SEMI-FINALS THIS SUNDAY – JELBART PARK

It was an exciting time on Sunday with five Hotspurs teams progressing to the Cup semi-finals. Special mention should be made of the Over 35s, the Thirds Men and the Sixteen Boys all of whom were beaten in very close games against higher ranked opponents. The Fourteen Boys should also be highlighted as they turned a 9-0 defeat from last weekend to a 1-0 win on Sunday against the same club. What a great effort !

JUNIOR PRESENTATION (5-16 players)

This Saturday 9th September at Aloysius Park from 2pm to 5pm.
Free BBQ for the players. Face painting and jumping castle. All players will be rewarded for their efforts this year.

11 Boys v Melrose won 6 – 2
Despite the early start our team came out strong against Melrose, whom had given us a huge scare in Round 22. Our U11’s may of still been hyped up on the red cordial and the chocolate cake from the team celebrations the night before as we took early control, a much better start than last week. Cooper scored to give us some much needed confidence early but Melrose soon equalised after a dubious penalty?or free kick?or an indirect free kick which left Lenny shaking his head and our defenders, goalie Al, the crowd and our coaches confused !
However Dustin soon found the net and the nerves of the coaches and parents seemed to settle again. At halftime it was 2-1.
The second half we ran away with the game. Nathan and Mitch were firing on 24 cylinders in right back and right wing, Lenny was back in form, staying upright on his Size 8 feet in defence and once again proved deadly, moving up forward for the corners with a perfect goal to give us some breathing space.

Ryan’s golden left boot scored 2 goals and then with a perfect cross from Mitch, Aydan finished the match off with a perfect goal.
The whole team played well and showed the form that proved why we were the League Champions this year. A big match against Wangaratta in the semi finals -Go Spurs !

We held our teams celebrations at Major League Saturday afternoon(Thanks Jackie). Our team enjoyed party food, playing some indoor soccer and Mia’s PowerPoint vote count and a t-shirt presentation celebrating what a great year we have had. Some awards were given out on the night that singled out individual players but every time our team plays, they play with the mindset I’m playing today to make my team mates the best players on the pitch.

12 Boys v Melrose lost 0 – 7

13 Boys v Melrose lost 2 – 4
Gutted! Was not the way we would have liked the game to play out. The wind was horrendous and the ground not much better, bumpy and very hard made it difficult for good play. We started well but didn’t put any meaningful shots on target which cost us dearly as Melrose were ruthless when the opportunity was presented to score.
The team should be very proud of their year, having had a very strong second half of the season.

13 Girls v Cobram won 9 – 0
Wow what a game from the mighty Under 13 girls- the girls passed the ball around well as a team and always look to support each other. Lil was awesome in goals, our defenders keely, Paige, Brooke, Katie and Sienna settled into their game and cleared the ball well. The midfield was led by Ava who slotted 4 goals then went to play for the 13 boys and then was back again for the 16 girls- just awesome!! Mattea, Ruby and Emma ran the wings well and Salli, Olivia, Georgia and Hayley all played well. Daisy was an absolute star and best on for the girls chasing down everything and creating scoring chances!!

Well Done girls, super proud of the growth and efforts as a whole team, who dont care who scores, they play as a team!! Thanks Scott for running the line.

16 Girls v Melrose won 4 – 1
After the nerves settled and the girls went into the half nil all. The girls came out wanting the game and the ball. We created many scoring chances and never gave up chasing down every ball. These girls have had a tough season but have never given up and played for each other each and every game showing real team and spurs spirit. With these girls coming through the future looks good for females and girls football. The finals will be exciting and I am so proud of you, Bring it on!! Thanks Craig for running the line and to all the parents and supporters who came back and cheered the girls on- they never give up!! Go spurs!!

14 Boys v Melrose won 1 – 0
The Fourteen Boys turned a 9-0 defeat from last weekend to a 1-0 win on Sunday against the same club. What a great effort !

16 Boys v Diamonds lost 0 – 1

Thirds v United lost 4 – 6
The season is over for the Thirds Men after a close match that went to a penalty shootout. The first half saw the team struggle to stay on the front foot and United quickly scored their first goal, then shortly after, another. Down 2 nil at half-time the coaches exhorted the players to greater effort and their words had an immediate and continuing effect. The Spurs were a different team in the second half and played some magnificent football. A curled free kick from Mitch into the box ended with Zac managing to bundle the ball into the net and we were on the board. Then an attack down the left wing saw the ball bounce to Ol, who finished calmly into an open net. Zac took a ball in the face at close range but played on despite a bleeding swollen lip. Mitch reinjured his ankle and had to retire. The game went into extra time and both sides had some chances but no scores were recorded so it was down to a penalty shootout. This is never a good way to end a game and we went down 2 to 4. Overall, however, the team had a great season considering how young they are compared to most of the other Thirds.
Thankyou very much again to the Sixteens players who stepped up week after week – Manny, Josh, Denzel, Jacob, Harrison, Felix and of course goalkeeper Scott. Thanks to all our overage players too – Jim Brodie, Joel McDonough, Rob Tuksar, Indra Poudel, Gary Kavanagh and John Belgre. There are three coaches in that lot so there was always plenty of directing on the ground. And many thanks to Ian and John for coaching – it’s been a good year.

Over 35s v United lost 1 – 2 (Golden Goal)
The Overs 35s put up a valiant effort but were denied progression through to the semi-final by a questionable (hand ball) goal in extra time. Everyone that witnessed the incident were pretty certain that it would have been a free kick to us in any other match. It would be nice to have some consistency throughout the year in regards to these rulings. Down 1-0 in the first 5 minutes the squad showed guts & determination to fight back to even the scores & eventually force extra time. We did have our chances but were never rewarded with a goal. This was a polished performance by the team & would not have been out of place for the main game at Spurs Stadium. Although disappointed by the result we must remember that we achieved what we set out to do at the start of the season. Our aim was to finish higher up the ladder & play better competitive football then in previous years. I think we have also gained some credibility & respect from the other Over 35s club sides who I would imagine to be very wary of us now.

Senior Men v Myrtleford lost 1 – 3
The senior men finished their season with a strong effort against this years League Champions. Our seniors have improved greatly over the year and full credit should go to the players and coach Robert Tuksar. The young players Ray Kausche, Ben Gardiner, Luke Dahl and Mitch Anderson had great first years and Jerome Dunphy (who scored 14 goals) Tony Zahtila, Sam Thorman and Toby Sua were terrific additions to our squad this year. Lewis Parrett, Ranga Neopanay, Paul Kinning and captain Jon Cochrane continued to be big contributers to the side. Well done to all players.!

CUP FINALS BEGIN SUNDAY

The Cup final games commence on Sunday and Hotspurs have thirteen teams playing which is a wonderful effort. Remember these games are knock-outs so once beaten your season ends.
If games are drawn on Sunday extra time is played. (5 min each way for juniors 10mins each way for seniors)
The first goal scored in extra time wins the game.
If the games are still drawn after extra time a penalty shootout is used the decide the winner.

11 Boys v Melrose won 6 – 3
The opposition gave us a huge scare in the first half of the match scoring in the first 12 seconds ! Our defenders were still asleep and struggling to stay on their feet for the first half. Luckily after a inspiring half time address by the coach our young Spurs were relentless in the second half and playing more our style of game . Much improvement will be needed if we are to progress far in the cup finals .Go Spurs !

After narrowly loosing to Diamonds 1 – 2, being out played by Wang 0 – 4, we have then won seven straight, including 4th place Melrose and the league champions City.

Thirds v Melrose drew 1 – 1
On the final game of the home and away round the Thirds had their first draw of the season. Despite being the better team on the day they managed to convert only once when Denzel ran the ball down the field and goaled. They had a number of other chances and controlled much of the play. Well done to all team-members. Thanks from the manager to all who those who donned a marshal’s vest throughout the season (particular thanks to Julie and Kylie who stepped up regularly) and thanks to all our linespeople – Helen Wilson, Roland Linssen, Lewis Parrett, Ben Gardiner, Andrew Gardiner, Mitchell Anderson and Sam Thorman.

Over 35s v Melrose drew 2 – 2
Our place in the finals & our opponents were all but decided in the previous week so this was a time to see how we were travelling against another top 4 club. Previously beaten by this team in the first half of the season we should have turned the tables & won this match comfortably. Our structure definitely faded towards the end of the match & we certainly let them back into the game. In hindsight the obvious thing to do was to have made them chase the ball as they had no subs on their bench. However there was some good hard work put into this fixture by our side. Spurs showed intensity but had some poor judgement at times & the ball was hard to control at stages due to the windy conditions. A weak penalty in the first half & an over ruling by the ref on the linesman for offside late in the second half were our only failures to keep a clean sheet.

Reserve Men v Melrose lost 2 – 3

The Ressies played well in their final game.They found themselves down 0-3 and came home strongly to just miss getting a draw. This team will not play finals but had some good wins during the season.Thanks to all the players who turned up every week to play because this team was struggling to get numbers earlier in the year.

This was an exciting game. the Seniors have improved greatly during the year. Ray Kausche was terrific in goals and made some great saves. Tony and Ranga were great in defence while Luke Dahl and Jon Cochrane were outstanding in the midfield. The Seniors have made the finals for the first time in several years- something many did not see happening during pre-season.
