ALL MiniRoos will proceed on Saturday 5 June and Juniors (17’s and Under) will proceed this Sunday 6 June against Diamonds, with the rounds swapped to our home ground Aloysius and Lambert

We are just awaiting any further news regarding older age groups.

More news to follow regarding where our Miniroos will be competing.

Presidents Report

We welcomed an away game when we headed to Melrose Park on Sunday. Some of our hard working volunteers were able to sit back and enjoy a great days football without having to work the canteen and set-up etc. We celebrated some of our volunteers efforts last week, and more recognition will come over the next few months. This week we are back at home against Wangaratta, which is always a big contest for all teams so make sure everyone gets there to support the club.

Div.1 Men v Melrose Won 5-0

The senior men played well on Sunday and had their best result of the season. Mitch Aitken scored early to get the team off on the right foot. Mitch went on to score a hatrick, the first for the senior men in many years. Jacob Schreiber scored twice with great finishes to complete a top game from him. It was also pleasing to keep a clean sheet and the defence of Harrison Maher, Zac Burhop, Brandon Vescio and Kristian Shipard should be commended for their efforts. We play the top team next week, so we look forward to another big game from the Spurs.

Div.2 Men v Melrose Won 6-3

The team set out to celebrate Zac Fordham’s 21^st in style! We were given certain instructions before we kicked off but failed to listen to them but still managed to come in 3-2 up. The second half had us playing much better football and we worked the open spaces much better. Jack and Leo both had a day out scoring 2 each, Adib scored one as did the birthday boy! The whole teams focus is gaining the best that we can out of every match and with the pressure for spots mounting you can see that hopefully we will push into finals action. This win has us in 4^th position and playing 2^nd placed Wangaratta this weekend.

15 Boys v Melrose Drew 4-4

After a very slow start going down 2-0 in fast fashion, the team fought back honourably. We started dominating the middle and our defensive efforts were strong despite the huge size and speed differential. Great games by Nic and Sam and Dustin at the back. Patrick was again on fire up front, nailing another hatty.
We were 4-3 down with seconds to go and the last kick of the game was a Worldy from Wildy, top bins on the left foot. You ripper!!
A well deserved point against a bigger, stronger, faster opponent. This team has been huge over the last few weeks, with the majority of the team U13-14 years this will really help them develop their games to be stronger Spurs in the future. The coach is quite proud of what they are achieving. Goals: Patrick Mason x3, Elisha Wild x1

13 Boys v Melrose

We faced a very dominant Melrose on Sunday. They played the ball much better than we did in the first half and capitalised on their opportunities going forward. After half time we came out as a different team and played with more smarts than we did in the first half. We swapped Bailey and Jake around and Jake made some great saves in the second half while Bailey moved into defence for some of the half. Rylie, Josh and Hamish all did the hard yards all day and we are grateful for their efforts. The team will have learned something from this game and each time you learn, you get better! This loss leaves us in 7^th with a game against 6^th place Wangaratta this weekend.

12 Boys v Melrose Lost 2-6

This week the team faced the unbeaten Melrose away at Melrose park. Unfortunately, the team went down 6 goals to nil which wasn’t a true reflection of the game. The team at times had more possession and created just as many chances. It was very pleasing to see that the whole side never gave up and tried there best until the final whistle. Special mention to Mason,Taj and Elijah who did a power of work in the midfield and also to Connor and Hector who also played well.

12 Girls v Myrtleford Won 2-0

Our young Spurs girls headed to Willow park for a “home  game” away from  the rest of the club for a top of the table clash v Myrtleford Savoy.
Our girls got on the front foot straight away and began wave after wave of attack on the Myrtleford goal. The Savoy keeper again was outstanding and kept us at bay with Izzy and Mia both going close.
Spurs thought they made a break through when we got an indirect free kick just outside the box which Muireann took quickly and smashed it into the goal only for it to be disallowed after some confusion.
This only seemed to get the girls motivated more with the keeper again making some great stops from Muireann, Lily and Pallas. We went into the break 0-0.
The second half we again came out all guns firing creating many chances but not getting the reward. As usual our defensive 4 snuffed out any attacks that came their way. It took a penalty for us to make the break through after some good work from Pallas.
MJ converted the penalty to make it 1-0. This was followed up quickly with another goal from Stam following some great work from Lily and MJ. The girls kept going until the end and didn’t give Savoys a chance to get back in the game.
The girls have opened up a 6 point cushion at the top of the league, this is a fantastic achievement given only 4 of these girls are top age. The future is bright.

Presidents Report

It was another big round of home games on Sunday, and it feels like winter has really set in. Lucky for the new Club beanies and hoodies to keep us all warm, they are becoming very popular and look the goods.
A big result was seeing our young Div 1 Ladies team take the full points off the 2019 league champions St Pats. From all reports it was a dominant victory and a real sign of the future of the Ladies game at Spurs.
Over this week we are celebrating our club volunteers. I keep harping on their importance, but this week it’s a National recognition of what volunteers provide to the community.
On Sunday we play our fellow association founders Melrose at Melrose Park. The Div 1 men will be playing a precursor for the Luders/Laramee Cup when we meet again in Round 19, August 8 at home.

National Volunteer Week

Thank you Tony Maher
It is very apt that Tony Maher gets this recognition on a Sunday as he really owns it on home games. Tony doesn’t get down to Spurs on many other occasions as he is always kept busy volunteering elsewhere being President of the St Patricks Cricket Club. The fact that he chooses to generously spend the very little amount of spare time he gets cooking chips, serving food and refreshments all day in Hotspurs canteen is really a huge indication of the character of the man. And he’s been doing it for years.
Mahery can often be heard yelling at punters on the Hotspurs Hill who happen to get in the road of him watching his son Harrison playing in the Senior Mens team.
For a bloke who really knows very little about the game, he makes a huge difference to the functioning of our club. We say thanks to you Mahery.

Thank you Olivia Howard
Thrust into the world of voluntary club work (perhaps vicariously through a way to spend more time with her husband), Olivia is Hotspurs Canteen Manager.
With Spurs being the biggest Club in AWFA comes the responsibility of feeding the most members. Olivia has a very busy corporate life outside of Spurs having 2 fulltime jobs, and to take on possibly the most important and consuming role at the club is very selfless indeed. Other clubs have been known to pay their canteen managers but Olivia works for nothing but the smiles on the kids faces as she hands over the bag of lollies and buckets of chips. With the canteen being on Ground 1 and her Olivia’s children Cooper, Harry and Harper playing football on Ground 2, it is indicative of the sacrifice she makes for the club. Hotspurs thanks you Olivia.

Thank you Lorenzo Bonacci
Loz has taken on the assistant Miniroos coordinator role at the club over the last 2 years. During the Covid-19 football hiatus, he was instrumental in keeping as many kids as active as possible, setting up scratch matches for all kids who were keen on most weekends. Loz is also one of our Miniroos coaches and gameday coach of 2 sides running back to back. Loz is another that practically lives at the ground and always puts his hand up to help with anything. Thanks Loz.

Thank you Phil Barrett
A thing that separates this gentleman from many other volunteers is that he doesn’t have any kids playing at the club anymore. Another amazing fact about Phil is that this isn’t the only Club that acknowledges his amazing service over the years as he is a Life Member of the Albury City Football Club. Spurs are so grateful for what he has done for us over the years. Amongst other things, Phil has been our liaison with Albury City Council for some time, and was instrumental in gathering grants to assist our Lambert Park light project. Not only this, Phil is quite often the first to open up the ground on a Sunday, serve in the canteen, close the canteen, and then come back on Monday to clean the floors and BBQ. Phil was going to be our floating help for the Bunnings BBQ in January, he ended up working 3 shifts.
If there is ever a model for community engagement, Phil is the man. The list is endless, thanks for everything Phil.

Another long serving selfless club man. Craig has been managing many teams over the years and has now starting his coaching career at Spurs and also at AWFA Representative level. He is often first at the ground and one of the last to leave, making it even more special is that he and his lovely wife Nancy have a lot further to come from, driving in from Corowa. Craig will always be first to put his hand up to do what ever is required at the club, whether that be running the lines during games, or helping with the set-up and pack up. Craig and Nancy also bring out their famous hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie boards on the Hotspurs Hill and also during away games. Well done Craig and family.

Thank you Dwayne and Eliza Day
Dwayne was perhaps odds on to win our Club Person of the year award last year until the pandemic hit. His huge efforts over the last couple of years are indeed quite broad. Last year he was pivotal in launching our club Sponsorship Prospectus and approached numerous businesses gaining multi-year major sponsors in the process. On top of that , over the last few years Dwayne has been coming down to the club during the week, cleaning the containers and change rooms, preparing balls for Miniroos, washing strips and bibs, and marking the lines on the playing field. He also enjoys giving the President an insurmountable amount of feedback and advice, but with all his efforts, he’s allowed to.
Eliza Day is also an unsung hero of the club and well deserved of recognition. Eliza arranged the entire Miniroos teams strips this year, one of the most hectic times of the year. Placed them in sizes/ colours/ age/ sponsors order and also got the needle out to mend a few until the new batch of Quest Albury strips arrive. Eliza was also instrumental in managing our first Hotspurs Miniroos representative team when they travelled to Bendigo in March.

Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Twin City Drew 1-1

Another entertaining match involving the senior men. The game did not start well with Twin City being the better team for most of the first half. Spurs were down by a goal at halftime. The second half was a different story with the Spurs playing much better and applying plenty of pressure to our opponents defence. A great goal by David Mporashima got the team back on equal terms, others including Ben Gardiner, Dave Robin and Jacob Schreiber went close to scoring but Spurs could not get a winning goal. This was a much improved performance by the team. Zac Burhop played well in central defense with Kristian Hopwood and James Eggleston having strong games in the midfield. Hopefully we can get a win next week.

Women Div.1 v St Pats Won 4-2

Playing against the reigning league champions is a big ask no matter what league or division you are in, but for our Div 1 team to take the win here was extraordinary considering the average age of the Spurs team is 16.
Spurs took an early lead through some nice lead up play that was beautifully finished by co-captain Lily who is always setting the example on how to play with passion. St Pats fired back mid-way through the half with a long-range strike from their superstar Claire Mahoney. Going into the break at 1-1, Spurs knew they would have to maintain the intensity for the second half to avoid the fade that occurred the previous time these two teams played. So, when Mahoney scored again midway through the second half, you could be forgiven for thinking the young spurs side might be run over again, however you can’t underestimate these girls who have made a habit of winning throughout their junior years. With 20 minutes to go, Spurs turned up the pressure and started to dominate field position and possession. Elisha took on the defence and did everything but score when she rattled the post after leaving the St pats defence in her wake. Not long later, Elisha then found herself with the ball at her feet in the box and calmly slotted the equaliser. A few minutes later, Spurs won a corner, and from the ensuing play, Jess Briggs also received the ball at their feet in the box and a carbon copy finish from Jess, saw Spurs take the lead 3-2. St Pats tried to turn the game again by increasing their work rate, however Spurs wouldn’t concede and once again, the young legs of the Spurs team put the icing on the cake when Mya finished off her fine game by slotting the last goal to give Spurs a “famous” 4-2 victory. Everyone in the team played brilliantly however Grace, Laura and Bella all had stellar games shutting down the dangerous St Pats attack.

Div.2 Men v Twin City Won 5-1

The reserves came back with a vengeance on Sunday to get our 5th win of the season. The team started very well and had an early goal which seemed to settle us into a style of play that was both creative and for long periods of play, in possession of the ball. We still need to concentrate on our defensive effort after turn overs but we are working towards fixing that. The team is certainly more focused on getting into the finals this year and with the determination and effort that they showed on the weekend, they certainly have that goal in their sights. That win has us in 4th position with the trip to Melrose Park this weekend to take on 9th place Melrose.

Women Div.2 v Twin City Won 1-0

The ladies found themselves in for another tight tussle and once again showed the spirit this team is renowned for and found the winner from Steph due to hard work and perseverance. Once again, the girls put their bodies on the line and there were a few sore bodies and heads after the game. Possibly the longest second half in history was played out as the girls desperately tried to hold on for the win. They did hang on despite playing 45 minutes in a 35-minute half! Thanks to Francesco for refereeing the game, it certainly was entertaining. Steph worked really hard up front and deserved her goal, while Georgia and Tash kept their attack at bay. Overall a great team performance.

Over 35s v Twin City Lost 2-8

Not one to remember except for Kel scoring directly from the corner kick. Defensively we were very naive and played into Twin Cities hands by over committing trying to win a ball that wasn’t there to win and then being turned and left on the wrong defensive side. “No nick name” Edoir had a good game in goals as it could’ve been much worse if not for some great saves. Doug rushed back from D3M to join us but even his aggressive determination was to no avail.

Div.3 Men v United Lost 2-4

Hotspurs Div 3 Men were once again second best, following up their recent losses with a 4-2 defeat away to United. This was once again a much-changed Spurs side, with Marcus Cautela and Jacob Godfrey making their first appearances of the season. Two early mistakes on Spurs’ part led to an early 2-0 lead to United, and in spite of being the better team for most of the first half we could only claw back one goal by half time. This pattern continued into the second half, where in spite of the better possession and chances we just couldn’t do enough to put the ball away, while a 30-yard fluke from United sealed the result. Andrew Bonnetti was once again best for Hotspurs, with Maja enjoying the freedom of playing on the wing in the second half, capping his performance off with a curler from outside the box. With St Pats withdrawing from the competition, we are awaiting confirmation of the re-drawn rest of the season.

17 Boys v Twin City Drew 1-1

The freezing temperature at 8:30am meant it took a while for the team to fire up in this game. The first half saw Twin City on top an they took a 1-0 lead into half time.
A bit of a rocket from the coaches at half time got the team firing and they came out in the second half with a different mindset, and quickly got back in the game. It took nearly the entire second half to get on the scoreboard however with Cody picking up the equaliser with only a few minutes remaining. Despite creating several more chances we were unable to get the winner and had to be satisfied with a draw on this occasion. Suri and Reece were once again strong in the back while Seamus had a blinder on the wing.

15 Boys v Twin City Won 3-2

One of the most heartening wins of the coaches career. This was a great reward for effort. The team showed up after the pandemic break a little out of touch and unfit but has been working hard at training and the steady improvement they have shown over the weeks was rewarded on the weekend with a win over 2nd on the ladder Twin City.
Ben McNay has been finding his feet again after some time away through injury getting the scoring underway, Isaiah Clarke has also been one of the great improvers, tapping in a fine cross from Patrick Mason. It was only a couple of defensive mistakes that gave Twin City a look in. Well done to Tyreece in goals who is growing his game each week, and John Suttie whose speed at the centre half saved us on numerous occasions. A special mention to Alex Blackman who is steadily improving after only learning the game this year. Another big test comes against Melrose this week but Im sure we can put in a grand fight.

13 Boys v Twin City Lost 1-3

The 13’s finally got to take the field against Twin City after a few weeks off. As expected, we took a bit of time in the first half to find our groove again but found ourselves behind before Muireann scored a well-placed goal. For all of our efforts in front of goals we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net and it may be something we need to address over the coming weeks. We have had Sam Beeson join us as a new 13’s player and would like to thank Mason, Taj, Elijah, Billy and Muirann for helping us out, manager Nathan for running the line, both of the senior teams for coming to watch and we hope that you Aidan has a speedy recovery from his broken arm. We are currently sitting in 7th position and take on the 4th placed Melrose this weekend.

12 Girls v Wangaratta Won 7-0

On a lovely afternoon for soccer our girls showed up raring to go. We were the set up team for the day so most of the girls had been around the club a lot of the day, their highlight was walking on with the Senior ladies for their game.
The game started off a mile a minute and we kept getting sucked in to the contest and pulled out of position. With some direction from the sideline the girls reverted back to their structure and this lead to instant success. Pallas who was playing wide on the left found herself in acres of space and took the game on and calmly finished past the keeper to make it 1-0. This was followed quickly with a goal by Mia Harding her first for the club, she becomes the highest scoring Harding at the club with her father Scott still awaiting his first goal after 4 years ?.  A further goal by MJ directly from a corner brought us into the break 3-0 up.  At HT the girls got very excited to see our Senior ladies come over to support them, some were more excited about the possibility of having some of the Mother’s day Cake that the Senior ladies seemed to be enjoying! We jumped out of the blocks quickly with outstanding finishes by both Stam and Pallas to make it 5-0. Our 6^th goal was a familiar combination with Lily N finishing from an MJ corner, I count that as the 6^th this season in all competitions from this combination with many more to come I am sure. We saved our best goal until last, Indie who is our outstanding centre half asks every week can I run with the ball, the answer we give is in most situations you need to stick to our structure and try to get the ball out wide and build. This week we gave Indie a little form freedom in the second half and played her in midfield with 10 minutes to go. Her powerful running from midfield was similar to Steven Gerrard, breaking the line a couple of times and almost breaking the net with smashing finish. This was Indie’s first goal for the club and with a finish like that I can see many more coming. We may need to find a new Centre Half.
Well done to the girls on a fabulous win and a big thank you to all our parents and the girls who helped during the day with set up, BBQ, canteen and pack down.

Presidents Report

Gday Spurs,
Sunday was a cracking day where we celebrated Mothers Day as well as having our Female Football week celebrations.
Our very young Division 1 Ladies team were incredibly gallant in defeat against the league leaders United. Its awesome to see the development of so many of these talented players who have been at the club since Miniroos. It wont be long until they develop the strength to dominate this competition. Our youngest Sunday Girls team the U/12s played straight afterwards and are showing signs of following in their footsteps, remaining undefeated in a dominant performance.
Praise indeed to all those that have helped them get to this level and it is evidence that our Miniroos program and the efforts for all our female competitors is really working.

Spectators Code of Conduct

Again, we need to remind ourselves of how we should be acting whilst being a Hotspurs spectator.
As we have touched on previously, the number 1 rule in the FFA Spectator Code of Behaviour instructs us to;

‘Respect the decisions of Match Officials and teach our children to do the same’.

I know Albury Hotspurs have a tremendously passionate supporter base, this is why I believe we can be the drivers of a cultural change that sees us never cross the line between good supportive banter and abusive language towards officials, players, coaches and managers.   Without match officials we do not have a game, please respect them and their decisions at all times and lets make sure Hotspurs are setting the best example.

This Sunday we are home again and it looks a chilly one against Twin City.

Div.1 Men v Boomers Lost 0-5

It was a tough day at the office for the senior men. Our injury list is getting bigger and we came up against a well organised team. We had some early chances to score and put some pressure on but this was not to be. Boomers certainly took their opportunities well. The postive from the game was Will Karantanis, Jack Castles and Leo Castles all had a chance to play seniors and all three played very well. The younger team members Harrison Maher, Kristian Shipard and Ben Gardiner all worked hard for the Spurs. We look forward to a better result next week.

Div.2 Men v Boomers Lost 1-2

Another challenging week for the boys against the top side. We had two new faces with us this week with James Eggleston and Andrew Bonetti joining us for their first runout with the ressies. The game started at a very fast pace and stayed that way, unfortunately we found ourselves down after just 9 minutes but James equalised for us at the 25^th minute. Both teams continued to press and Boomers scored again in the 60^th minute and butchered 2 more opportunities in the last couple of minutes. Previously we would have walked away from this match happy that we were only beaten by one goal but such is the growth and belief of the team, now they walk away disappointed. The loss sees us sitting in 5^th position and taking on 6^th placed Twin City this weekend.

Over 35s v Boomers Won 2-0

Mother’s day had the team from Glen Park visit us for a pulsating encounter of football. The team was wondering how we would go for the first time against the mythical Platini, after Boomers FC enacted his buyout clause in the previous COVID hit season. Spurs were right in the gun with some injuries and unavailability leaving us a little short on the bench. The referees association decided that it was that big of a spectacle that they threw on one of the regions up and coming stars in the centre for his senior football referee debut. The game certainly heated up instantly with the Colonel getting into the French marauder from the start and there was much fanfare when he threw his escargot on the ground in disgust but Boomers were soon on the back foot after Kel recreated a classic Bergkamp finish for us to be up 1-0 after 6 minutes, Boomers forced an excellent save from Edwardo in goals but Spurs were dominating and when Harro played possibly the cross of the season for Kinno to bury it 2-0 was the lead. Boomers tried to come back into the game through some dubious handballing tactics but it soon became a war of attrition as both teams started to get injuries from the frenetic pace. It was great to see the boys control the game but next week will be a tougher occasion as we play a white hot Twin City who are currently second on the ladder. This win leaves us in 5^th place but hopefully over the next month or so our injuries and availability will improve for a us to build on a big second half of the season. Thanks to Brad for running the middle and to all the supporters for coming out and for Scotty and his efforts to win the bib!

12 Boys v Boomers Won 7-1

This week the team played SS&A Boomers and due to the opposition only having 10 players we had to play 10 v 10. After adjusting to a new formation we opened the scoring and didn’t look back, winning the game 7-1. Goal scorer’s on the day were Cayde, Connor, Noah, Harry and Taj. Sam, Hector and Alec also played well.

12 Girls v Wangaratta Won 7-0

On a lovely afternoon for soccer our girls showed up raring to go. We were the set up team for the day so most of the girls had been around the club a lot of the day, their highlight was walking on with the Senior ladies for their game.
The game started off a mile a minute and we kept getting sucked in to the contest and pulled out of position. With some direction from the sideline the girls reverted back to their structure and this lead to instant success. Pallas who was playing wide on the left found herself in acres of space and took the game on and calmly finished past the keeper to make it 1-0. This was followed quickly with a goal by Mia Harding her first for the club, she becomes the highest scoring Harding at the club with her father Scott still awaiting his first goal after 4 years ?.  A further goal by MJ directly from a corner brought us into the break 3-0 up.  At HT the girls got very excited to see our Senior ladies come over to support them, some were more excited about the possibility of having some of the Mother’s day Cake that the Senior ladies seemed to be enjoying! We jumped out of the blocks quickly with outstanding finishes by both Stam and Pallas to make it 5-0. Our 6^th goal was a familiar combination with Lily N finishing from an MJ corner, I count that as the 6^th this season in all competitions from this combination with many more to come I am sure. We saved our best goal until last, Indie who is our outstanding centre half asks every week can I run with the ball, the answer we give is in most situations you need to stick to our structure and try to get the ball out wide and build. This week we gave Indie a little form freedom in the second half and played her in midfield with 10 minutes to go. Her powerful running from midfield was similar to Steven Gerrard, breaking the line a couple of times and almost breaking the net with smashing finish. This was Indie’s first goal for the club and with a finish like that I can see many more coming. We may need to find a new Centre Half.
Well done to the girls on a fabulous win and a big thank you to all our parents and the girls who helped during the day with set up, BBQ, canteen and pack down.

Presidents Report

On Sunday we were back home hosting Myrtleford Savoys. There were some great results for Spurs across all junior grades in the boys and girls teams. The Senior Men fought on honourably after going down to 10 men and you can see they are going to get some reward for their efforts once they maintain some consistency.
Our Quest Albury MiniRoos season kicked off on Saturday and Alexandra Park was a sea of Gold with our record number of MiniRoos taking the field for the 2021 season. Worth noting that part of this was 4 x dedicated female teams which is again record breaking and a credit to our MiniRoos program and organisers.
This Sunday is Mothers Day and is all about our female competitors for Female Football week.
Hotspurs have a great history of brilliant female footballers and we can once again celebrate this on game day.
We will be hosting Boomers FC across some teams but our Senior Ladies will be playing arch rivals United at 11:20am on Aloysius. Post this game we will be cutting some cake in celebration before we witness our youngest females the U/12 girls playing for points against Wangaratta on Lambert.
Olivia will be putting on some great Canteen specials for Mothers Day so those involved can make a day of it.

Div.1 Men v Myrtleford Lost 2-3

The senior men always provide plenty of entertainment. The team lost to the ladder leaders by the odd goal after a real battle. The boys were down an early goal after a mix-up in the defence. Despite the setback the Spurs showed great determination to fight back and were level after Mitch Aitken pounced on an defensive error by the Myrtleford defence.
The game was very even but unfortunately Myrtleford took a lead to halftime after scoring from a free kick. The second half was very tight with neither side able to create many scoring chances. Hotspurs went down to ten men after Zac Burhop received a second yellow and Spurs were really up against it particularly as Myrtleford scored a third goal soon after. Despite this the team worked really hard and James Eggleston was able to score a goal and get Spurs back in the game. The last ten minutes were hectic but no further goals were scored.
The senior men again played well. Zac Bonetti had a strong game in goals.
Brandon Vescio ,Kristian Shipard and Dave Robin were also excellent for Spurs.

Div.2 Men FFA Cup v Boomers LOst 0-4

Last Wednesday night we travelled to Melrose Park to take on Boomers FC senior side in the FFA Cup. As the last remaining reserves side in the competition it was always going to be a battle against one of the form teams in the senior competition. Going into the halftime break we were 3-0 down but had battled valiantly for the entire half, we just needed to clear the ball a bit better from corners. In the second half our goal was to try and score one goal, unfortunately we didn’t do this but we didn’t concede until the 89^th minute. The entire team found the evening to be hugely enjoyable and the comradery that we have gained will be invaluable going forward in the season. While the entire team was fantastic on the night, I have to make mention of Francesco and his efforts in goal and young Tomo Heinjus who represented us for the first time.

Div.2 Men v Myrtleford Drew 2-2

Well Sunday’s game was full of excitement with Myrtleford travelling down to meet us at home. The first half was filled with a lot of passion from both sides and unfortunately we went into the break 1-0 down. We knew that they game would open up for us in the second half and we found the equaliser in the 49th minute with Jack Castles. We continued to push and unfortunately let ourselves down with another goal from a corner in the 79th minute. This really fired the team up and our continual attacks finally resulted with Leo being tunnelled and we received a penalty that David Mporashima calmly slotted. This draw leaves us in 4th spot with a home game against ladder leaders Boomers FC this weekend.

Women Div.2 v Mrytleford Lost 0-4

The beautiful weather didn’t suit the ladies who failed to get their 3^rd win in a row. Unfortunately, despite trying to get going, the ladies couldn’t get out of the blocks and never really looked like taking this one out.
Everyone ran their hearts out, but it wasn’t enough. In patches we played some great football and were unlucky not to get a goal or 2, however Myrtleford deserved the win on this occasion. Georgia was great in goals again, while Steph worked hard up front. Rylee and Chantal worked hard in the middle. The girls have next weekend off the freshen up and am sure will be firing next time they play.

Over 35s v Albury United Drew 1-1

We played our R3 catch up game on Wednesday evening under lights at Jelbart Park.
This fixture is always a tough encounter and this was no exception. Jono Cochrane made his long awaited debut and put in a mountain of work in the midfield for the team. We had the better of the chances in the first half but didn’t make the most of the great lead up play when the opportunity finally arrived.
A defensive error in the second half was the opening United seized upon to take the lead. Kinno replied with a cracking thunderbolt left foot strike into the top corner to equalize. Kinno later had a chance to make it 2 and give us the lead and possible victory but the United defender managed to toe poke the ball away just as he was about to strike.
Much improved TEAM performance from our last hit out.

Div.3 Men v Diamonds Lost 0-2

Spurs Div 3 Men finally got to play their second game of the season this weekend. Due to the unfortunate scheduling of matches, the Under 17 contingent of the squad were forced to rush straight from their game at Aloysius to back up away at Diamonds. This doubling up and lack of time to fully prepare led to us being on the back foot from the get-go against a Diamonds side that looked fresher throughout. Goalkeeper Joel McDonough was a confident and calming  presence at the back, while Paul Kinning ran the defence well until his injury late in the first half. While both teams had been well-matched for most of the first half, an error from our own possession late in the half allowed Diamonds to score a goal that we had never really looked like conceding up to that point. Fatigue worked against Spurs in the second half, and Diamonds grew in confidence, especially in the midfield, when they doubled their lead on the counter-attack. Spurs came more into the game from this point, and started playing some more flowing attacking football, but we just couldn’t make it click in the final third, with a well-worked shot from Andrew Bonetti being our best chance on target. Veteran Mick Corkett looked bright throughout, while our U17s worked hard but were beaten by fresher legs. We look forward to a repeat of this fixture this coming Sunday.

17 Boys v Myrtleford Won 3-1

The team played really well and deserved the win. Somehow Myrtleford  took the lead after a shot was saved against the crossbar by Lachie but a goalmouth scramble meant he snagged a goal.
Not long later Spurs scored a brilliant goal that looked just like a training drill with Brodie finishing a beautiful move that started from the back line and ended up with a cross being drilled to the back post.
Solomon put us ahead before half time with a nice goal. Jay finished off the game with a deserved goal late in the second half. Once again, the backline was strong and Lachie made some great saves in goal. Seamus had a great game on the wing, while Jay again worked tirelessly in the middle. It really was a great team effort with everyone doing their bit to get the win.

17 Girls v Myrtleford Won 10-0

After over a month without a game the 17 Girls were keen to continue their unbeaten record. The game started with a flurry including Roisin Wilson scoring two goals in the first few minutes. This was Roisin’s first game for Hotspurs and she continued to threaten the Myrtleford goal scoring 4 for the day. The team also welcomed another two players being Hayley Quinn and Aleya McCullough. The game was played in a very friendly manner with both sides enjoying the competition but also finding opportunities to appreciate a spot of banter. The final result was a 10-0 win to Hotspurs but the score could have been higher. Goal scorers were Roisin 4, Lily 3, Keely 2 and Alice McIntosh 1.

15 Boys v Mrytleford Won 11-1

This team has really started to train well and put in some good performances for no reward. Today they got the reward. With a new formation Patrick was able to break free to find himself 1 out with the keeper on numerous occasions to have a hattrick by half time.
Wildy also found herself having a solo run from Centre back and finishing a ripper goal before being moved into the midfield at half time. Great improvement has been shown from Carl and Isaiah (once he arrived ?) Dustin also did his bit at right back before getting the opportunity to trouble the scorers and finished a great Patrick cross. Murray was also provided a similar opportunity to finish but couldnt quite angle his size 13s around it. Read the room Murray, the crowd would’ve gone nuts. Sam and Nic again solid in defence.
Keep up the good work team, we will be peaking at the right time of the year.

14 Girls v Myrtleford Won 4-1

The girls started the game up and about. It was noted all week that Alice hadn’t scored a goal all year and was determined to rectify this. She scored 2 in a minute and really was the difference.
A lot of our team played a few games as AWFA representatives on Saturday and were a little flat at certain times. They were still able to work the ball around well and attack. Most of the game was played in our forward half and we really could’ve won the game by a lot more, Craig counted 12 attempts that should’ve gone in but hit side netting or were gently passed to the keeper. It looks like finishing practice will again be on the cards at training again. Well done though girls, we are starting to be very consistent. Great games by Alice in attack Elissa in the midfield and Bianca at Centre Back.

12 Boys v Myrtleford Won 9-1

This week the team face Myrtleford at Home. Hotspurs scored two early goals within the opening few minutes to take a commanding 4-1 lead at half time, we played even better in the second half to score another 5 goals to win the match comfortably 9-1. Noah scored a hat trick, Billy and Aidan scored two goals a piece and Sam and Mason each scored singles. Hector was excellent in defence as was James, overall it was an outstanding team performance. Well done!

12 Girls v Myrtleford Won 1-0

The girls arrived for a top of the table clash against the only other unbeaten side in the competition. There was lots of nervous young ladies pre kick off. The coaching staff assured the girls, many of whom where running out at Spurs Stadium for the first time that the home crowd will get behind them and that they had put the hard work in training so there was no need for nerves.
The first half was very entertaining. Spurs where the more attacking side with the Savoy goalkeeper keeping them in the game on multiple occasions. We created multiple chances in the first half the best of which fell to Izzy, only to be denied by a world class save.  Our defence was outstanding through out with Stella, Indie and Lily F shutting out the very dangerous Myrtleford attack.  We went into the break 0-0. As with previous weeks the coaching team asked the girls to back themselves in and to stick to our structure and continue to get the ball out wide.  The girls came out flying in the second half Harper and Ivy led the line and both went close in a goal mouth scramble. As the game progressed some of our girls began to tire, 7 of the girls had played in Griffith at a rep tournament the previous day and the fatigue began to show, however the girls dug deep and kept going and never gave up or complained. Whilst our coaching staff where making some tactical substitutions and not watching the game we took the lead through a cross/shot from Muireann which looped into the top corner. As the game was so tight and tense we rejigged our defensive structure as Savoy pushed for an equaliser. The two Lilys and Indie again quashed any attacks and gave a masterclass in how to defend. Molly carrying a niggle from the previous day dug deep and sat in front of the back line and was instrumental in breaking down their attacks. When the game ended the girls sang the song as loud as I have heard it been sang ever!  I am not sure our coaches and parents can handle another game like this!!
