Presidents Report

Our final home game of the season was played on a classic muddy Aloysius Park. It’s fitting that we should tear up the pitch before it has a well overdue resurfacing in the coming months. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite match it with Boomers in the Seniors but were more than competitive in all games over the day.
The first practice game of All Abilities was played on Lambert Park with Charlotte Ercil from Football NSW coming along to oversee the game against United. There was a huge crowd watching and all involved had a great time. There will be an All Abilities game held on Grand Final day 15^th September at Jelbart Park. This will be the launching pad for a fixtured competition next year of hopefully 4-5 clubs. Again, thanks to Aidan Kilroy, Diahann and Harry Maher, Loz Bonacci and Dwayne Day for all of your assistance to make this a special moment for all involved.

Grand Final Day duties – 15^th September
Every couple of years all clubs are obliged to assist with the Grand Final day catering and setting up. This year we are partnered with Boomers and will be running the BBQ, Canteen and Bar. This is a challenge to organise but it does represent a great fundraiser for the club.
All we are asking for is 1 hour of your time to help the club. Whether that be turning a sausage on the BBQ or serving in the canteen. 25-30 volunteers throughout the day will get the job done. Please contact myself, Gary Kavanagh or Dwayne Day to help out.

Regional Coaching conference

FNSW and FV together have agreed to hold a Regional Coaching conference in Albury on Saturday 22nd February 2020. Time 9am to 3.30/4.00 pm, its open to coaches of all levels and for advanced level coaches, the day will carry 30 points toward their 4 yrs. renewal.
In this regard, it is propose there will be an offer of a community goalkeeping licence on the Friday night (3hrs +2 more on the Saturday 4-6). On the Sunday- it is proposed to offer a workshop for advanced level coaches , which would carry additional points- approx. 3 hrs.
On the Saturday- topics to be covered include:
1. Technique- passing, receiving, striking, heading etc..
2. Small sided football-
3 Goalkeeping session incorporating shooting (Jim Fraser)
4. Attacking in the forward third.
5. Defensive structures
6. Tactical applications 11v 11- how do we adjust to opposition changes.
Lunch will be provided as will unlimited bottled water.
Cost for the day will be $70.

Junior Presentation 24 August

The junior presentation will be held on Saturday 24 August at Aloysuis Park, 1pm to 4pm.
All players from mini-roos up to the sixteens will be rewarded for their efforts this year.
There will be BBQ and drinks for all by a gold coin donation.
There will be a jumping castle and face painter on the day.
Reminder. Parents please return your child’s playing strip on this day. Your child will be issued with a new strip next year.

Div.1 Men v Boomers lost 1 – 7

We were outclassed today by a very well polished structured outfit who took almost every chance they were given. Only real highlight was our goal which was really well done with Jacob Schreiber coming down the right putting in a nice low cross for Harrison Heath to finish off nicely. Jon Cochrane despite all the goals had another solid game and continue his fine form over the last month.

13 Boys v Boomers lost 1 – 5

Second on the ladder, Boomers are a tough opponent, and like many times before, we were able to stick with them for most of the game. We had more opportunities in the first half but couldn’t capitalise. Daisy snuck in a ripper strike at the start of the second half, which made us square, but from then on they managed to beat us with speed in defence, which is something we can work on for the finals. Great games from Al and Darcy up front and Sam had a great one in defence.

12 Boys v Boomers won 14 – 0

Today we met an undermanned Boomers outfit. Although the scores reflect a very one sided game, I was happy that the team were not too selfish in their approach and played the ball in the passing game that we train for. We rotated our players that play multiple games to give all others extra time on the field.
Great to see Billy, Josh and Isaiah hitting the target at the right time of the season. Building nicely for the finals.

12 Girls v Melrose won 3 – 0

A great team effort from all the girls in very cold and soggy conditions. The Spurs dominated possession with impressive team play across the park – probably their best for the year.
Some match highlights – Rylee’s classy ball skills and adept passes putting teammates into space, Isla seemingly popping up wherever the ball was and controlling the midfield, and Elisha’s individual efforts leading to a couple of spectacular goals – one a left foot cracker.
A great result for the girls. Goals to Rylee and Elisha (2).
Big thanks to Ava and Seanna for being in goals – another clean sheet.
Special mention and awards go to Isla, Elisha, Rylee and Sophia for their impressive contributions during the match. Thanks to House of Trends, Urban Graze and Muffin Break for providing the awards.

Presidents Report

On Sunday we were in Wodonga playing Heart. Most teams had some great results but the greatest came from our U/14 girls who not just had another great victory but have now secured enough points to win the League title. Great work Fiona Smith, Narelle Tuksar and team, indeed a proud moment for the club. Congratulations.
This week we host Boomers in our last home game of the year. Hopefully the weather is kind to us and we get a blockbuster crowd. All games are fixtured to be played on the main Aloysius Park ground before it is scheduled to be resurfaced over the next few months. Get along and watch, it promises to be a cauldron like atmosphere, and rumour has it Gary has got something special cooking in the canteen.

Chocolate fundraiser
Thanks to our members who sold/purchased their boxes of chocolates during our fundraiser. As we endeavour to keep our registration fees as low as possible, the amounts we raise from fundraisers like these go towards things such as the strips the teams wear, the balls and goals we train with, the lease on the facilities and also the trophies they receive at the end of the year presentation. Like most clubs, we are not-for-profit and rely on these finances for the everyday functioning of the club that all players and members enjoy. Thanks again all involved.

On the weekend we heard the great news of one of our former junior stars Alec Mills being selected in the U/18 Young Socceroos team.
Alec -the son of club legend Darrel- played his junior football at Spurs before moving to MUFC and recently playing with the Melbourne City NPL team. Congratulations on this fine effort Alec, this is something all our junior footballers can aspire to. We wish you luck on the world stage.

Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Heart won 3 – 1

Wasn’t the most pretty performance but we got the job done and three more points in the bag. We will have improve a lot against a strong Boomers team this weekend in our last home game of the season. Goals to Jon Cochrane, Luke Dahl and Ben Gardiner.   

Div.2 Men v Heart won 4 – 2

Well it finally happened, the team got what they deserved and had a win! As we have said before, the boys have been playing some very good football without getting a result and it was nice to see the boys with a smile and hear them belt out the song! No one could be faulted on the day, as has been the case for the last 6 weeks as we dominated possession and tried to stem the flow of some interesting penalties. We also had the privilege of having our 16 fresh and ready to fire. Next week will bring us back for the last home game of the season against 6^th place Boomers, hopefully we can score an upset!

Div.2 Women 

Over 35s v Heart won 2 – 0

Was this the start of the road to redemption for a deflated figure in Wildhinio to resurrect his failing striking career? The gaffer had sent out the team formation just hours before the kick off in an attempt to make sure Heart didn’t get word of the team or more importantly, the positional change for the promised one. There was a hush over the crowd in the realisation that Wildhinio had been sent back up front in an attempt to break the curse of Loz and hopefully get his name in lights, as he and his brainwashed children can only see. Gaz thought he was seeing double with the amount of strikers in front of him and his warm up delivered what could only be deemed and an inspiration to the lads on the bench, thinking he won’t last 5 minutes. The we dictated the game from the start with marauding runs, crosses and shots going, just wide, hitting the post or picking out the keeper. While Heart got us on the counter attack and forced the human beard into a couple of nice saves. At half time we were urged not to let this one slip after such domination and then finally the great one stood up to be counted, T-Bone. Winding back the clock and scoring a brace he finally broke the shackles of being in the shadow of Wildhinio. Whitedog and Loz worked tirelessly in the back and carried the defensive efforts well. Thanks to Scotty for taking one for the team and sitting out and also running the line. We have moved up to 6^th and have a bye this week before taking on the might St Pats in our next encounter.

A huge congratulations to the Under 14 girls who on the weekend wrapped up the league and finished on top of the ladder with only 1 loss for the season.
Each and everyone of the girls has played an important part to this result and they should feel very proud of their achievements. We now head into a row of Byes before finals so will have to make sure we train hard and keep focused on making the Grand Final. The girls absolutely loved running off through a tunnel of reserve woman and Parents. Awards to Elise who scored an absolute cracking goal- her first goal!! and Mya who volunteered to play keeper second half and also scored a great goal. A massive thanks to all the parents who support each week. A great bunch of girls, keep working for the finals girls and play as a team.

13 Boys 

12 Boys v Heart lost 1 – 2

We always expected a tough clash with Heart, they have a couple of outstanding juniors.
They got on the board twice early in the first half with some slick individual efforts. In the second half we were dominant but missed out on scoring until the last minute where Lenny cracked home a ripper in the box. With a couple of defensive tweaks I can see a huge improvement if we meet them again.
Across the park everyone had a much better second half with highlights from Nic down the right side of the midfield and Murray at centre back both getting the weekly awards.

Presidents Report

On Friday night we held our annual Spurs Trivia night. Around 120 people attended and had a ripper night with the over 35s table coming out slender victors. From all the feedback, everyone had a great night. Thanks to our MC Mick “Tony Barber” Corkett for doing another professional job with the questions and another huge thankyou to all our sponsors and donors for the grand amount of prizes and donations.

On Sunday the club played at Latrobe against Diamonds. There were some terrific results across the board and the seniors keep their finals dream alive with a dominant 0-2 win. This game marked the end of the line for a great club servant Paul Kinning. Kinno came to Spurs from Heart in 2014 and played numerous games in our senior lineups. Not only was Paul a great senior player but was also integral in the coordination of the Miniroos over the last 4-5 years. Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Diamonds won 2 – 0

We were a bit flat in this game but still managed to get the result in the end. We had a number of chances to take the lead with Luke Dahl, Ben Gardiner and Harry Heath failing to finish. It was only the last 15 mins we really started to click and thats when the late goals were scored. Jacob Schreiber with a well placed finish to open the scoring and then Harry Heath with an excellent pass from Ben Gardiner sealed the result with his first goal of the season. It was also the farewell game of our beloved central defender Paul Kinning who is off to China with his family. All the best Paul on your next adventure and thank you for all you’ve done for our club.

 

Div.2 Men v Diamonds drew 0 – 0

It was another fantastic effort on the weekend and a massive turnaround from the first time we played them. Once again the boys played their positions and heart out but just couldn’t find a way past the keeper, the dodgiest ground in the association and some interesting decisions. Brandon once again held his head high and led the backline, we were treated with a guest appearances from Nabbe and Townie(well for a few minutes anyway) and Zac and Alex worked tirelessly up front. The belief is there and the squad is getting stronger each week and we just need to get a win for the efforts.

 

Div.2 Women v Diamonds won 15 – 0

From the onset it was a dominant display by the Ladies against an undermanned Diamonds Team.
Goals started to accumulate quickly and it was 10-0 at half time. The Ladies played a great style throughout the game and continue to develop their passing game and put their training drills into play on the field. Passages of play were a pleasure to watch and it is great to see the team enjoying their matches. The result saw the team sneak into 3^rd position, however a tough game this weekend with a few players out, will really test the team.
Goal scorers were, Ava 6, Jess 4, Bella 1, Formosa 1, Laura 1, Bree 1 and 1 own goal.

 

Over 35s v Diamonds drew 0 – 0

After a triumphant effort on Friday night at the trivia night, the boys had to get their emotions and celebrations in check to play an improved Diamonds outfit. We arrived and had noticed that the curators had worked hard on the main pitch to get a mix between a beach volleyball court and a subcontinent green wicket! Such is the trust that the association has for our completion, they even allocated us to play with a club ref and club linesmen (thanks Kel) and usual this game was a pulsating encounter with plenty of advice being offered from both teams on how the game was being played. Both teams had their chances but the deadlock couldn’t be broken. Aido was welcomed back onto the sidelines to run the squad and was even offered praise by the oppositions forward. Unfortunately for us we just couldn’t squeeze on past the keeper and thankfully for us Rob didn’t squeeze one past Butsy. The whole team played well and the subs made valuable contributions, Coatsy wound back the years in the midfield role! We are in a real dogfight for the 4^th/5^th position and will now play one week on, one week off until the finals. This draw still has us in 7^th and we have a bye this week.

14 Girls v Diamonds won 2 – 0

A great game and good result for the Under 14 girls who continue to battle it out for top spot on the ladder. It was great to have a bench this week and we were well supported by the Under 12 girls. The girls played well and created many scoring chances up front. Our defence were amazing with everyone playing well.
A great team effort. Awards to Lil(House of trends) for her Goal keeping, Rylee for a great goal and her work up front(Muffin break),
El for great defending all game(Muffin Break) and Alex for leading the defenders(Hungry Jacks). Keep up the great work girls!!

 

13 Boys v Diamonds won 5 – 1

Our passing game in the first half was as good as it has been all year. Daisy, Ruby and Alonso all linking up and setting up Cooper for a colossal 4 goal haul in the first half. Ben also managed to beat the keeper for a fine goal. The second half was a little less consistent with a few of our players feeling fatigued on the boggy pitch and our scored stayed on 5 with 2-3 goal opportunities being deemed offside.
Huge improvements were made this week from Al and Paras at right and left back, this is a good sign for when we play a strong Myrtleford side this week.

12 Boys v Diamonds won 5 – 1

Its was great to see the U/12s putting some consistent and polished performances together. Will, Cooper and Lenny setting up opportunities with great ball control and smart distribution. Nick also played great football down the right midfield, sending in a few dangerous crosses.
Billy and Will both scoring a brace and Carl scoring from a tight angle. Hopefully we can see the same consistency next week against Myrtleford.

12 Girls v Diamonds won 1 – 0

A tough and nail biting game for Coach and fans to watch, but a last minute goal to Elisha secured the result for the Spurs for a 1-0 nil deserved win.
The Spurs dominated possession throughout the match and a bolstered defensive line and effort meant the bulk of the game was spent in the attacking half. Alice and Rylee made some impressive runs, but the highlight was the team effort across the park – the Spurs wanted the ball more than their opposition. The dominant possession led to numerous chances on goal, but with the opposition flooding the defence it made scoring difficult.
Coach Wild masterly pushed Elisha forward in the dying minutes to secure the win with a fantastic strike.
Another great result for the girls – the result maintains their position on top of the ladder.
Big thanks to Ava and Sophia for being in goals. (the girls were so dominant, neither goalie touched the ball).
Special mention and awards go to Bianca, Lucy and Taylor for their impressive contributions during the match. Thanks to House of Trends and Muffin Break for providing the awards.

Presidents Report

For those players and supporters that braved the subzero temperatures and horizontal rain, the trip to Kelly Park was a memorable one. There were some very strong results from undermanned line-ups. Our Div 2 Ladies team destroyed the side formerly above them on the ladder; our U/12s reversed their first round result and showed a powerful form turn around; and our Senior Men were 5 starting players down this week and kept their final chances alive with a brilliant performance taking the full 3 points. Well done those players that stepped up to the challenge.

I also have to mention the gutsy performance from the U16 girls who had to start their game in the height of the storm. A different type of courage girls, well done, and another great victory.

I’m sure those that are attending the annual trivia night this Friday have been reading encyclopaedias and watching old episodes old Sale of the Century in anticipation. It will be a cracking nights entertainment.

This Sunday we are away at Latrobe University grounds to play Diamonds. They are always a fierce rival across all grades.

Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Twin City won 2 – 1

The  Senior Men continued their improved form to record an excellent win at Kelly Park. This was a good team performance with all players contributing greatly on the day. Luke Dahl was a standout by getting a brace of goals.The defence of Harry Maher, Manny, Paul Kinning and Will Clifton were really strong but they were assisted by all team members who were willing to work hard to pressure the opposition  when they were in possession. Well done and lets continue to keep our standards at a high level.

 

Div.2 Men v Twin City lost 1 – 8

We knew Twin City were going to be hard to stop on their home soil and this proved to be true. Unfortunately, they just simply were able to put the ball in the back of the net easier than we could. We created a number of chances and had a missed penalty again and we continued to fight hard until the final whistle. Thank you again to the young brigade for filling in, Townie for taking the team until half time and it was nice to have Zac back again in goals. This weekend see us playing a Diamonds team that is one position higher than us on the ladder in a must win encounter.

 

Div.2 Women 

 

 

 

Over 35s v Twin City lost 0 – 7

Unfortunately Sundays match showed us how far we are away from the top teams. As they had done in our previous encounter, Twin City just kept on coming in attack and were scoring at ease through a mix of great goals and poor goal keeping. Unfortunately, try as we did, we really didn’t force their keeper into any meaningful saves. In saying that, we did work hard for the whole match, thanks to Loz for playing when he probably shouldn’t have, Whitedog for moving things around to get to the game, Kel for running the line / Subs and hopefully our season has been derailed with the injury to the enigmatic Wildhinio. Our next game is against a fired up Diamonds who will be looking for revenge after our win in the first half of the year.

16 Girls v Twin City won 5 – 2

The 16 Girls were missing a few from their regular line up but went into the game with confidence. The girls made every effort to be first to the ball the whole game, made smart passes in the wet weather and kept pressing in attack. They were rewarded with 5 spectacular goals, which included a hat trick from Ruby. It was great to have Ava this week who provided strength and guidance in defense and attack, special mentions go to Hayley who was strong in defense and first to the ball every time and Elyse who showed great control of the ball when moving the ball out of the backline.

13 Boys v Twin City drew 3 – 3

Im not sure if it was the subzero temps, or the fact that we were playing someone we dominated last time, we just didn’t come to play today. We were missing star players Alonso and Keely, which meant our centre back Lenny had to play in the middle with Cooper, both of which had already played big games just prior in the 12s.
Charlie played a great game, filling in for the absent John. Thanks Charlie.
Ruby and Daisy had their usually solid performances, with Ruby scoring a brace and Daisy covering numerous positions.
Everyone suffered under the cold conditions, and we know we can perform far better than this and will step up this week against Diamonds.

12 Boys v Twin City won 1 – 0

The boys had their training this week in Shepparton at the Maccas Cup. They played against the Shepparton and Bendigo Rep squads as well as a Shepparton Club team. Smaller fields, bigger opposition, faster passing, and little banter and comradery on the bus.
I reckon it was the perfect preparation for Twin City, who beat us in the first round and were in line to push for the league title. That dream was all but snuffed out in what I believe to be one our better performances of the year. Will Hale really dominated in left midfield cracking the only goal of the game, with help from the Carl and Cooper setting up a lot of play. Wildy was put in left back in Sams absence and put in a steller performance with nothing getting past. Nick was also solid down the right side.
If we keep stringing these great performances together, we may be able to push deep into the finals.
