Over 35s
Sunday, Muddy Sunday. On a soggy, wet, and slippery Lambert Park, we hosted Wangaratta, eager to put in our best performance. Our strategy was to limit our opposition’s possession by taking more care and precision with our passing. Unfortunately, the ground conditions and our haste in releasing the ball too early prevented us from achieving this to the coach’s expectations. However, we compensated with determination in ball recovery.
T-Bone got us started with a tap-in from close range, followed by Milky going on a scoring spree, bagging a hat trick in just 8 minutes, giving us a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The second half continued in the same vein, with some nice lead-up play creating scoring opportunities. The goals kept coming every 5 minutes, with another 5 goals in the second half.
It was a good team effort from all involved, including the subs. Defensively, the team was solid, with Lee in goal only having to make one save. Yasser had a standout game and received a Grill’d match award. Milky, with his 6 goals, also collected a Grill’d player of the match award. T-Bone scored 2, and Mickett also found the back of the net.
Special mention and thank you to Ian Diver who was willing to ref the game for us, the team and especially the coach very much appreciated you for doing so.
Over 35s Midweek Catch-up Game vs. Twin City
We were initially reluctant to postpone this fixture back on July 14th, but doing so turned out to be a blessing. The available squad was outstanding on the night, and we ran out 4-2 winners!
We started very well, executing the coach’s instructions perfectly. We had lots of possession and should have been 1 or 2 up after 15 minutes, as we created 4 or more great chances to score. Twin City, on the other hand, had difficulty containing our midfield of T-Bone, Townie, Kinno, and Rudy. Townie was “The Conductor” who orchestrated a beautiful symphony of football. They managed only 2 decent chances on goal in the first half, even with their very speedy and skillful M. Hasler up front. All credit to our defensive four of Loz, JC, Sam, and Doug, who were outstanding. JC was “The Wolf” and tidied up anything that required it.
Rudy worked hard and needed a breather midway through the first half. Neil came on and put in an equally great shift. The coach made another small tactical change, introducing Brad, who had an immediate effect. When the ball found its way to him just inside the box, he didn’t hesitate and drove a low shot past their keeper to draw first blood. Not long after, Brad played a delightful ball through to the in-form Milky, who ran on and slotted home our second.
As expected, Twin City came out in the second half with more gusto, and we were forced back a lot early on. Their pressure disrupted our ability to keep possession, eventually earning them a penalty, which they converted to get back in the game.
Our defense took a hit when Sam came off injured, but Loz stepped back into his customary position in the center of defense, and Rudy took the outside role. Eventually, we regained control of the match. Our defense held firm, our midfield controlled the game, and T-Bone’s second half was strong. The old boy rolled back the years and was full of running. Up front, Mickett was superb, linking with the midfield, while the dynamic Milky ran their defense ragged.
Milky hit the post from one he’d score 9 times out of 10, but that didn’t stop him. He scored another two goals to get yet another hat trick, ensuring a great victory for the Spurs.
Everyone involved, from Ian supporting the team and running the line to all players, subs, and the coach, were excellent. Thanks also to the few supporters who braved the cold evening to support us old lads—we appreciate you.
