Presidents Report
What a marvelous week it has been for the Albury Hotspurs Soccer Club.
It started with two of our amazing club persons recognised at the AWFA presentation.
Fiona Smith was awarded the AWFA Coach of the Year for her amazing efforts at Club, Representative and School level over a very long period.
Lily Godfrey was awarded the Frank Bertazzo Junior Player of the year award for her exploits over 4-5 grades at club level and also the U/14 and U16 girls at rep level. Congratulations to the both of you, well deserved.
On Sunday we capped off a brilliant season with 3 out of our 4 female teams winning their cup finals.
Our Division 2 Ladies were missing some stars but geez they did a great job. They never gave up and we can see how many of them are going to make astrong side in the Division 1 Ladies comp next year. Congrats to Christie Ward also for her amazing heroics in goal deserving the ward for player of the match.
It is such a great achievement with the 12s winning the League and Cup double for the third time in a row, and the 14s winning back to back League and Cups.
What I found the most remarkable story on Sunday was our U/16 girls. Most of these players came straight back on the ground after an extra time/penalty shoot-out in the U/14s, and guttsed out another game going to and extra time penalty shootout. It’s a small miracle when we consider that we only have 4 true U/16 girls, and at the start of the season considered the future of the team. It’s a testament to the hard work of all those involved that we were able to field a team all season and to cap it off with a Cup victory is something to behold. Great job to Justin, Fiona and Nat on your teams successes.
Also a big congratulations to our All Abilities team who debuted on the big stage against Cobram and Wangaratta. Well done to Aiden, Loz, Harry and Diahann and the team for making it a huge success this year.
It was another great night down at our major sponsors Bradys Hotel to celebrate, rumour has it that one of the best renditions of the Spurs song was chanted by an unnamed individual on the deck.
A special thanks to all the coaches and managers of all grades this season, you are unsung heroes of the club.
Grand Final catering
We have received very positive feedback from AWFA about our service on Grand Final day and you all should be commended on your efforts. Thanks to all those that volunteered their time. Great efforts from Dwayne Day and Phil Barrett who tirelessly assisted with the preparations and worked incredibly towards the day over the last few months.
Just a heads up that some of the proceeds we received will be going towards upgrading some equipment and storage for next season. The rest will be pooled to support our fundraising efforts for new Spurs change rooms and facilities.
I wish you all the best in the offseason, please stay tuned for coaching appointments and other important information.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.
It’s been a real pleasure this year, onwards and upwards for many more years ahead.

All Abilities – Grand Final Day
What an exciting few months we have had with our All Abilities team. At the start of the season we as a club decided to look into the concept of starting an all abilities team. 4 months later and a generous start up grant from Albury Wodonga Connected Communities we had our first training session. We had 12 players show up to our first session which went really well. We are sure we have unearthed some future stars!
We had a total of 4 sessions which included a match against Albury United. Our season finished on Grand Final day. Spurs, United and Cobram attended on the day, Cobram had a huge squad so we decided to join forces with Albury United and have one game instead of the round robbing that was pre planned.
All of our players thoroughly enjoyed the game and really got stuck in and tried their hardest. The players all got to walk up the steps of the BF transport trailer to get their medals which was a proud moment for Hotspurs.
A big thank you to everyone who was involved this year it was great to see so many people from the club get behind the team. A special mention to Dee, Harry and Loz who really supported all the players. A thank you to the families and carers also for getting the guys to all the games. Finally a thank you to our committee for supporting this team. Chelsea from United, Karen from AWFA and to all the players.

Match Reports
Div.2 Women v United lost 0 – 2
Unfortunately the run of wins ended Sunday with a tough 2-0 loss to united. An goal against us wasnt the start we wanted but the Ladies dug deep and held it to 1 -0 up till half time. A dubious free kick early in the second half allowed United to score the second goal but again the ladies battled hard and never gave up. Christie had a blinder of a game in goals and deserved the player of the match award that she was awarded. While the ladies didnt get the win they so desperately wanted, it was a fine season and the ladies have a lot to celebrate this year. Well done and bring on 2020.
16 Girls v Wangaratta won 0 – 0 (4 – 2 penaltise)
What a night the 16 Girls had on Saturday. After a late kick-off, the majority of the game was played under lights and as the epic battle between the two teams waged on we drew the bulk of the crowd at Myrtleford that evening. We started off with Lily in goals, who exuded confidence in the sweeper/keeper role. The goals went back and forth in the first half and we came off at half time a bit deflated, not performing to the high expectation we had of ourselves going into the game. The consensus from coach and team was that we needed to act with more aggression, want the ball more and get in front and get first to. We had a change of keepers which saw Alex put on the gloves for the second time this season. We knew we were in safe hands with our athletic wunderkind as she used her swift reflexes to deflect shot after shot. As the clock ran down on the second half we realised with the scores locked at 3-3 we would be going to extra time. The very brief five minutes each way was not enough time for either team to get over the line as the ref blew his whistle quickly grouped together to sort out our penalty takers. Ava, Lily, Daisy, Grace & Ciara were quickly named and the girls headed to the centre of the field. As we got through the first five penalty takers for each team we were locked at 5-5. As we moved on to sudden death penalties, our next one hit the crossbar, bouncing back. Alex made the first and only penalty save of the night to keep Spurs in. We continued through our list with each player hitting the back of the net until finally one of the Melrose girls missed their target, meaning we were through. It took a moment for it to sink in, but when we realised the girls hugged and cheered and let all their emotion out, followed by a rousing rendition of the Spurs song. I can’t wait to see these girls give their all in the Grand Final this Sunday, they go in as underdogs and who doesn’t love a good underdog story?
14 Girls v United 0 -0 (3 – 2 penalties)
Well what a game, never did we think we would go to penalties!! The girls have had a cracking season together and were playing the better football but just couldn’t score or find the back of the net despite all the chances. Our defence were solid and led from the back by Goal Keeper and co- captain Lil. Nothing much got through Keely, Alex, Eloise or Elisha, the defenders were supported well by Abbi and Bailee. The Midfield sominated and held the ball well with Daisy playing with heart and physical fight, Ruby, Elise and Georgia all played well on the wings and our forwards were creating chances and taking on the United defenders with Maddie, Mya, Rylee, Hayley and Ava creating chances. We took the game to extra time and were nil all meaning penalties- step up Mya, Alex, Daisy and Lil and that was all that was needed with super keeper Lil saving several. Best on ground was Mya. A huge congratulations to each of the girls and I hope they all return to spurs as the future is strong with these girls, I couldn’t be prouder of them all. A massive Thank you to the club and all the supporters on the day, it was a heart stopping game!
Thanks also to Narelle for all her work and well done girls we pulled off the league and cup!
12 Girls v Wangaratta won 1 – 0
It was a tight and tense game against a very skilled Wangaratta outfit. But as usual, the girls dug deep and managed to hold Wangaratta scoreless for the game. A second half goal to Alice was the difference but the entire team can take credit for the victory as everyone did their part in this epic win. A few tense moments in the final minutes had the huge crowd on edge but the girls made it 3 cups in a row to go with their 3 league titles in a row. Well done all to all the girls, a well deserved victory.
