Presidents Report
It was great to get back to normality after the long weekend bye. Many of our Hotspurs stars did a fine job as AWFA representatives in their respective age groups, this is something the club holds in high regard and proves we have a strong future to look forward to.
On Sunday our Hotspurs teams played at our arch rival United’s ground Jelbart Park.
Most of our junior teams had decisive victories however spirited performances in the Senior divisions weren’t quite enough to get us across the line. The Senior Men’s game was a bitter tussle to the end, and unfortunately out young side couldn’t quite get across the line but made many fans happy with their tough efforts.
You will see our Trivia night advertised in the newsletter. This has always been a great social evening on the Spurs calendar, and no matter what your trivia knowledge it’s great to get a group of friends together for a night out. Get amongst it.
This Sunday we host Wangaratta in our 3rd last home game of the year. It also marks the commencement of our All Abilities team, this is a great initiative and an exciting time for many that we can all embrace for the future.
See you all there.

Match Reports
Div.1 Men v United lost 1 – 2
That was a tough one to take. Our best performance against a top 6 side by far this season. Coming from a goal down and then playing against 10 men we managed to claw one back through Nick Musarra. We pushed for the winner but we were cruelly dealt a blow 5 mins from the end when a United shot deflected into the back of the net to give them the win. Zac Bonetti was outstanding in his 1st Senior start in goals.
Div.2 Men v United lost 1 – 2
Another week and another narrow loss, but this week had a marked improvement in the effort applied over the whole park. John Belgre was in charge from the sidelines and stressed the importance of a team impact and team work rate, which the team did. In a rare occurrence the team had all of the senior coaches involved in this game with JB calling the shots and Townie doing a mountain of work in the midfield and John I in goals (regretting Joel’s send of even more). Alex finished off our only goal of the day but we just cannot apply enough scoring pressure and a couple of defensive lapses cost us goals. We improved on last time we played United (3-1 loss) and for the second half of the season that is what we want, improvement on previous results. The loss keeps us in 11th position with our next game against the ladder leaders.
Div.2 Women
Over 35s v United lost 1 – 3
United have seen the light and followed our new presidents lead and held the spectacle of the 35’s on the main pitch at United. Parking was at a premium for the showcase event and the referee even held up the kick off so that United could take full advantage of the ticket sales and get everyone into the ground. We had rested a few of our impact players for this game and sent Butsy back to the Magoo’s to find some form after some lacklustre performances. Spurs could see this was a tense game for United when they looked over to the bench to see a former rogue spur wrapped up in carpet off cuts waiting for his opportunity and impersonator of our own Dwayne Day chewing at the bit to have a run. As always this was a typical United v Spurs game with plenty of love and emotion and some decisions leaving us all shaking our heads. Unfortunately the carpet baron came on and scored with a well-placed header in the top corner to have United lead 1-0 at the break. The second half saw us come out again and continue to use our strong left side with both Gaz and Wildy constantly threatening with quality passes but United ended up catching us on the counter with a well-placed chip leaving our resident pizza man looking like he was tossing pizzas stranded and they went 2-0 up. Kel, Brad, Mickett and T-Bone were constantly threating with shots when T-Bone was dubiously adjudged to have been fouled and Mickett stepped up to convert the penalty and dodge the pink bib. 2-1 game on and the doppelganger was having a few choice words when he went down after a terrible challenge from the man in blue. We were pushing for the equaliser when the game changed in a moment when the world coach of the year / interstellar coach of the millennium hit what could only be described as the rasping shot, a keeper stranded if you will, into the net! The problem was it was our own net. Well battled all day lads, thanks to Edwardo and Mick Carrol for sitting out this week and Coatsy for sitting out and running the line, we really appreciate your efforts. Well done to Wildy on the bib. We have slipped to 7th on the ladder and take on 5th placed Wang this week.
Div.3 Men
16 Boys v United drew 2 – 2
It was a cold drizzling morning at Jelbart Park and the team was looking very flat in the warm-up so the coach got in to them to fire up and start moving after they finish ten push-ups!
This did the trick and the team came alive.
We started explosively. Winning tackles, beating players with skill, speed and precise passing of the ball.
We were carving them up down both wings and many crosses and corners were delivered into dangerous areas.
For all our great team play we were unable to convert the many chances we created.
We have to give credit to a determined United team, their defensive effort and their goalkeeper who made many good saves. They also converted their chances when they arrived.
Not the result we wanted or deserved but still it was a very good team performance from us.
16 Girls
14 Boys
14 Girls v United lost 0 – 1
A game that could of gone either way, after a few weeks off for the girls. The girls created many scoring chances but just couldn’t find the back of the net. This was the girls first loss of the season against a United side who wanted the ball and were physical against us. We have a few tough games ahead but know the girls will battle back. Awards to defenders- Alex(urban Graze), Eloise(House of trends), Hayley(Urban Graze) who wereawesome and played really well together. Ruby also had a great game and took the Hungry Jacks award.
Keep up the great team work girls as we battle Wangaratta next week.
13 Boys v United won 5 – 1
The 13s started a little rusty today, and perhaps a few players tried to take too many touches rather than putting the basic simple pass through like we do in our better games. Once we iced the game, which took a lot longer than expected, we were able to move a few people into different positions. This allowed Sam to go forward where he volleyed an awesome goal. Many other chances were had but we couldn’t capitalise. Cooper kicked a couple, one of which he failed to sense of the occasion and stole off Ethan who again played out of goals with a nice lead up role in midfield. Paras played one of his better games today, he listened to the coaches advice and adjusted himself accordingly, well done Paras. Ruby was captain today and got an award for her fine efforts. Big game against Wang next weekend, I reckon we are in with a big chance at home.
Awards: Paras, Ruby
Goals: Cooper x2, Elisha, Alonso, Sam
12 Boys v United won 10 – 0
With a week off and a wash-out training session it was good to hit the ground running in this game.
Dustin got us off to a fine start getting a hat trick in about 10 minutes. Zavier has shown a great improvement and aggression up front scoring two ripper goals which bodes well for the rest of the season. Charlie powered one home in the second half, celebrating his first goal in 3 and a half years, hopefully many more to come Charlie and welcome back.
Josh captained the team today, and after a fine week in U/11 reps last week has shown he can really take the next step forward.
Ethan played his first game out of goals for a few years, he showed great skill and poise in defence and could find himself there more often in the future. Sam and Harry shared the keeping, and neither got a touch.
Hopefully we can get on the pitch for training this week, Wangaratta have shown us they are a tough opponent.
Awards: Ethan, Dustin
Goals: Dustin x4, Zavier x2, Charlie, Lenny, Billy, Carl
12 Girls v United won 14 – 2
The pre-game pep talk from Coach Wild must have inspiring because the girls came put on a masterclass in the first half with ten goals. The girls dominated all over the park and gave the opposition nothing. Alice scored the first goal, Ava (not in goals for the 1st half) booted 6 goals and Rylee 3 goals and the score was 10-1 into the half time break.
Coach Wild made some formation changes in the second half, playing the girls in some unfamiliar positions. All the girls responded to the challenge and continued to dominate possession with another great half. Seanna relished her opportunity in attack and scored 4 awesome goals.
A great game and display of sportsmanship girls (not celebrating too much!!)
Big thanks to Eloise and Ava for being in goals and doing an outstanding job.
Special mention and awards go to Ava, Bianca, Isla, Rylee and Seanna for their impressive contributions during the match.
