From time to time there will be some useful information posted here for our coaches.

Coaches can also utilise the Coaching Panel for help, with any aspect of coaching. It’s an experienced, and great group, to assist those wishing to develop their coaching and ultimately the teams performances.

Match Reports

11 Girls v United won 6 – 3
The undermanned Spurs had another win, this time against an improved United outfit.
The match was tightly contested with United challenging the girls across the park.
Spurs dominated possession and converted on a couple of opportunities, when presented. A determined United pushed forward with a couple of breaks, leading to goals. ALL the Spurs responded to the pressure and lifted their efforts and intensity both in defence and attack, creating more opportunities, possession, and more goals.
Elisha ended up scoring 4 impressive goals for the match, and both Mia and Rylee netted late goals to seal the win. Special mention to Seanna – a best on ground performance. Seanna was everywhere, and her defensive skills diffused many of United’s advances in the midfield.
Big thanks to Eloise and Zali in goals, both making a couple of great saves.
Well done to ALL the girls – a deserved, hard fought win.

13 Girls v Heart won 11 – 2
It was an exciting opportunity for the Under 12 Girls to be provided the opportunity to play on the main pitch.
Wodonga Heart had 8 players available, which we also matched. On a large pitch the girls were able to pass the ball well and created many scoring chances with Georgia scoring a cracking first goal from the corner.
The goals were scored by many players on the day with Tahlia scoring the 100th goal for the season.
Thank you to Eloise for stepping up and playing in Under 13’s. With one game to go it is confirmed the Under 13 girls will claim the league championship.
A fantastic effort by all players.

12 Boys v Heart won 2 – 0
Sometimes we approach games like they are going to be a walk in the park and they aren’t. This was game was like that.
Wodonga Heart have struggled all year and we won the previous fixture 10-1.
The team were a bit flat but got the job done. Hopefully we can put that behind us and finish off the season strong.
Metaphorically speaking, watching this game was like going to all 5 days of a cricket test match, and on day 5 its 0/110 and the two batsmen from day one are still at the crease. Not very exciting.

Thirds v Heart won 2 – 0
A win is a win is a win and the Thirds won on Sunday in a scrappy affair where we couldn’t quite get it together for much of the match. We dominated play and managed to score twice early in the first half, through Oliver and Denzel, but thereafter, though the opportunities were there, couldn’t seem to play the way we wanted. We were never in danger of losing, and there were some really good passages of play, but overall not the best game we’ve played. Kudos to keeper Will who didn’t see much of the ball but when he did made a couple of terrific saves. There were several bruising clashes and crashes and it was good to have Ray back (hope the hamstring is OK). Thanks to Shane for running the lines at short notice. received the mug, well deserved! With next week a bye for us, we will be training this Wednesday (8th), then Monday (13th) and Wednesday (15th) so we are ready for our next game.

YOUNG PLAYERS IN HOTSPURS SENIOR TEAMS

Manny Balassopoulos aged 17 played his first game in the senior mens team last Sunday. Manny played a great game in the teams 4-1 win against Cobram.
Manny joined Luke Dahl(18), Zac Fordham (18) and Ben Gardiner(17) in our Senior Men’s team on Sunday. Mitch Anderson (18) and Jacob Schreiber(16) have also played regularly with the seniors. It is particularly satisfying to see so many Spurs juniors representing our club at the senior level.
Not to be outdone we also have many of our great young female players in our Division Two Womens team. Bella Godfrey(16), Yasmin Linssen(16), Alesha MacKinnon(16),Laura Gillard(16) and Ava Tuksar(14) are all playing in this side which has now won six games straight.
Well done to all our young senior players and thank you for your commitment to our club.

Match Reports

11 Boys v Cobram won 2 – 1
This game was weeks in the making, we needed to beat Diamonds last week to stay in the race for the league championship. We did.
The next step was beating an undefeated Cobram rep team who were 1 point clear on top of the ladder.
Cobram started in a flurry and for the first 10 mins looked well on top. But to the boy’s credit and some rigid work from the defence under Captain Lenny they battled on. Cooper had a few shots that were either tipped over or just off line but then managed to beat a couple of players, on to clear the way for a crushing effort from distance. 1-0 up
Half time came about and the boys agreed to sharpen up their passing and maintain a more defensive approach.
10 minutes in and the coach challenged 2 benched forwards in Josh and Will to give us 5 powerful minutes upfront.
Our youngest team members were up to the challenge. Josh held the ball in well with some great aggression and managed to bust through one challenge and offload a ball to Will. Young Tiny shimmied and dazzled his way around one or two more and found space to smash one into the net for our second. You little ripper!!
The coach believed the game was ‘iced’ with 5 mins to go so started doing crazy stuff with the interchanges to keep the crowd on their toes.
There were whispers from the gallery, rhetoric like, “Does Brad know Lenny and Cooper are off at the same time?”,
“Has that clown gone mad?” “Check his pulse someone!” “Is this guy even awake?”
Well the truth is, he had momentarily gone crazy, and no less than 20 secs of Lenny coming off the ground, Cobram slotted one right through the gap left by his departure.
We all make mistakes, and it is something Brad discusses with the team on a regular basis.
What you learn from your mistakes is the important lesson, and helps you grow.
Before the re-start, Lenny was back on the ground sweeping, and this incident will not be spoken of again.
We held on, the crowd went wild.
If we win the next 2 games we are assured of the league championship.

12 Boys v Cobram lost 0 – 7
The under 12s Cobram rep team are a solid unit and are undefeated.
We made a good fight of it however and the score truly doesn’t reflect how competitive our players were.
Ethan had another outstanding game in goals, Aydan came on up front and probably played his best game, with heaps of aggression and lovely timed passes we just missed our opportunities when they arose. Lenny was tireless at the back and Alonso, Daisy and Ruby had great games also.
Cobram on the other hand, have players cracking shots from 30 yards going into the top corners.
We are confident we will also be playing in such a way in the near future, just not yet. Anything is possible in the finals.

Special mention to our old mate Mitch “Spokesy” Spokes who ran the line in the 11s and 12s, great effort and thanks heaps.

13 Girls v Cobram won 10 – 1
A solid game from the girls. We passed the ball around nicely and created many scoring chances.
Elisha was on fire up front and scored 6 goals. Keely passed the ball well in the midfield with Ruby and Dasiy supporting her.
Our defenders were solid as ever lead by Alex- Emma, Georgia and Bella did well being first to the ball.
Hayley, Ava and Mya chased the ball down and pressed hard up front.
Thanks to Ash who was injured but came and helped time keep. Great work in goals by Lil and Sophie who shared a half each.
Great team work girls- Our special Tupperware award this week went to Elisha with 6 goals. Thanks to Craig and Ava for running the line.

Reserve Ladies v Cobram won 2 – 1
An interesting match vs Cobram this weekend. We had plenty of opportunities to score but were unable to hit the back of the net. Anna was one of the few who were able to, putting an amazing shot into the top corner of the goal, supported by Jess A who was there to follow it in just in case. We had a few other close calls, with Jess B doing some amazing corner kicks. Bella got her head to one which threatened the keeper, while Jess’ next corner almost curved into the net, forcing the keeper to prove her worth yet again.
Yas and Laura continued the amazing effort on the wings, crossing the ball in for shots on goal. Their one-two passes with the defence and midfield opened up opportunities to take the ball down the wings. Alesha, Jess A and B and Sian played the ball amongst each other well in Cobram’s half, again putting the pressure on their defenders.
Our defenders continued their hard work, with Kelly, Caitie, Snowy and Millie proving difficult to get by, and with Christie gathering up the balls that did.
A rare break from one of their attackers meant Cobram levelled the score in the second half. Spurs ladies retaliated though, with Shelby taking a run from the backline to have a crack at goal. Her kick was powerful enough to find net despite an attempt at deflection by the keeper, bringing the score to 2-1.
Thanks Kevin for running the lines for us and congratulations to the ladies on their 6th consecutive win! Celebrations at Brady’s were had and Millie received the mug, well deserved! With next week a bye for us, we will be training this Wednesday (8th), then Monday (13th) and Wednesday (15th) so we are ready for our next game.

15 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Did you know in our club history this year not only marks our 45th year but 15 years since the Senior Men won the League and Cup double in 2003.
Below is the profiles of the squad members. You may recognise a few who are not only still around at the club but are also still playing.

Match Reports

11 Girls v Diamonds won 2 – 0
Spurs were confronted with a 10 man defence in this game and found it difficult to find a way through and despite numerous chances went into the break 0-0. Credit to the Diamonds girls, they put their bodies in the way of our shots and were fearless. The Spurs girls however outclassed them and eventually the pressure we put on paid off. An indirect freekick was taken brilliantly, Elisha passing into the path of Poppy who slotted it into the top corner to get our first goal. Not long later, Elisha put a nice pass through the defence for Ava to run onto who calmly put it past the keeper. Bianca played out of her skin and took home the Mad Mex award this week. Her work rate was amazing and she created chance after chance up front. Once again the backs 3 of Zali, Taylor and Eloise (and later on Isla who moved back) were like brick wall, deflecting any attacking chances the opposition had. Lucy made her debut as Keeper and did fantastic keeping a clean sheet, as did Ava in the first half. Rylee is playing a great role as striker and has developed a brilliant possession game where she is always looking to offload to someone in a better position as she normally has 6 defenders marking her. Seanna and Elisha are working well together in the central midfield positions while Alice and Poppy had strong games out wide, both making numerous runs and crosses. As usual, Mia was always sneaking around goal and was unlucky not to snag a goal or two. Chelsea overcame an early injury to put in a strong performance in the midfield and later on up front. We have a bye this week but let’s get everyone to training, only 3 games left before the finals.

11 Boys v Diamonds won 1 – 0
With everyone back from holidays, albeit a little rusty, we had good freshen up training session with Rob Tuksar, a few Senior Spurs and 14 Pizzas on Thursday. This game was very important and we treated as a mini final.
Cooper scored a ripper header off some silver service from an Aydan corner. We had many other opportunities but the defence of Diamonds were very well drilled and will be sporting many bruised legs from parried shots from Lenny, Josh, Cooper and Carl.
Speaking of Carl, he was a very welcomed return in the centre midfield position, freeing up other players to return to their regular spots.
Our backs were superb on Sunday, Diamonds were a fast, highly skilled outfit that slipped past our defences on only a few occasions to be stopped by our sweeper Dustin and right back John. Our other backs, Charlie, Nick, Murray and Sam also deserve mentions as they played a stanched roll with many selfless acts that eventually saw us driving the ball into attack.
We decided to keep a very defensive structure in the second half, moving big Lenny into the sweeper roll and letting Dustin move a little further forward in the midfield. A roll which he relished and a move that just might make the difference come finals.
A must win that kept the league hopes alive. Our best win at that.
Next week, match of the season against the Cobram rep team, and should decide the league.
We also need one or two parents to help out with the BBQ this Sunday please. 11-3pm

12 Boys v Diamonds won 4 – 2
The Latrobe Uni ground really brought the best out of our 11s and 12s today.
Headed towards the University road end, there was no breeze. We started off in our usual flurry. Keeping the ball in our attacking half with plenty of action on goals eventually amounting to arguably our best team goal of the year through Alonso slamming in one just outside the 6 yard box off a well guided header from Lenny off a Cooper corner. We finally had some reward for effort.
At half time, the change of ends somehow saw the arrival of the Roaring Forties, completely isolated and concentrated to Ground 3 Latrobe University in the direction Diamonds were facing. Brad fair dinkum nearly blew onto the road himself.

The battle continued for a dour 20 minutes having all the hallmarks of another honourable loss where we had a few chances and tried hard. There was no way we could get it past half way, let alone into the box for a shot.
Enter Ruby, who was having none of it, if the ball was at her feet then the cyclonic conditions made no difference.
Through some great runs in the middle by Lenny, Ben and Alonso, a few wide balls were provided for Ruby to stamp her mark. She connected a through-ball to Cooper who finally used his pace to cut through defences and slot one off the post. (2-2 @48mins)

The Diamonds kick-off was swallowed by Lenny, he beat one, off loaded to Alonso then onto a break away forward Aydan, who took on one more and his sublimely timed through-ball to Cooper saw him score a brace in 20 seconds. (3-2 @ 48.2mins)

Thirds v Diamonds lost 2 – 4
The Thirds played a ripper of a match on Sunday and, though we didn’t win, coach Joel called it one of the best games of the season. Against a very speedy opposition the team worked hard to retain possession of the ball and play to feet. Within the first 15 minutes Jacob scored the first goal after a terrific pass from Cody, then Diamonds scored a pair. We had our second after a rough bump from the opposition keeper led to a penalty which Charters calmly slotted away. That meant we went to the break, taken a little early after Denzel injured his knee, evenly poised at 2-2. Alas we couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half but it wasn’t until the final 10 minutes that Diamonds scored the decider; they then followed it up with another with half a minute to spare. Well done to all the team for a great effort, with the defenders always switched on and the attackers managing some great runs forward. Thanks to Ben for running the lines.

Over 35s v Diamonds lost 0 – 1
After the 35s split into 4 seperate teams on Friday night to give the rest of the club a chance to win something they reunited for the battle of 4th verses 5th at Diamond Park. With 20 players on our roster we had our backs to the wall with only 12 available for this match. After a long injury break we finally welcomed Butsy back in goals much to the relief of our former keepers Gaz, Aido and Ed and it was nice of Diamonds to put us one the massive main ground to entertain the sold out crowd. The first half was an end to end battle but we just couldn’t seem to get a meaningful shot on goal while Diamonds had us under pressure with every break they made. At half time we spoke of the importance of not playing the ball so wide on such a big pitch and taking some more shots and the team responded accordingly. We had a few clear cut chances that we couldn’t get past the keeper before unfortunately a defensive effort was judged to have been a foul and Diamonds scored from the resulting free kick that came off the underside of the bar. We pushed and pushed but could not get the equaliser, with the loss pushing us to 6th. Kelvin, Rob, Wayne and Damo all played great games and we now head into a 3 week break before the final match of the season against Melrose. Also, we would like to acknowledge the effort of the referee and his professionalism on Sunday and Coasty for running the line and Aido for running the bench. Good luck to Rob and Ed who picked up injuries and hopefully they will be ok for the finals.

Div.2 Men v Boomers won 2 – 1 (round 17)
A cracking game of football was played when we ventured over the hill to play a spirited boomers outfit. After some good performances over the previous weeks the boys were in a great mood after watching their mentors smack the boomers 35’s before kick off. The game was fast and furious and played with a fair bit of passion, with our evergreen forward getting a fair bit of advice from the officials. The game featured a two wonder strikes from Ethan and JC and another great game from Will in goals again along with each and every player giving everything to see us win 2-1. Thanks to all the supporters for sticking around in the cold.

Div.2 Men v Diamonds lost 2 – 10
After some great efforts over the last month we came crashing down to earth at the hands of a merciless diamonds outfit who are chasing a cup title. We were completely overwhelmed in the first 15 minutes and were 6-0 down before we found some composure with the guidance of JC. At half time we spoke about changing the game into an active training drill and what we could get out of it, the boys were set 2 goals, not to concede a goal in the first 10 minutes and to score a goal. Coach Butsy was wondering if he needed to adopt the officials ear pieces and mikes for half time talks as we conceded after 20 seconds! To their credit the boys stepped up again and were awarded a penalty. JC stepped up to the spot only to see the keeper save his first effort before getting another crack after the keeper moved off his line early. JC collected his thoughts and again went to stroke the ball onto the net only for the keeper to pick the right way again and save it.With Will holding down the keepers role our other keeper Oscar was thrown in the deep end and played up front and scored his first goal for Spurs with a great finish. The boys continued to battle hard and were awarded with another penalty, a hush fell over the crowd as Captain Mickett walked forward to get the ball only to give the to Lee for him to calmly slot the ball home. In the end we ended up losing 10-2 but with five third grade players gaining more valuable game time and two thirty fives filling in as well we were outclassed but are still a long shot of making the finals.

Div.2 Ladies v Diamonds won 1 – 0
The reserve ladies continued their winning streak with a close win over Diamonds on the weekend. Christie was tested a bit more in goals this week, but kept the score sheet clean. Caitie, Millie, Kelly and Shelby also challenged the Diamond attackers, preventing them from having too many chances at goal. Laura tested her skills out in the midfield, proving her skills in any position she is put in. Yas, Alesha, Bella and Anna continued to be reliable, creating chances in the Diamond’s half. Ava also appeared on field again for reserve ladies, testing Diamond’s defense and providing more opportunities for the ladies to get a goal. Jess A had a great game until injury prevented her from continuing.
It was not until the last five minutes of the game that we were able to put points on the board. Jess B used her skills to receive the ball, hold off a defender whilst lining up the shot, then decisively putting the ball in the back of the net. An amazing goal, which earned the reserve ladies their 5th win in a row.
Thank you to Justin and Lilly Godfrey for running the lines for us and the support from Snowy on the sidelines, who was out due to injury this week. Cheers also to our coach Townie. I’m sure he would appreciate it if we didn’t leave it to last minute to score next time though. Let’s continue our hard work at training to prepare for next week ladies!

U11 Girls v Melrose won 1 – 0
It was always going to be difficult to back-up to the same level after last weeks demolition of 2nd place Wangaratta, and it was tough going early against the ever improving Melrose outfit. The girls once again dominated possession and field position, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Zali had a long range attempt hit the post in the first half but chances were few and far between. The Melrose defence did a stellar job of clearing the ball and gave us little room up front. Half time saw a goalkeeper change for Spurs, Ava was unleased up front for Spurs and Mia made her goalkeeping debut and did a great job keeping a clean sheet. The second half saw the girls lift a gear and produce wave after wave of attack, again with little luck in snaring a goal. Alice hit the post, Elisha hit Poppy, and just about everyone else had shots that just couldn’t find their way in. It looked like the game would end in a draw until Seanna snuck up from defensive midfield to slot a great goal from the edge of the box with only 90 seconds left to play. It was a great end to and exciting hard fought game. Imi picked up the Mad Mex award this week, her second half on the right side was exceptional, working tirelessly in attack and defence and getting some great runs down the wing. The defensive back 3 of Taylor, Eloise and Zali again were strong and shut down all attack from Melrose. Let’s get as many to training as possible for the last few weeks so we can give ourselves the best chance possible in the finals.

11 Boys v Boomers won 7 – 0
Lead by Zavier this week it was a great game by all.
We are almost at full strength after the school holidays and we are ready for the 2 biggest weeks of the season against Diamonds and Cobram.
The team worked very well, often piecing together 4 or 5 pass sequences and if it wasn’t for some outstanding keeping from the opposition in the first half this game would have blown out into double figures.
Superb midfield run from Cooper, Lenny, Will and a great return from our “gamer” Isaiah.
The backs did their job when needed
Please get to training on Thursday, the next two weeks will decide who finishes first in the league.
The award this week went to Ethan who didn’t touch the ball and his ability to not freeze to death will have him climbing Everest in no time.

12 Boys v Boomers lost 6 – 1
We welcomed the return of Alonso Gibbons from his 5 month jaunt around Europe, including some Camp Nou training and a month at the World Cup in Russia. Although a little jet-lagged he played a ripper.
This was another game that we fell victim to the ole rope a dope out the back manoeuvre.
When our backs played high up, they chipped over the top and won the foot race for most of their goals.
Even Brad running the line was challenged to keep up, so much so he snapped his hammy 10 minutes, thanks Ray Carty for taking over.
We dominated a lot of possession and one on ones in this game, which isn’t unusual, but were perhaps outmatched with the finishing touches.
This team is capable of greater things, and could really challenge in the finals if switched on.

Thirds v Boomers won 5 – 2
The Spurs ran out 5-2 winners on Sunday after starting strongly with many accurate shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, none of which went in. Boomers scored first, then we equalised through Denzel. It was a different game in the second half with Harry scoring a hat-trick and Denzel scoring again, though the opposition managed to get one back. There was some great attacking play which led to so many scooring opportunities and the defence was solid in nullifying the Boomers’ counter-attacks. Unfortunatley Will had to retire with an ankle injury so Zac took over as keeper. Overall a great game against an opposition who contained us to a draw last time. Thanks to Ben for running the lines.

Over 35s v Boomers won 10 – 0
Not since Germany’s 7-1 rout of Brazil in the 2014 World Cup has a side so comprehensively outplayed an opposition with pure football. With some key players out with various injuries (heart muscles, bruised man boobs, old age and various dislocations best not detailed) this could have been a banana skin game. Super coach Butsy put his faith in the players available and stuck with the fabled 3-4-3 formation which offers endless passing opportunities across the park. From the onset the 35s stroked the ball around and began creating opportunities. The first to take one was Platini who found himself on the end of a great team move and cross. Was it a hook turn? Was it an attempted steep-over? No it was a deft, elegant brush of the ball off both shins and past the stranded keeper. The pressure was released and the goals flowed. Kelvinho was lethal with 4, dragging his tired body towards the end of the season and probably Golden Boat. Well done Kel and keep up the magnesium. A very well taken header from Foxy, a brace to Neymar Harding (finally cleared by his myotherapist and hairdresser as OK to play), and the youngest member Doug got onto the sheet as well (and well deserved). So too finally did our leader Robby Tuksar tireless as usual, creating countless chances, but unusually squandering some golden opportunities in front, and eventually pulled by the coach, graciously giving way for Platini to return to the field to the roar of all 3 of his fans/family. But this wasn’t about the goal scorers this was about some great team goals- positive play, runs and passes into space, good communication, working for each other, closing down the opposition when losing the ball. There is still room for improvement and let’s try not to squander so many attempts on goals as we move to the business end of the season. (Wildinho will be back soon, it will all be OK). A special mention and thanks to the ressies and seniors who have been pushing us at training and making it seem easier on Sunday. Thanks to the walking wounded Coatesy for running the line. Thanks also to our opposition who tried hard and played in a great spirit. Keep up the effort at training gents, stay positive and take our chances in our remaining games and just like Croatia, maybe just maybe, we can make a run deep into the finals.

Reserve Ladies v Boomers won 6 – 1 (mid week catch up match)
An amazing game last Wednesday, with Sian making her debut. Our first half was high scoring with Laura, who had been setting up goals for everyone else in recent games, getting the first goal of the match. The goal scoring was shared in the first half, with Jess B, Anna and Bella getting one each, putting the ladies comfortably in front going into the second half.
The amazing defense by Millie, Caitie and Snowy also left Boomers desperate to get into the game in the second half. They got one chance, but Laura scored within minutes of their goal to let them know spurs ladies weren’t going to be defeated. Christie had an amazing game back after a couple weeks off. Jess A had a great game up front and Yas had an awesome game on the wing, taking on some very competitive girls. Sian also played a great first game, scoring off a cross from Jess B, to end the game 6-1.

Reserve Ladies v Boomers won 1 – 0
Another amazing game by the ladies. Laura continued her goal scoring streak, getting the first and only goal of the game. The awesome defense by Millie, Snowy, Shelby, Alesha and goal keeper Christie also meant that we had a clean sheet at the end of the game.
Congratulations to Ava on her stellar performance, making her debut for reserves, doing a beautiful job crossing the ball in and also challenging the keeper with some cracker shots on goal. We look forward to having you play for us again in future.
Yas had yet another great game. Bella, Anna and Jess A and B did well in the midfield, using their ball skills to again provide some excellent opportunities to score. Anna came closest, with a touch from the keeper meaning it rolled agonizingly slow across goals and just passed back post before being cleared. We had a few chances to score but unlike Wednesday we couldn’t quite find the back of the net. However, the overall teamwork and effort put in by all meant that we came out on top, moving us up the ladder to 3rd. Well done ladies, keep up the hard work!

11 Boys v Wangaratta won 3 – 2
Our backs were against the wall from the start. We were down 5 starting u/11s against the only team to beat us this year.
On the way to the ground we received the call that one more had fallen, Isaiahs thumbs were swollen from too much gaming, thus triggering a bout of acute asthma making him bed ridden.
Then Billy turned up, with his dad running him through some last minute fitness tests on his bung ankle.
He failed said tests. The game of chasey at his friends sleepover may just ended any hope of the winning the league.
But alas, the depth of junior talent at Spurs knows no bounds.
Enter Harry and Aiden from the u/9s Miniroos, Elisha from the u/11 girls and young Will “Gareth Bale” Hale from the u/10s.
We found the back of the net first, Aydan Castles crushing one from close range set the tone for the morning.
Wang equalised late in the first half by utilising the extraordinary amount of duck poo in the box to slip one out the back of our defences.
Our leaders stood up in the second half. Lenny and Cooper were outstanding with their ball control in the middle, Dustin was his usual reliable self in defence, and John has really taken off with some perfectly timed volleys off his shins and knees.
Coops eventually found the net twice more to seal our greatest win this century.(no exaggeration)
But the star of the show today was the smallest on the field. Will Hale, ducked and weaved and nuttied his way through the middle like the ball was on a string. He got the award for his efforts. So did Elisha, who’s run through the forwards all game really showcased her immense talents.
To say a win was important is an understatement.
To win against Wangaratta under such circumstances is an astounding effort.
The coach shed tears of joy.

12 Boys v Wangaratta lost 1 – 2
Again, a great effort from Spurs.
Very unlucky not to capitalise on some nice forward play but we probably were undermanned slightly in the midfield again falling foul to our U/11s playing a full game prior.
After watching the efforts of Mbappe, Pogba and Co. overnight, Cooper scored a “worldie” of his own from outside the box but it just wasn’t enough to get across the line.
Wangs goals were very lucky and totally reliant on the fact that young Ethan Haberfield can’t quite reach the cross bar. Cheeky by Wang.

Thirds Men v Wangaratta won 3 – 2
The Thirds had another win on Sunday and this has cemented our third place on the ladder. It wasn’t exactly a convincing win, at 3-2, but we did enough to get the points. We were a little lucky as each team managed an own goal but Harry and Jacob also scored. Will made a magnificent save, Ol did a somersault, Manny made a great pass to set up the goals and Mitch was unrelenting in the midfield. Great defensive work limited the opposition’s chances to attack. Well done, Spurs. And thanks to Helen for running the lines.

Reserve Ladies v Wangaratta won 3 – 1
A fantastic effort from the whole team led to a well-earned victory over Wangaratta. The girls went into the game with only 10 players and all worked hard together to keep Wangaratta at bay. It was in the first half that Yas had an opportunity to shoot at goal with enough force that the keeper only saved by deflecting it. Jess Briggs was ready for the rebound, however, and nut megged the keeper to score the first goal of the match. Wangaratta came back hard, but the stellar defense by Caitie, Millie and Kelly meant they had few opportunities to test our keeper. On the odd occasion when Snowy was challenged in goals, she cleaned up the ball every time, not giving Wangaratta the chance to score. The score was 1-0 at half time.
The second half the girls went in just as determined as the first, however an unfortunate goal by Wangaratta leveled the score. The fantastic ballwork by Anna, Bella, Jess B, Yas and Laura meant more opportunities at goal. Laura did an amazing job on the wing, supporting the defense and then providing some amazing crosses into goal. Yas was also crossing the ball in well, the second goal for Hotspurs coming from a cross from Yas. A defender was forced to try and block the ball, as Laura was right behind her ready to tap it in. Yas, however, did another powerful kick which meant the defender’s attempt was not enough, so the ball still bounced past the keeper for an own goal.
As Wangaratta tried to come back the defense from both the back line and midfield seemed to kick up a notch, the girls determined to keep the lead this time. Caitie, Millie and Kelly all prevented any serious threats on goal and were able to move the ball to the wings or midfield. Anna, Jess and Bella then used their skills with the ball to move the play out to the wings where Yas and Laura continuously made brilliant runs down the line and crossed it back in for shots on goal. It was on yet another amazing cross in that Bella was able to tap the ball into the back of the net, sealing our win. A fantastic effort all round, but we will be happy to have more players in future rounds.
