Presidents Report
What a great round of Semi Final football over the weekend. On Saturday we saw our Division 2 Ladies advance to the Grand Final with a superb effort in Myrtleford before our U16 girls won in a penalty shootout under lights.
On Sunday our two league titlists also advanced to the Grand Final. The U/12 girls gutsed it out at Diamonds and the U/14 girls juggernaut rolled on again at Willow Park. Congratulations girls!!
A huge focus this year has been on the strength of our Spurs female competitors. The weekend’s results have really franked the hard work and efforts of all our female teams, players and coaches. They have all reached the Grand Final.
The first game starts at 8am with U12 girls going for the three-peat.
We also have our All Abilities team playing in their first competitive hitout starting at 10:30am.
It promises to be a great day for Hotspurs, please get along and offer your support.

Match Reports
Div.2 Women v Cobram won 3 – 1
The freezing weather in Myrtleford didn’t hinder the ladies who came out firing and soon had their highly fancied opposition worried. A few early chances both ways and then a disallowed goal to spurs (offside) kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. A moment of hard work by Ava and Lily upfront who’s work rate helped win a ball she shouldn’t have won, a crisp pass to Formosa who belted the ball into the top of the net to get the Spurs a lead. A few minutes later and Lily again took it on herself to get the team forward and with a classy finish got spurs 2-0 up. Cobram then lifted and got us on a quick counter attack to bring it back to 2-1 which is how it ended the half.
After the break, Spurs lifted and controlled most of the remainder of the game. Another freak goal from Jess from a corner and Spurs took a 3-1 lead which is how it ended.
Christie had a blinder in Goals, while Lily, Ava Formosa and Laura all had outstanding games. Good luck ladies in the big one this weekend, you deserve to do well.
16 Girls v Melrose won 10 – 9 (penaltise)
What a night the 16 Girls had on Saturday. After a late kick-off, the majority of the game was played under lights and as the epic battle between the two teams waged on we drew the bulk of the crowd at Myrtleford that evening. We started off with Lily in goals, who exuded confidence in the sweeper/keeper role. The goals went back and forth in the first half and we came off at half time a bit deflated, not performing to the high expectation we had of ourselves going into the game. The consensus from coach and team was that we needed to act with more aggression, want the ball more and get in front and get first to. We had a change of keepers which saw Alex put on the gloves for the second time this season. We knew we were in safe hands with our athletic wunderkind as she used her swift reflexes to deflect shot after shot. As the clock ran down on the second half we realised with the scores locked at 3-3 we would be going to extra time. The very brief five minutes each way was not enough time for either team to get over the line as the ref blew his whistle quickly grouped together to sort out our penalty takers. Ava, Lily, Daisy, Grace & Ciara were quickly named and the girls headed to the centre of the field. As we got through the first five penalty takers for each team we were locked at 5-5. As we moved on to sudden death penalties, our next one hit the crossbar, bouncing back. Alex made the first and only penalty save of the night to keep Spurs in. We continued through our list with each player hitting the back of the net until finally one of the Melrose girls missed their target, meaning we were through. It took a moment for it to sink in, but when we realised the girls hugged and cheered and let all their emotion out, followed by a rousing rendition of the Spurs song. I can’t wait to see these girls give their all in the Grand Final this Sunday, they go in as underdogs and who doesn’t love a good underdog story?
14 Girls v Twin City won 5 – 0
Well what a game from this mighty group of girls!! We scored early and just kept pressuring and creating scoring chances. Our defenders were solid and nothing got through. Lil was awesome in goals and kept a clean sheet. Our mid fielders moved the ball well and each and every one of the girls have worked hard together as team to make their way through to the grand final. I could not be prouder of this group of girls who are the future of spurs and better still to have all four ladies/girls team in the grand final is something to be very proud of. These girls are ready for next week. Keep up the great work girls. Also a huge thank you to the under 12 girls who week after are regulars in our team. Thanks to everyone who came and supported the girls over the weekend. Go Spurs!! Awards to Lil, Abby, Bailee and Maddie.
12 Boys v Cobram lost 0 – 1
Apart from the penalty in the second minute which split the two teams, this game was a real defensive arm wrestle and neither team had many attacking opportunities. Our defence was solid, but unfortunately so was theirs and the very limited opportunities we had were not capitalised on.
I’m proud of the team’s efforts over the last couple of months; I believe they have really grown as a team and started playing some terrific football. We won’t let this one game define us or our season as we more than matched it with the top teams all year.
Special thanks must go to Shaun Gibbons for managing the team this year, and also to the parents who persisted with the early morning games. If we keep this group together and they continue to work hard at their games next year might be ours.
12 Girls v Melrose won 2 – 0
A great game and team effort from the Spurs, against a determined Melrose outfit.
Watched on by a nervous coach and anxious families and friends, the Spurs approached the semi-final with determination and focus.
The girls dominated possession but had to fight hard all match to come away with the win. Particularly impressive for this match was the team’s defence, not allowing the opposition any real chance on goal.
Great goals to both Zali (1st half) and Rylee (2nd half) sealed the game for the Spurs.
Well done girls. A big thank you to Ava and Seanna for keeping goals. Another clean sheet!
Best of luck for the Cup Final!
