11 Boys v Albury United (last week) won 7 – 0
We showed all our supporters who get us to the ground at 8am that we aren’t just playing for a participation medal this year, we want back to back League trophies and the Cup!
It took us a while to get our groove on but with Dustin returning from a forced 2 week rest he was on fire in a dominant showing controlling our backline with Sam,Charlie and John. Ethan was solid once again, we have the best backline going around.Carl ,Billy and Josh were making great attacking plays so it was raining goals with Cooper and Lenny a lazy double each and Issy and Nick also finding the net.

However Zavier had the goal of the day , taking all the time in the world with a precision kick that rivalled the best penalty kicks of the World Cup. His smile was bigger than the soccer pitch for the rest of the game. Well done Zavier.

11 Boys v Albury City won 3 – 1
Another glorious day was had by all at Siberia, oops…. I mean Jelbart Park. The brain froze about there so here goes…
Some awesome moves from our boys with a special mention to Isiah for his sprinkler move at half time. A floss or two behind Brad’s back to keep our back line moving and entertained while the front line kept banging away at the Albury City’s goalie. A shout out to Albury City’s goalie Finn who saved his team from a bigger loss. Not to mention our awesome goalie Ethan who managed to NOT freeze into a frozen statue from lack of action. Spurs have done it again with a 3-1 win against Albury City.

12 Boys v Albury City won 5 – 1
On the 15th of July Hotspurs played in the cold, the wet the rain. it didn’t look good for them, but they made it after downing Albury city 5-1 it truly was a banger of a match! Captain Tyreece had led us to glory despite his complete air swing in the last game. But not this game, he kicked that ball like no ball had ever been kicked before, he kicked it so hard that not even Messi or Ronaldo could stop it. And Cooper scoring three goals, wow! Let’s not forget Lenny and Elisha scoring one goal each.

16 Boys v Albury City lost 1 – 2
The game was always going to be tough for the team. Both teams played very well and and fairly. We had a great start to the game, our attackers, midfielders and defenders played wonderfully. Our defenders did a great job pushing the opposing sides attackers and wing offside to prevent their attackers moving forward onto our 18 yard box. Our attackers did a great job to attempt to get a goal that they get a chance to take. At half time, the team lost focus and gave the opposing team an opportunity to score two goals early at the second half. Late at the second half, the team got the focus back and were able to score a goal making the scores 1 – 2.

Reserve ladies v Albury City won 2 – 1
This weekend was against one of the toughest teams to beat but the ladies did just that. Some beautiful ballwork from the get go out us in their half with a few opportunities to score. Laura and Yas both did a fantastic job on the wings and provided many chances, one of which Bella took advantage of to score the first goal of the game. Anna, Bella and Jess B kept the pressure on in midfield, restricting City’s movement while Catie blocked a lot of their attempts to pass through the backline. The fantastic defence in the mid field and back line meant that City couldn’t get too many balls through to the speed that had up front and when they did get through they were run down by Millie. An unfortunate penalty, however, in front of goals meant that City had a chance to score which they took full advantage of. 1-1 at half time, the ladies went into the second half with the same determination as the first. Kelly defended well at right back, while Shelby showed off defensive skill
on the wing and at left back. Snowy played a beautiful game as goal keeper in Christie’s absence. This left the forwards with plenty of time with the ball in City’s half. Alesha, Jess A and B, Bella, Yas and Laura worked with ball well, the excellent plays providing more opportunities to score. Jess A and B took what they’d practiced during the warm up and executed it well on field, Jess B setting up Jess A for another fantastic goal which put the ladies in the lead. The continued effort by all on the field meant that Albury City couldn’t recover and we went away with a well deserved win. Congratulations ladies!

12 Boys v United won 5 – 1
It was a case of Deja vu, dominating the play early only to succumb to a defensive mishap and go a goal down.
Anyone would forgive the team if they lay down from here on, for this has been a familiar site over the last month.
Another loss would be added to the dismal month of June, and perhaps find any finals aspirations floating away on the Jelbart Park fog clouds hovering over the pitch.
But not today, my friends, not today.
The 12 year olds boys, the senior crew on the pitch, were the ones that flew the flag, most of them holding onto the barest glimmer of hope that if they impressed management enough, maybe, just maybe it might free them up for an opportune Fortnite dance or two at training, without having the impost of running laps as payment for such a bizarre and extravagant form of entertainment.
Tyreece was the first of his kin that decided enough was enough. Through pure desperation (deceptively ignoring Habo’s orders), left his post at centre back for a Howard corner, and pulverized the ball with a volley of such a force that it damaged the back of the net. This in all such a stark contrast to his complete air-swing in the back half, which coincidentally was seconds prior to the opposition scoring the opener.
This act of leadership by the centreback became somewhat of a catalyst in the second half for the other 12s to mount a challenge for goal of the season.
After Cooper went for one of his usual twinkle toed jaunts through the top of the box his shot was parried, if not caught by the opposition, hand ball.
The referee awarded a penalty with haste, and most of the gallery thought one of the renowned strikers such as a Lenny, a Cooper or an Ashleigh might take the spot kick.
But alas, remembering the feats of his centrebacks earth shattering strike in the first half, Trae wanted a piece of the action, wrestling others out of the way demanding the ball be handed over.
Traes rocket curled into the top left corner would’ve made Messer’s Ronaldo and Messi choke on their decaf vanilla lattes at the Moscow airport on their way out of the World Cup.
Not only was strike overkill against the 3ft 9inch keeper, who was only taller than one person on the pitch (the ref), but the back-flip celebration had the sideline a gasp, hoping the landing wouldn’t have him on one of those Fail-Army YouTube clips or with permanent neck damage. He landed as if he was the neighbours tomcat being perfectly spun backwards off a one story balcony.
The action was not over.
Enter Louis, known from this day forth as Cluneinho.
Cluneinho was watching Traes gymnastic taunts from the cold pine of the visitors bench. He tore at Habo’s arm with a plea to allow him to topple his teammates extravagances at centre forward.
In the dying minutes Cluneinho was awarded his chance. One of many corners on the foggy and damp morning which saw Cooper place the water logged pill on a silver platter, some would say gift wrapped about eye-height for our athletic gazelle like striker ,who sat like a rooster would over a flock of hens, perched on the front post.
Cluneinho left the safety of the sandy, dewy grass of Jelbart Park 2, only to rise horizontally, a feat of such epicness, of such a height and angle that it would baffle the most ancient of Greek mathematicians.
Whilst horizontal, the great Cluneinho swung his right foot- clothed in his size 7 Nike golden boot- a volley of such timing and grace that the sound was like a thousand car boots slamming shut in sync around Dick Road. It curled with precision into the top corner of the goal just under of the near post. A WORLDIE was scored.
Cluneinho, aware of his efforts, shuffled his way back to the middle of the pitch with such arrogance and swagger, dodging the praise and high fives offered from his mere mortal team mates.
Goal of the season has been called early, it goes to Cluneinho.
Honorable mentions must go to our U/13 girls who are the glue in the fabric of this outfit, and the cogs within the gears of this juggernaut. Without their creative spark and aggressive bodywork such opportunities for these uncanny U/12 misfits would only be the stuff of dreams. Daisy, Tahlia, Ruby and Ashleigh, hats off to you.
Also we must mention our two other goal scorers Lenny and Cooper, their fine efforts in front of goal are sometimes taken for granted.
So what now for this footballing equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters?
Does this signify a one off? Or is this the turning point needed to see them grow into the players they idolise?
Can they go all the way like an U/12s version of a Leicester City FC circa 2016?
One thing is for certain, the entertainment they provide will bring the crowds back to local football.
Can’t wait for next week.

Thirds v United lost 1 – 2
This match was the final one for the Thirds’ top scorer, Bautista, who is returning to Argentina after a stint in Australia on a school exchange programme. Bautista fitted into the team beautifully and will be greatly missed. Unfortunately we couldn’t manage a win for his final game but the team did come back from a lack-lustre first half, where we were down two goals, to score once, and finish the game playing ferociously well. Fittingly, that single goal was by scored Bautista himself. All the best to you, Bautista. Thanks to John and Helen for running the lines.

Over 35s v United lost 1 – 3
Coming up against one of the competitions heavy weights in Albury United, it is a game that is always played with a touch more passion! But unfortunately it was another week with less than a full complement of players meant that everyone who was there was expected to give a 110% and they did. Mark Harrison return for his first match after a long lay off and finished a wonderful passage of team play that lead to the opening goal. Unfortunately United were able to get that goal back and another 2 late in the game to take the points. Our midfield was exceptional all day with a best on ground effort from Kelvin Davies and a injury hit Wayne Davies. Thank you to John Coates for running the line and we can’t wait to get our full team back on the park to have a run at the finals!

Reserves Men v United lost 0 – 5
The trip to Jelbart Park over the weekend was always going to be difficult and a bit emotional with young Bautii Ayarza playing his final game for us before departing back home to Argentina! Will Habberfield was thrown a call up into the goals and accepted with a fine debut and was our best on ground. Two of the other young players Harry Maher and Josh Gardiner also had fine games. Mick Corkett once again lead the midfield well but we just can’t seem to put the ball in the back of the net as easily as the opposition do. Unfortunately it finished as a 5-0 loss but there is growth and improvement amongst so many of the team. This weeks trip to Albury City won’t be any easier considering they are the league leaders but as usual, the boys will try!

PREMIER LEAGUE STAR TO TRAIN 11 GIRLS

South Melbourne Premier League star player Chelsea Blissett will be putting the U11 girls through some drills on Wednesday at training. Should be great for the girls as Chelsea is an Albury local who has lived and played in Sydney and now Melbourne all while still completing high school. South Melbourne are sitting top of the Victorian Premier League and set the standard for female football with several Australian Matildas in the squad.

12 Boys v St Pats lost 0 – 1
In the under 12s Hotspurs dominated in the first half but neither team were able to score. Hotspurs had plenty of shots thanks to Ben and Cooper, but none got past the keeper. There were excellent performances in all positions but an amazing performance from our midfield. Ruby was fast and won every contest on the ball. Lenny was reliable and strong in both defence and in attack. Trae showed some real finesse and gave the forwards every opportunity to score. Sadly even with our great players and Sams beautiful yellow card we had a loss with st pats scoring the winning goal with less than ten minutes to go. The awards were given to the very deserving Ruby and Trae.

16 Girls v St Pats won 11 – 0 and 7 – 1
A double header for the girls against St Pats both on Saturday and Sunday. The girls played well on Saturday and passed the ball well on a small pitch.
The girls won 11 nil with Ava scoring 7!! Award to Kate for being first to the ball every time. On Sunday the Under 16s started with 8 plyers as we waited for the rest of the team to arrive. The girls did extremely well and Georgia was awesome in goals. We went into the half 2-1 up and finished our game 7-1. Awards to Georgia for her goal keeping, Ciara for her work in defence, Ava for her goals and Keely for her work on and off the ball creating scoring chances and scoring a nice goal. Keep up the great work girls. A huge Thank you to Jonothan and Craig for running the lines. Also thanks to Rob for taking the girls for training over the last few weeks.

Thirds v St Pats won 2 – 0
Another win for the Spurs to cement their third placing on the ladder. The team played really well and the result didn’t quite reflect the dominance of their attack. Cody scored in the first half after a cross from Oliver and at the half-time break they were 1-0 up. The second and final goal came with the very last kick of the game – Denzel passed to Jacob S who booted it in. It was great to have Ray keeping again. The defence did a sterling job all game. Thirds were the duty team so thanks to all those who helped, especially Casper, Joel, Michael, Manny, Diahann and Harry M. And thanks to Harry N for running the lines.

Over 35s v St Pats lost 0 – 6
This is not how Hotspurs Winter was supposed to go. Boasting the AWFA’s best player, Wildinho, a phalanx of outstanding forwards and a coach with a fine record at the AWFA level, Hotspurs had hopes of going better than it did last season. So, what has gone wrong, and what can be done about it?
Does it make sense to put all of the blame on the coach?
In his post match news conference on Sunday, Irvine could barely raise his eyes to face his interrogators. On half a dozen occasions, maybe more, he made it clear that only one person should take responsibility for the fact that Hotspurs was now on the brink of elimination.
“Had I set things up differently, they might have turned out much better,” he said. “I probably did not understand the match as I should have.”
Irvine made mistakes, without question, in terms of player selection, in terms of tactics, in terms of preparation. Following their loss last game, Hotspurs players only had two training sessions to get used to the system Irvine introduced for the game against St Pats, the most dangerous opponent in Hotspurs group. It looked it, too: against St Pats, Hotspurs had a defense left exposed, a midfield that was overrun, and an attack that was blunted.
There was an emotional failure, too. Irvine’s style has always relied a little on organized chaos. Against St Pats, though, cooler heads were required, particularly after falling behind in such unexpected circumstances, on a goalkeeping blunder. Irvine did nothing to help. He threw on attacking players seemingly at random, with little apparent design and to no obvious end. He proved incapable of thinking his way out of the problem.
Maybe, in hindsight, he would have done better. In 13 games as coach of Hotspurs, Irvine has used 13 lineups, and a total of 19 players. He has never given an impression that he knows what he wants this team to be, or who — beyond Wildinho — he wants to be in it. There was no plan B, to be used in an emergency, because he had not yet settled on plan A.
So, if it’s not all Irvine’s fault, it must be Wildinho’s?
Before we get to that, let’s make one thing abundantly clear: Wildinho does not need to win the leqgue and cup to have a case to be the greatest player of his era, or even of all time.
The logic that only League and Cup winners could be true greats is an antiquated one. It was true enough when it was only on that stage that the very best on the planet regularly encountered each other: a time when Pelé spent his entire career on one side of the Atlantic, and when Maradona played only a handful of European Cup games in his career.
It is not true now, given that we have the AWFA O35s League, and Wildinho can face his peers over and over again, from September until April or May. That is the stage where greatness is bestowed, and Wildinho has shone on it often enough certainly to be one of the two finest players of the 21st century.
Whether he’s better than Cristiano Ronaldo — and whether either of them are better than Pelé, Maradona, Johan Cruyff or anyone else — is, more than anything, a matter of personal taste, but it should not be determined by whether he has won a Cup or not.
Wildinho, though, does not seem to see it that way. There has been a longstanding, and now somewhat clichéd, allegation that he does not deliver for his club, one that somehow managed to linger.
Even more hackneyed is the idea that he does not care, that because he has spent so much time away from Hotspurs that he somehow lacks the requisite passion to represent his club.
His behavior in the last week or so should expose that thinking as flawed: the stress was evident as he stood for Hotspurs anthem at Kelly Park; he had avoided a family barbecue at Hotspurs training facility in Albury in the days preceding the game, preferring to stay alone in the room he shares with Foxinho.
Even before that, his determination to do something for his club — to win the Cup, to cement his greatness — was clear. Wildinho volunteered to change his own role so as to enable Irvine to make more use of the likes of Eddie,Foxinho and Coatesy. He has made tactical suggestions, too, to try to improve the team. In some lights, perhaps that looks like the sort of egocentrism more associated (rightly or wrongly) with his great rival, Ronaldo. In others, it is a veteran player, one of the best of all time, desperate to succeed.
Perhaps he is inhibited by the pressure, crushed by the weight of his club’s expectations, and his own. That seems unlikely: he is well used to performing under pressure.
Perhaps, then, as Irvine said, the flaws in the rest of the team “cloud” Wildinho’s abilities, and prevent him from shining in the way that Ronaldo can for Portugal. His brilliance cannot disguise the shortcomings of the others.
Wait, what? This is a team with Coatesy, Eddie,Tuksar, Davies, White Dog and the rest: Wildinho’s teammates are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Are they really that bad?
There are two issues here. One is psychological: all of those players rank among the best in the world in their positions at club level, but they have long seemed totally dependent on Wildinho for Hotspurs.
Against Twin City and St Pats — and for years now — it was striking how few of them seemed willing to try to ease the burden on him. Too often, Hotspurs plan seems to be to funnel the ball to Wildinho and hope for the best. It almost worked 12 months ago, but much of the time it makes the team predictable, and easily contained.
St Pats, for example, deployed Marcelo Brozovic to shut down Wildinho. He did his job extremely well — Wildinho did not have a shot until the 64th minute, and made just 15 passes in the first hour — but, more tellingly, none of Wildinho’s teammates was able to take the reins. If Wildinho is not firing, Hotspurs does not seem capable of coping. The rest of the players are diminished in his presence.
The other issue is that Hotspurs squad is almost comically front-loaded. That signifies two issues: one is that Irvine can not, realistically, squeeze all of it into the same team. No system could adequately accommodate Platini, Coatesy, Eddie and Wildinho, let alone the likes of the Irish pair Larry and Aid. Sometimes, having that many choices can be paralyzing: it may be that the richness of his resources is what has left Irvine so indecisive.
The other, more serious, issue is what that abundance of attacking choices says about the team’s defense. There is a valid question over whether the midfield Hotspurs is capable of playing the way Irvine desires — the intense, high-pressing style that has brought him so much success.
In effect, Hotspurs strength is all in one place; too much of the rest of the team is a wasteland.
This is the key issue, the one that has trapped Hotspurs below the waterline, and the one the club must start to address if its time in the AWFA wilderness, at least trophy-wise, is to come to an end.
Players leave for Retirement too young, stunting their development at the crucial moment as they hit 50, energies are directed toward identifying attacking phenomena, rather than the painstaking work of educating defenders.
There is a lack of scheming midfielders, too, a byproduct of what might be called the Bielsa Orthodoxy: the intense, hard-running style of play of Ian Belgre, Irvine’s mentor, is now so widespread in Hotspurs that players capable of stopping and thinking are in short supply.
Hotspurs soccer used to be defined by what they call pausa: a playmaker’s ability to wait for the exact moment to play a pass. There is no pausa in Hotspurs O35 soccer any more. The game against St Pats was the perfect example: all running, no thinking, an advertisement for a team that has lost its way.

11 Girls v Diamonds won 4 – 0
The girls travelled to La-Trobe to take on Diamonds. Unfortunately Diamonds turned up with 9 players which meant we had 6 on the bench which makes it difficult to get a flow to the game due to the huge amount of substitutions. The Spurs girls however again took the points with a hard fought 4-0 win. Another slow start by the girls and went into the break 1-0 up. A nice goal to Rylee got the team started. The second half was much improved with the team moving the ball out wide and some nice crosses hitting their marks and allowing spurs to grab some nice goals. Alice grabbed the award this week after playing a great game out on the wing and slotting 2 goals. Isla also grabbed a goal after making her debut in the centre of the midfield. Seanna and Eloise had strong games at the back stopping any attacking move Diamonds tried. Ava and Poppy both had a half in goals and were great keeping a clean sheet again.
No game this weekend we have a Bye.

16 Girls v Twin City won
On a very cold chilly wet morning the girls started in the first time slot of the day! We passed the ball around well and created many scoring chances.
Goals were shared around the team and some very nice goals scored. Special mention to Ava who finished with 9. A super team effort from defenders to midfield to our forwards and not to forget our goal keepers Lilly and Grace who braved the cold. The girls rotated positions and continued to pass the ball to feet. Keep up the great work as we face a double header this week. Well Done girls.

11 Boys v Twin City won 4 – 0
Apart from the glacial conditions this was a cracking game and another superb dominant performance.
With a couple of players our sick or injured this week the whole team was able to gel together to get the job done.
Great game by Lenny and Carl in the middle, and a welcome return from Billy, who scored our second goal with a ripper strike from range. Ethan was bored and cold most of the game, however when he was needed he made a couple of remarkable saves and got an award for his efforts. The score could’ve been more it if Coopers radar had been on target, look out teams when it is.
Keep it up boys, a great start to the season, a bye next week, but those boys who play up will relish the extra energy in their legs.

A shame we lost this one to be honest. We dominated the play in the first half of the game. Some blistering runs up front from Cooper and Ashleigh and some fancy footwork from Ruby and Tahlia had us dominating the contest. But when those weary and water logged legs of the U/11s started to kick in the oppositions pace took over. If it weren’t for some handy clean-up work from Al and Sam, and some neat saves by our keeper Ethan ‘De Gea’ Haberfield then there could’ve been more against.
The key to our best games is having fresh legs on the players that play two games.
This week our 11s have a bye, so look out St Pats.

Over 35s v Twin City lost 1 – 3
We started very well and were moving the ball around with precision to create an early chance, Wildinho’s shot was well saved by their keeper. More chances came our way but we needed one more pass to a team mate in a better scoring position rather than shooting from distance.
Then we gave away a silly free kick and also jumped in on a tackles and found our selves 2 down at half time.
We battled away in the second half and eventually captain Kel found his true shooting distance, poking the ball in from 4 yards and the game was back on.
Wildinho who was dragged for missing his chances in the first half, came back on with a new determination and was unlucky not to have equalised after his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce on or behind the line but the tech at Twin City didn’t confirm it had crossed for the goal.

Late in the game another defensive error was capitalised on by them and we were unable to make any more headway on the scoreline.

This year the senior group have developed a NEW club Senior polo $30 and jacket $35.
The club has decided to keep some stock of these to be available for purchase on home games at the ground (New WOW hat $15 and club neckties $25 will also be available).

The Hotspurs Club Coaching Panel has been formed, and consists of the following members of the club, John Belgre, Robert Tuksar, John Irvine, Matt Townsend and Fiona Smith.

From time to time there will be some useful information posted here for our coaches.

Coaches can also utilise the Coaching Panel for help, with any aspect of coaching. It’s an experienced, and great group, to assist those wishing to develop their coaching and ultimately the teams performances.

Match Reports

11 Girls v Albury United won 5 – 0
It was a slow start by the girls who found themselves under pressure early in the game, but eventually the girls started to fire up.
Rylee got the ball rolling with a nice finish, while some nice leadup work from Elisha who crossed to Chelsea who calmly slotted a great goal got the game moving. Elisha was brought down outside the box, which meant she could line up for one of her trademark free kicks. A dipping shot over the wall which hit the underside of the crossbar was unstoppable and brought the crow to their feet. Ryle slotted another classy goal to go to the break 4 up. A few positional changes were made in the second half, with Isla causing all sorts of mayhem down the right side playing from right back. Isla and Mia combined beautifully to leave the defense hapless on many occasions. Ryle managed to snag another goal to claim a hattrick and the game ended up 5-0. Seanna played another strong game both as centre back in the first half and then up front later in the game. Lucy also played out of her skin and was in everything. It was great to see a couple of great goals from crosses, goes to show the training is starting to pay off. Plenty of awards handed out this week, Urban Graze burgers went to Lucy, Chelsea, Isla and Taylor while Mia picked up the Mad Mex meal award. No training this week – enjoy the break.

13 Girls v Myrtleford won 13 – 2
A gallant 10 players took to the field and played against 1. We passed the ball around well
and created many scoring chances. Lily played well off her line in the first half and Georgia did a great job in the second half in goals.
We went to 8 players as two went down with tackles but they came back on and battled out the game- well Done Keely and Tahlia for your courage.
Ash and Ruby chased every ball down and Our defenders, Alex, Bella and Sophie held the line well. Daisy pumped the arms and legs and chased the ball down throwing the head backwards and smiling all the way. Goals were shared around. Awards to Ash for her awesome chasing and 3 goals and ruby who we welcomed back into the team and created many scoring chances. A great effort from the girls who play so well as a team!! Thanks Ava for running the line. Enjoy the week off- Thanks again to Rob for training the girls during the week.

11 Boys v Myrtleford won 2 – 0
Best game of the year. Myrtleford have steadily been moving their way up the ladder with some big wins against some quality opposition.
The boys took that on board and wanted to put on a strong display in their last game on the road.
They did that, and dominated the contest. A truer reflection on the score board would’ve been 6-0, hitting the cross bar at least 7-8 times and having the ball about 70% in our possession. Cooper, Lenny, Isaiah and Carl moved the ball with precision through the middle, and also dominated the physical contests with a somewhat bigger opposition. Josh and Aydan powered home the goals with some very skilful strikes. Nick and Murray moved into different positions and didn’t look out of place. Charlie was a leader in defence and will wear the Captains arm band against Twin City.
Everyone did their job for the team. I’m very proud of the boys.

12 Boys v Myrtleford lost 0 – 4
Again, a score-line that doesn’t reflect the true nature of the contest. We had a lot of the ball but limited opportunities when going forward.
When playing a tough opposition in both grades it really does muster challenges in the fitness of some of our U/11 boys who play 2 games.
Ethan played a cracking game in goals as always, after hardly touching it in the 11s. Tyreece and Ben showed great leadership, using their size to help out their smaller team mates in the contest. Ruby played a cracking game in the midfield, after suffering a suspected broken arm midweek, made a Lazarus like recovery.
Our forward deficiencies are something that can be worked on and improvement in that area will hold us in good stead against the better sides.
