Presidents Report
It was the quintessential welcome to winter at Jelbart Park on Sunday vs the arch rivals United. We took the points across an evenly placed day and we continue to make our push for the AWFA Club Championship.
This week we have a general bye for the long weekend. Many of our junior Spurs representatives will be heading to Geelong to compete in the Vic Country Championships. This has been a long time coming, with the last 2 tournaments being cancelled at the last minute through the pandemic. Lets hope this marks a point in time that we can start a fresh and forget those days where everything was cancelled.
Go well young Spurs!
Cadbury Chocolate drive
After the long weekend, expect a fundraiser box of chocolates.
This has historically been an excellent fundraiser for the club, so please sell your 1 box, or even push yourselves to sell 2-3 more.
This is the way we can continue to provide better balls, goals, marquees, lights, eventually new clubrooms etc.
There will be prizes for those that sell the most… more to come.
Enjoy the long weekend

Div.1 Men
We travelled to a sodden Jelbart Park on Sunday to take on United. While conditions weren’t great we were certainly playing in better conditions than the reserves! United were able to find a few holes initially but our defence stood tall on more than one occasion but we went into the break 2-0 down. After a couple of tweaks to the formation we started to get into the game more and creating more forward attacks. The defence were called upon a few more times to make some important contributions but we just couldn’t find a goal to put them under more pressure. Leo continued his unfortunate run of big hits but soldiered on to run out the game and we welcomed Brando and Hoppy back into the squad, but once again, the squad is working hard to find a win. Also, we would like to thank Dibba, Jack, Joel and Cody for sitting on the bench. We now have a mini break and then crucial games against Diamonds and Twin City. This loss has us holding on to 8th and we take on 10th placed Diamonds next time we play.

Div.2 Men v United Won 5-1
In what was a mirror reversal of our first round clash the lads have kept their league dreams alive with a punishing victory over the old foe.
Missing a crucial link in Co-coach Brad, the boys could probably have won by a lot more.
Awesome to see Jay follow up a rebound shot with a timely finish. And Jack put his shoes on the right feet this week banging in 4.
Lets keep up the momentum.
Goals; Jack Castles x4, Jay Compton 1
Women Div.2 v United Lost 1-2
The Ressies women were lucky with the weather today with the rain holding off till after the game. However, the wind, decided to stick around, which made it difficult for the team going against the wind. Christie, called into goals at the last minute, did a wonderful job flighting against the wind, for the first half. Unfortunately, with thanks to the wind, one ball escaped her grasp giving United the lead. This wasn’t for long as a beautiful ball from Seanna saw Taylor strike the ball into United goals, tying the game. Gabby, Ciara, and Isla worked strong in the middle, creating lots of long balls throughout to Nat and Steph who had many scoring opportunities. Yvonne and Yvette worked well on the wings defending the ball when needed. Ingrid, Hayley, and Maddie, held a strong backline, getting the United’s forwards offside on numerous occasions. The girls played very strong as a team, with some great short passes and clear positive communication.
Over 35s v United Won 2-1
On a morning that the pitch was sloppier than Loz’s shots, there were a few dodgy heads. The original Irishman looked like he had been dragged through a bush, having celebrated his 40th on Saturday night. It was clear from the warm up that he hadn’t been the only one on the turps. In a show of the coach setting the example, Buttsy arrived for his season debut to much fanfare…. 8 seconds before kick off. As soon as he arrived, the wind picked up, coincidence??
United gave us a foothold in the game when they allowed Tuksar build the wall after Kinno was fouled. Brad miss hit the free with style, straight into the bottom corner despite the best efforts of the keeper, who got up quicker than he got down.
Unfortunately we couldn’t hold the lead and we allowed a former disgruntled Spur get round the back and level the game.
With seconds remaining, the game looked to be edging towards a draw when Utd gave away what they thought would be a safe free kick. Come of the hour, come of the man. With our usual freetaker Kinno off having gotten cold, Mickett shouldered the responsibility of dragging us back into the game. He placed the ball expertly 15 yards inside our half right on the sideline. The wind was in his face and the crowd of 7 or 8 hundred people were ringing in his ears. He stared down the goalkeeper and pointed at the goal, in a move that hushed the hostile home crowd. All 19 spectators from the Wang V City side heard the commotion and turned to catch a glimpse. Veteran ref Steve Hayes chalked the goal in the notebook seconds before the kick was taken, having witnessed the steely resolve in the back-up left back’s eyes. He drilled the ball high and into the top corner, with a finish that is sure to draw the attention of the Puskas Award Panel. The final whistle blew as the shot tore a hole in the back of the net, never to be seen again. Children jumped, women wept, Plow slipped and Buttsy dropped his guts again at the shock of what they’d just seen.
We have finally got a win against United and Mickett has finally found his range….

Missing the integral link in the team, Brads shouting from to the technical area, Jay Compton filled the void with some expert team advice.
We got the job done in some rather bleak weather. Special note to Jacob Walsh playing his first ever game, some great saves were made.
Great to see Xavier Wall score a couple of goals. We have the week off with the bye, but many of our players will be playing with their AWFA rep teams in Geelong.
Good luck to all.
Thanks again to Jay for getting out of bed early and looking after the team for the day, a good win.

13 Boys v United Won 5-3
Sadly we had to say farewell to our coach Ben this week, as he embarks on a new adventure in Melbourne. Hopefully we’ll see him a few more times between now and the end of the season and we wish him the best of luck with his new career.
It was not the best weather for free flowing football on Sunday, everybody at Jelbart can attest to, with the wind and rain picking up just as we kicked of and finishing as soon as the final whistle was blown. We conceded early in the game against the run of play, but battled back to take the lead just before half time. United started the second half well, but their challenge died off after a couple of quick goals midway through the half. Henry finished the game as a contest with about 10 minutes to go with a rocket into the top corner from 25 yards. We reshuffled the team slightly, giving a rest to some tired bodies and United pulled back a consolation just before the final whistle.
All in all a great team performance with Sam, Henry, Alec and Billy having particularly strong games. The win leaves us in 2nd, with a game in hand. Enjoy the weekend off and we are back against 3rd place Diamonds Red on the 19th.
