Presidents Report
On Saturday we had our first Miniroos Gala day for 2019 at Jelbart Park.
There were over 1000 Miniroos competitors from Albury/Wodonga and surrounding districts and I’m proud to say Hotspurs had one of the largest contingents. A cracking day was had by all, I’m sure all competitors were tired and slept well.
Well done to Aidan, Paul, Wayne, Dwayne and all the coaches and team managers, without your huge efforts these days just don’t happen.
On Sunday, and after some early morning brilliance from the six time Champions of Europe (i.e Liverpool. YNWA), we hosted St Pats and had some great results across the board. Our Senior Men and Div 2 ladies both getting full points in some terrific games of football.
The crowd were particularly buoyed during the Seniors, their new portable grandstand arrived on the Hill and paid for itself with excitement with Spurs getting up 4-0. Well done to Dwayne Day for sourcing this fantastic addition. And a special thanks to Lukey and Benny for acknowledging the hill with their goal celebrations.
This week is a general bye for the competition. The Vic Country Championships will be held at Jelbart and Alexandra Parks over Sat-Sun-Monday. Hotspurs have many AWFA representative players, if you have time, slip past one of these grounds and offer your support.
Good luck to all involved.
Grant Announcement
We are pleased to announce that on Wednesday we secured a $4,804 community grant from the Bendigo Bank.
This grant was achieved by the tireless efforts of Aidan Kilroy and will go towards helping us create a Hotspurs “All Abilities” team in the near future. More information to come in regard to this team, thanks again Aidan, fine work.

Match Reports
Div.1 Men v St Pats won 4 – 0
Another four goals, another clean sheet, another win. The Seniors head into the long weekend with a bit of momentum with two straight wins. Collectively each player did their part. The back five was again very solid limiting the opposition to only a few chances. Two goals each to Luke Dahl and Ben Gardiner continued their good scoring form over the last month. Let’s see if we can improve more as a team come second half of the season.
Div.2 Men v St Pats lost 3 – 4
Another game and another goal fest for the fans of football, but unfortunately not going our way again! Jacob Schreiber had a massive game in the centre of the park and was well supported by Zac Fordam and Kristian running stints in midfield and it was nice to see Sam back and playing. Alex Brouwer worked himself hard upfront and had a couple of late chances to finish off a pulsating game but we just couldn’t do it this week. The boys all felt disappointed with that loss but the attitude and work rate really kicked up on the weekend and hopefully we can show that improvement in the second half of the season. Thank you to Loz and Joel for running the line and well done to Dave Stewart for scoring his first goal for the club, what a screamer and celebration! Unfortunately this loss still sees us in still in 11th and with a trip to Jelbart Park to take on 6th place Albury United after the break.
Div.2 Women v St Pats won 2 – 1
This was a really tough game for the Ladies against a very committed St Pats team. It was an even contest with very limited chances in the first half. Spurs had the better of field position for most of the game and a long range goal from no-where put St Spats ahead early in the second half. However the Spurs Ladies lifted and Lily who had just come back on after a short rest on the bench, slotted a nice goal after beating the backs for speed. Not long after Lily again found some space and calmly put a goal over the head of the advancing keeper to give the Spurs what would be the match winning lead. A few nervous moments at the end but the team goes to the mid-season break sitting 5th on ladder and poised to make a charge for the top 4 in the second half of the season. New signing Formosa had a cracking game, as did Kelly in defence and Anna was awesome in the midfield.
Over 35s v St Pats lost 1 – 3
The main pitched beckoned for the 35’s against the current ladder leaders on Sunday morning. The management committee had quite a few headaches with unavailable players and injuries to contest with, and also all of the idiot Liverpool supporters in our squad with red eyes and beaming smiles but we were able to put a very strong side on the park. These games with St Pats usually go one of two ways, either them giving us a whipping or a pulsating encounter with a fair bit of emotion thrown in, thankfully it was the second option on Sunday. Yet again we had a new centre mid / forward pairing and a new centre back pairing as well which took a little while to gel but worked really effectively. As Aido said, this was some of our best football for the year for the majority of the game with little patches of ordinary but a great team performance. It is always hard to single out individuals but Loz, Harrow, Whitedog and Mickett toiled well all day. I would also like to express my gratitude to the lads who didn’t get much game time who were on the bench and especially to Ben Boyd for taking one for the team and sitting out and to Kelvin for the same but also running the line, we are truly grateful for your unselfish acts. This loss leaves us in 6th position as we have the break but then take on 3rd placed United in what will be another great encounter.
Div.3 Men
16 Boys v St Pats lost 0 – 3
A good team effort and if we had taken one or two of our chances in the first half we may have been able to rock their confidence a little and then who knows.
At the halfway point of the season, we sit 5th on the ladder which could have been a lot better having let some great opportunities to win games go.
Let’s all learn from the first half of the season and see if we can do better and improve in the second half and the run into the finals.

16 Girls v St Pats won 3 – 2
The 16 Girls finished off Female Football Week with a win and now sit 3rd on the ladder after their great game on Sunday. Elise took her turn in goals this week and after a few nervous kick outs started to feel comfortable and make some good saves. She was performing so well in goals she stayed there for the second half. Well done to all the 16 Girls who are sharing the goalkeeping around every game. This was a tough game against some tall opponents. Georgia did a great job in the centre holding up St Pat’s attack while Daisy went box to box for the entire game. Lily used her speed to get two goals on some quality through balls and one from Grace in the second half where she outclassed the defenders easily. Awards this week to Elise, Lily & Bailee, who is starting to look formidable in defense as all the new skills come together. Well done girls keep it up!

13 Boys v St Pats lost 1 – 2
This was a cracking game against the side that seems to be our arch rivals over the last couple of seasons.
For the majority of the game we managed to hold out their midfield and had many scoring opportunities ourselves.
We found ourselves 1-0 down at the break, one or two unmarked opposition players got one through Ethans defences.
In the second half we switched on, which seems to be our method all season.
Alonso cracked yet another worldie from a set piece, probably his best all year.
Keely and Ben were terrific up front but couldn’t find the net, again finding the keepers chest.
Cooper went down with an ankle injury and will be on the pine for 6 weeks.
We outplayed St Pats for the majority of this contest. However the week off and no training may have left us a little rusty,
with just a couple of basic defensive errors and opposition forwards unmarked probably cost us in the end.
Goal: Alonso
Awards: Alonso, Ben.
12 Boys v St Pats won 2 – 0
On a cold dewy morning the coach was particularly happy with the start to the day. Liverpool were crowned the Champions of Europe. You could tell the team were happy with this result also, particularly Ethan, Will and Josh. Inspired by the Champions League heroics of Mo Salah and Divock Origi we put on our two goals early in the first half through Isaiah and Cooper.
We welcomed back Charlie after some time in recovery with a toe injury. It was great to have him back, giving us more opportunity to throw Lenny into the midfield and move other around the park.
Will was given the captaincy today and although his tiny arms couldn’t cope with the armband, he lead from the front with some dazzling footwork through the middle. Billy was very tenacious upfront and he was presented with numerous opportunities to score.
We had the ball for the majority of the game but seemed to pick out the St Pats keeper on the chest rather than kicking the ball to the more spacious nettier parts of the goal. If we did, we win 10-0
The score reflected Liverpools Champions League final victory, which was splendid.
Goals: Isaiah, Cooper
Awards: Will, Billy
12 Girls v Wangaratta won 4 – 2
With the Team down on numbers for the top of the table clash, Coach Wild made some tactical changes to team formation – bolstering the defence and providing focus in attack.
The changes worked.
The girls responded with their best game of the year (so far), dominating the determined Wangaratta outfit. All the Spurs were tenacious, and fought hard for the ball across the park.
Alice shone up front with some signature runs and crosses, ably supported by Rylee. Isla, Mia and Sophia stepped up in the midfield. Seanna, Eloise and Zali were resilient in defence, and all were encouraged from a supportive Ava in goals.
A brace of goals for Rylee, and a goal to Alice and Mia meant the full time score was 4-2 against a fast finishing Wangaratta side.
There were numerous match highlights, but two deserve a special mention as they are contenders for goal and save of the year.
Mia – A volley in front of goal from a pin point Alice cross. Absolute cracker!
Ava – Pushed a well-timed Wangaratta shot from close range into the cross-bar and regathered. Wow.
Big thanks to Ava for being in goals for the whole match, and as always doing an outstanding job. Special mention and awards go to Alice, Ava, Eloise and Seanna for their impressive contributions during the match.
Congratulations to Spurs U12 girls on making the riverina team to play in state titles.
