Presidents Report
It’s great to be underway for season 2019, albeit with some mixed results on the pitch, we have had a successful start to the season.
You may hear me echo the words throughout the year, “Many hands make light work”, I believe the heart and soul of any community based club starts with its volunteer base.
When all parents, supporters and players do their extra little bit each week, it makes for a better club culture which is a pathway to future club success. Whether it be our former President and current Vice President Ian Belgre, who is still the first and last to leave the ground each week and has worked tirelessly for decades, Greg Harrison who was the boss of our Canteen for many years on end, Jack Maher cooking breakfast burgers each week, or whether it be Dwayne Day who has volunteered his services as our weekly line marker for season 2019, successful clubs cannot function without the efforts of such people.
This week I’d like to pay special tribute to Phil and Viv Barrett, who over the last week have scrubbed and cleaned our canteen to a standard that is fit of a surgical ward. Phil and Viv have no more investment in the club than being great supporters and club parents over decades, but still feel obliged to selflessly offer their time for the betterment of the club. Thanks Phil and Viv.
This week we host Albury United, it’d be great to see huge numbers on the hill in support of our senior teams. It was a great atmosphere on Sunday albeit a little hot. Our very young senior side showed a lot of fight and some great signs for future success.

Div.2 Men v Cobram won 2 – 1
A hot, muggy day greeted the new look 2019 Reserves side for the clash against a notoriously hard Cobram on the weekend. This game had us welcoming new faces Luke Hillas, Brandon Vescio and Zac Burhop to the club and a returning former junior, Alex Brouwer for their first games and the young juniors Harry Carmody, Toby Lewis and Aiden Greaves playing reserves after games earlier in the morning. In a turnaround from last year, we actually started the game very well and played very good team football to lead up to the first goal which Brandon slotted calmly. That goal flicked the switch for Cobram and they started applying more pressure over the park and had a goal disallowed but we lifted again, with Zac Burhop finding the back of the net. Cobram were desperately unlucky not to have clawed one back just before half time after having the ball come off both uprights and not going in. At half time assistant coach John Belgre stressed the complacency of a 2 goal buffer and what can happen with that score line. The second half was end to end action with Cobram scoring from a belter of a set free kick with around 15 minutes to go but Spurs kept pushing all over the park. Well done to the whole team and a great result to come out on top with the 2-1 win which has us sitting 6th on the ladder.

16 Boys v Cobram won 4 – 3
The first round of the 2019 season was kicked off with an outstanding win from the Under 16’s. The boys managed to come back from a 3 nil deficit to win 4-3.
Tomoki scored another amazing hat-trick and Dawson also chipped in with a goal of his own. The whole team showed their high level of ability and determination which led to the win. Harrison had a great day in goals and with the help of the defense managed to keep the Cobram attack scoreless in the second half.
Special mention to Will who broke his wrist not even a third of the way into the match, get well soon!
All in all, it is looking like a promising season lies ahead for the under 16’s.

14 Girls v Cobram won 6 – 0
A great start to our season with the Under 14s playing well. We passed the ball around well and held possession which was great to see. Goals were shared around as a team. We welcome Elise and her family to Spurs, she played really well as did all the girls. Thanks to Bella who was our Club ref for the day and to Justin for running the line, we really appreciated it. Also thanks to the Under 12 girls who will be regulars in our team this season. Keep up the great work as we tackle United this week.
13 Boys v Cobram lost 1 – 6
A difficult start to the season playing against a very well drilled side.
The score doesn’t reflect the game, with Spurs having a lot of the ball but unable to penetrate near goals.
Not unlike the U/12s, our best work was done by our defence and with some minor tweaks and some solid training sessions we should have a good year ahead.
Great games were played by some of our newest recruits. Keely played an imposing game setting up many trusts forward after some brilliant defensive work. And Paras, who arrived in the off season from Melrose, Paras is a fearless player and will be a solid inclusion to our defensive structure throughout the season ahead.
Special mention goes to Ben who showed us all a glimpse of his brilliance with our only goal.
With a bit of persistence he will be a bit of an x-factor throughout the year.
12 Boys v Cobram lost 0 – 1
It was not a great day for football, with a smoke haze in the air and the 30 degree plus temperatures and a lack of fitness in the legs of the young players and the post season “gamers”.
The first match of the season was the rematch of the Cup final and also replicated the score line.
It was a dour struggle with the staunched defences of both sides dominating the tussle.
The only shot on goal was the difference between the two sides on the day.
Great games from all our defence, led by Lenny, Charlie, John, and Murray who also gave his all.
We know where we are at, we know what we need to build on.
Fitness plays a big part.
