Match Reports
Over 35s v Cobram
Round one saw us traveling out of town to face Cobram. Unfortunately, half of our squad forgot about the Sunday match, despite our midweek training sessions, rendering themselves unavailable for selection. However, Mr. Bobby Burns, our reliable scuba diver, answered the call to arms with late notice, providing us with 2 substitutes for the game.
Overall, Spurs displayed dominance, and we should have been more than one goal up going into the break. Despite Cobram’s resilience, we managed to keep them scoreless with some scrambling defense.
The second half mirrored the first, with Mickett securing his brace after a fortunate ball fell to him on the edge of the box, putting us 2 goals ahead. However, a few defensive lapses led to Cobram capitalizing and pulling one back, making it 2-1 midway through the second half, compounded by BR’s red card for a misdemeanor.
Nevertheless, we quickly extended our lead once again. A well-placed free kick by Diego found the back of the net, courtesy of another foul by Cobram.
Despite being a man down, we maintained control of the game until the final whistle, emerging as well-deserved winners.
Div.2 Women v Cobram
After a solid pre season the Div 2 Women hit the pitch with enthusiasm against Cobram in Round 1. Leadership group was announced pre game with Chantal Gleeson (Captain) and Gabby Grant (Vice Captain) leading the team this year. Good luck ladies! With the collapse of the U16G league we welcomed many girls to the squad and makes for an exciting year ahead.
We were quick to get on the front foot and dominate possession from the first whistle. A stiff breeze in our face we peppered the goals but were unable to get the score we deserved on the board. Our defence denied any opportunity during the first half and it was Mya Carroll from the top of the box to score the opener for the year just on half time. MJ (Muireann Kilroy on debut) put 2 in the back of the net 10mins into the second half in quick succession and we maintained the majority of possession for the rest of the game (missing more chances along the way). A great start to the year running out 3-0 winners. Well done to all debutants with everyone contributing throughout the 70 mins. The women are looking forward to the home game this week and the year ahead.
BOG Mya Carroll for her first half goal and dominance through the midfield
Div.1 Men v Cobram
We went into the game with a few different players to last year, we have lost Jack and Finn who have returned home to Scotland, but may be back one day and wish them well. Over the off season, we had one of our juniors Mitch Spokes return to the club after a stint at Murray and welcomed Hugo “Boss” Elwood as well, say hello to the new guys when you see them around the club.
The Cobram road trip is one of the hardest away games of the season and the warm weather soon had the spectators looking for shade and the players wishing that there were playing a different sport. The first half was a very fast paced game considering the conditions, we found ourselves 1 nil up when Jacob slotted home from a great set of play. Unfortunately we conceded in the 22nd minute and then again in the 25th minute before Manny banged one home from close range to level the scores just before halftime. The second half became a battle of the fittest with both teams having opportunities to add to the scoreboard, but neither could. Cobram had a goal disallowed and we made a couple of changes to spark the game. Heathy put in a gut busting shift after have the spicy cough and was replaced by Kristian Shipard who continues to elevate himself after an interrupted preseason. Townie came on for Manny and Luke and Jay played their part after the last substitutions. We created the final chance of the game but unfortunately the ball didn’t go into the back of the net but was reported found at the Yarrawonga KFC.
What do we take from the game, we need to not have lapses that cause us to concede multiple goals in short periods of time and to take the game on a little more and not be so frightened of making a mistake in the final third, “small moments make big differences”.
The Grill’d player of the day award went to Mitch, but could have easily gone to many other players as well.
Our thanks to Joel for sitting on the beach, the supporters who stayed to watch us in the heat and to the players who have put in so hard over preseason.
After the draw we are currently 6th on the ladder and we welcome 5th placed Twin City to Aloysius this weekend.
