to follow in next weeks newsletter.
This week we are away at Boomers, best of luck to all our players.

Match Reports
Div.1 Men v Melrose lost 2 – 3
It was Laramee-Luders Cup time and we were looking to regain the trophy on our home turf. With our founding father watching from the sidelines it was an even first half and remained 0-0 thanks to Joel McDonough saving a penalty for the 2nd week running. The goals started to flow in the second half with Ben Gardiner opened the scoring from nice build up play by Luke Dahl. Melrose responded with a goal of their own but we hit back with a well placed finish from Jon Cochrane. We struggled to maintain our lead and conceded shortly after we scored. Towards the end both teams were looking for a winner each creating their own fair amount of chances. In the last minute of the game, Melrose managed to break down the right hand side and scored in what ended up being the winning goal. Another frustrating day in which a result slipped through our fingers once again.
Mini Spurs Mascots ready to walk out with Div.1 Men
Div.2 Men v Melrose lost 3 – 4
Unfortunately it was another goal fest that didn’t go our way on the weekend, we came in 2-0 down and agreed for the 3rd week in a row that we had played a terrible first half. Once again we came out in the second half with a bit more fire and were able to make a great contest out of it. In a positive we won the second half 3-2 but we need to work on our first half efforts and conceding easy goals. There are glimpses each week of how well we can all play, we just need to have longer, more dominant efforts. Thank you to the bench players of Blake, Luke, Aiden and Scotty for their efforts on the weekend and their attitude towards their little amount of game time that they had. We would also like to thank the Luder’s family for coming to watch us. The loss on the weekend still has us in 11th position and we are off to play 5th place Boomers this week.
Div.2 Women
Over 35s v Spurs 16 Boys won 3 – 0
Div.3 Men
Some will say that there was a line drawn in the sand very early in the week on this game, the young bucks verses the artful dodgers, would pace and fitness out do brains and ball movement, who would get bragging rights? The 35’s were buoyed by the field inclusions of Butsy and Aido in the engine room, a sight that hadn’t been seen but was it going to be one to behold? Was the inclusion of the Pizza Man in goals going to back fire with having the evergreen goal scoring machine Wildihno in the back as well supporting an untested Mick Carroll who was back from injury? Could Phantom Ben play within himself before the Liverpool game and link up with Aaron Cruyff, Brodes and Foxy to build a formidable attack? Would Loz and Scotty be able to hold structure and not run around like mad chickens? The simple answer is it was a great 70 minutes of fun for both sides, the old boys through the goal scoring prowess of our own Benjamin Button Coatsy came out on top but the 16’s had plenty of chances and probably just needed to play more as a team. Thank you to Kristian and Craig for officiating and also to Kelvin for coming up with the idea. We hope that the young boys can take something from the game and thank you to all of the supporters who turned up as well.
16 Boys v Spurs Over 35s lost 0 – 3
See Over 35s report above.
Hopefully a rematch or two can be arranged for later in the year and the 16s can show that their mental and put one over the old boys next time.
16 Girls v Melrose won 3 – 1
With both 14 Girls and Reserve Ladies having a bye on the weekend, 16 Girls were able to field a full side with the luxury of a bench. The girls were up early on Sunday as they took to the field for only their 3rd game of the season. We had previously met Melrose in less than ideal conditions and gone down 1 – 0 so we knew it was going to be a close game. The game was going back and forth in the first half with both teams having their chances. Emma & Bree were persistent on the left wing but just couldn’t get it in. Ciara Dahl was superb in goals making some great saves. We finally broke through just before half time after Bailee took a tumble just outside the box. Daisy stepped up to take the kick and scored with ease. The half ended 1 – 0 in our favour. Feeling confident we tried a few new positions and went into the next half feeling positive. The game stayed close but after some nice play between Lily & Ruby we went up another goal. Melrose made us work for it and towards the end of the game they got one past us, within seconds we tipped the scoreline back to a 2 goal lead with another goal from Lily. It was great to have Keely back from injury and Hayley play her first game for 16s this year too. Thank you to all those 14 Girls (and their parents) who help us out each week. Well done girls!

13 Boys v Melrose won 10 – 2
The team started off fast and iced the game early. With the late striker withdrawal of Ben through sickness, Keely saw her name in the 9 position and laughed. “You know I play in the back half Brad” she said.
10 minutes later she had a hat-trick.
We shared to the positions around this week, giving our defenders Paras, Tyreece, Sam, Lenny and Dustin all a chance to attack. They all did a great job, Dustin scored, Sam unfortunately missed a chance from the penalty spot, and told the coach he wants to stay down back.
Cooper was so excited about his old man putting him at left back in the second half, he ventured forward to get his hat-trick.
Alonso also put on a brace and Lenny got that goal he was after from a corner.
Next week we play a far better side, who will be seeking revenge from our finals campaign last year.
I reckon the upset victory will be on again.
Goals: Keely x3, Cooper x3, Alonso x2, Dustin x1, Lenny x1
12 Boys v Melrose won 1 – 0
The game started in a flurry, and we missed two of the easiest goals imaginable. Cooper running into a seemingly open goal but selecting to go through the keeper rather than around him. The keeper parried it out for a corner and from which Josh somehow flicked it over the crossbar from point blank. With all this attacking it was only a matter of time until we scored surely.
Not in the first half anyway. Second half started the same way, dominating attack after attack, and eventually Josh slotted one from close range after many shots, many rebounds and many misses.
These things can be corrected; it was just one of those days. Perhaps a 5 or 6 nil result would’ve been a fairer reflection.
The most impressive effort today was the way our defensive plan held on. We knew they had faster players in attack , but held out nerve and played a little deeper than usual. That was impressive. Under Lennys experienced organisation, Sam, Murray, Nick and John really executed the plan. Well done guys.
Josh, Billy and Will were very consistent with their efforts, one day all those shots you missed today will go in. Zavier has also learned to use a little aggression and follow up with his second efforts.
Although it was only 1-0 I reckon that was the one game that could turn the season around.
Goal: Josh x1
