Presidents Report
Saturday night saw our world famous Trivia night at the Commercial Club. Years ago we would’ve taken this great night for granted and to have the great turn out we did is hopefully a sign that we are nearing the end of the pandemic. The night was not possible without some very kind donations from members and our sponsors. It was a great fundraiser but importantly a good time for members and families to get together and socialise and reflect on the season thus far. Thanks again to Ian Belgre and all the volunteers who made the night possible.
On Sunday we hosted Twin City and the great club we are, took the full points in most games. Again the crowd was dominated by our fanatic Spurs families who filled the Hill. They were especially vocal during the Senior men who managed to turn around a 1-6 loss a few weeks ago to hang on to a great 3-2 victory.
Lets hope we can get a similar amount of support this Sunday when the club travels the furthest to play Cobram.

Div.2 Men v Twin City Won 1-0
Twin City have dropped points against Spurs yet again in the Div 2 Men as they lost 1-0 on the road to a brilliant Spurs outfit.
Twin City started off well with a former Spur keeper keen to prove himself on the field and his first chance came following one of many contentious free-kicks. It came out to Haberfield just outside the area who fired it towards goal but McDonough made a great save.
The former Spur had a chance again, getting in behind the defenders he got a clean shot towards the bottom corner, it bounced just in front of McDonough but he got down low to push it out.
Although they were also good going forward, Spurs needed to tidy up their passing at the half. They had work to do in the second half to turn this around. It wasn’t a bad performance but they needed to capitalise on their chances.
The first clear chance after the restart came for the former Spurs keeper in the wrong colours. With McDonough left one out in no man’s land, the former Spur was running onto a glorious ball but he failed to get past the peoples mullet who tipped it wide. “He is not scoring against me, no bloody way” McDonough mumbled.
A real defensive dour struggle form both teams, Spurs weren’t accepting a 0-0 draw. Vanega was seen marking his run up to a corner like it was a spot kick. Many predicting it was time for him to take the game by the scruff of the neck. He shot and another high ball was again somehow caught in the iron symbols of the Twin City keeper.
Despite all of the Dongans chances, it was the mighty Spurs who made the breakthrough, Leo Castles shot finally got through Twin Cities imported keeper Francesco Totti. Metaphorically speaking, ‘you throw enough crap up against a wall and something is bound to stick’.
At the end, Vanega left a ball that bounced kindly into the path of the ‘Greek Messi’ Balassopoulos who took a shot that was fantastically tipped over the bar by Totti to keep the score at 1-0. It was a goalkeeping masterclass at both ends.
It was a result that hammered the nail in the coffin of Twin City’s Div 2 League hopes for 2022 but kept the Spurs chances well and truly alive.
Special mention to Tap in Townies strings that managed to last the 10 minutes at the start of the match that Marius took to get to the ground. A shame the 11th minute wasnt so good. All the best for your recover, see you back cherry ripe for finals.
This week, train, train and train again.
Goal: Lionel Castles x1
Women Div.2
After a worrying near forfeit waiting for our 17 girls to join us from their previous game, we kicked off with a strong start against Twin City. For the first 35 minutes the girls created countless goal scoring opportunities. Isla and Seanna had some very close calls and there were many beautiful stings of passes between Ciara, Hayley and Taylor. With a tie of 0 – 0 at half time, Grace made a stunning entrance on the field after taking up the gloves in the first half but copped an unfortunate tackle and came off injured before she could wreak havoc in the forward line. Fortunately, with a great cross from Christie, Gabby was allowed to break the dead lock by finding the back of the net. Soon after, a well placed through ball gave Steph the opportunity to evade the strong keeper, bringing the score to 2 – 0. Well done to Yvette and Maddie who held strong in defence, helping to stop Twin City from any scoring chances. A special mention to our under 17s Bianca who had a stellar game and who was greatly appreciated after filling in our short side last minute for her fourth game of the day!
Over 35s v Twin City
This was a very late kick-off for the old boys at 2:40 PM in the afternoon. It showed this time didn’t suit as the team was caught having their nanna nap and fell behind soon after kick-off. Not many positives came out of the game. We were able to score 3 goals but conceding 7 is just embarrassing.
Div.3 Men v Twin City Won 5-0
With player coach Doug absent on holidays, Kel Davies came out of coaching hiatus to lend a hand managing the team on Sunday. He was well assisted by son Brodie and also guided by the big fella Joel.
Kel decided a formation change in set up and also added a few words for players to try and implement in the game.
The team which had many lads backing up from the 16 boys and also a helping hand from Over 35s player Scotty started reasonably well against a similar young Twin City squad. We defended well and were moving the ball well from the backline to the forwards but seemed reluctant to take responsibility and take a shot on goal when the opportunity presented itself. It wasn’t until mid way through the first half that we were able to break the deadlock and take the lead. That first goal seemed to kick start a scoring spree and the team ran away with the game from then on for a comfortable 5 to 0 victory, Frankie 3 (Nice hat trick lad), Nati 1, Jeol 1.
Besides Frankie, special mentions to the back three of Tyrese, Fred and Jack. Also to Mo who provided an assist and came very close to scoring himself when he sent a shot just by the top left corner of the goal, this would have been the goal of the day had it snuck in.
All other players made significant contributions.
The victory allowed the team to go above Twin City into 7th and after next weekend bye should find the team in 6th.

16 Boys v Twin City Lost 0-1
In a clash that could’ve had us at the top of the table saw a rather disappointing result.
We dominated parts of the play but couldn’t register 1 single shot on goal.
The season can be resurrected this weekend but will need a willingness to turn up to training with the proper mindset rather than the soap opera melodrama that seems to dominate the last few sessions.
With such a talented group of players, Im confident we can get the results against Cobram.
