Div.1 Men v Twin City Won 2-0

This was an outstanding performance by Spurs against a tough and physical side. Mitch Aitken got the team off to a great start with a goal after five minutes. The game then became a real slog on a wet and slippery pitch. The determination and energy displayed by all the Spurs boys was terrific. Mitch Aitken clinched the result with his second goal late in the match. Great win. The defence was outstanding keeping a clean sheet and the combination of Zac Burhop and Brandon Vescio in central defence is working really well. Also special mention to Subash Thapa who was outstanding in midfield. Well done all.

Div.2 Men v Twin City Won 4-1

The reserves welcomed back Townie, Heathy and Kasey for the trip to Kelly park. Even though the day was dreary, the ground held up very well and seemed to suit our passing game a lot better than the opposition. We soon found that we were able to expose them in certain positions in the park and we rewarded with a goal after 8 minutes with Leo, Zac then doubled our advantage on the 28^th minute with one of the goals of the season so far. At half time we spoke about getting the ball under control and not conceding to give them a lift. We had control of the game through terrific work of the back four and the midfield and we effectively put the game to bed when jack scored in the 78^th minute. Unfortunately we were unable to keep a clean sheet after conceding in the 85^th minute but the good Robes(Jonny) finished off a magnificent corner from Heathy to make it 4-1. The team continues to improve each week and the work rate and belief of the squad is fantastic and we are excited to play 2^nd placed Diamonds this week. We are currently in 5^th position.

Over 35s v Twin City Lost 1-7

Eddy did his best in goals and made many saves. Unfortunately he was let done by the team in front of him. Kinno scored our only goal from distance by pouncing on one of only a few mistakes by Twin City. It was an embarrassing performance to say the least!

13 Boys v Twin City Lost 1-6

The kids played their heart out on the weekend against a very strong Twin City side. We welcomed Indi and Thomas in for their first game in 13’s. Unfortunately we didn’t start the game well but worked our way back into the contest to be only down by a goal in the break. Twin City came out firing after the break but we fought hard but just couldn’t hold them out. While the whole team battle hard ,Indi was great in her first game in with Rylee playing a huge role in centre mid, Bailey and Josh both had stand out performances as well. We will get there as we learn from our mistakes and going forward just need to collect more points than the first half of the season. We are in 6^th position and travel to take on 10^th placed Diamonds this weekend. Thanks to all of the players and parents for coming out on an ordinary Sunday morning!

Presidents Report

Prior to the weekends football, 140 odd Hotspurs players, former players, parents and friends gathered at our famous annual Trivia Night. Having such a large group together is something we used to take for granted, and it was great to have some normality back again. Thanks so much to those that donated prizes and also those that spent so much time putting the night together. Later in the evening the Commercial Club noticed a spike in their Wifi use, however Im sure the best team won on the night.

After another day of sunshine at Jelbart park for Miniroos on Saturday, we hosted Wangaratta on Sunday for what was our 7^th home round at the halfway point of the season.

Thanks to those who picked up a fair amount of slack from the duty team of the day.

By the end of the day there was a large crowd on the Hotspurs Hill and tremendous banter coming from the natives. There was some excellent results over the course of the day with Spurs taking the points more often than not. Most teams are away at Twin City Wanderers this Sunday, however the Senior Men will be playing the Saturday night at Willow park. Please get along and show your support, night football is a great spectacle.

Div.1 Men v Wangaratta Lost 1-5

The seniors were matched against the ladder leaders in what turned out to be a very tough game. The team worked very hard in the first half but unfortunately conceded a goal just on halftime to be down one goal at the break. A penalty early in the second half added plenty of controversy to the match with the kicker playing the ball against the post and following up to the place the ball in the net. It is a rare occurrence which fooled the officials. The goal should have been disallowed as a penalty taker cannot kick the ball twice. This goal really made the situation difficult for Spurs. However all fourteen Spurs players who got on the pitch played with great endeavour but found our opponents  too good on the day. James Eggleston and Kristian Shipard were outstanding for Spurs and Jack Castles scoring his first senior goal was another highlight.

Over 35s v Wangaratta Drew 3-3, then Lost 2-3!

Over 35s had a chance to move from 4^th to 3^rd on the ladder. However the effort, individual quality and team performance was below par to say the least. At half time coach Butsy told us to take up golf as we were not playing as a team. Two nice goals from Harro and Loz was not enough and the Wang keeper denied Kel’s penalty shot. We did create more chances than Wang but either our lack of quality or the Wang defence and keeper kept us to only the two goals.
The team needs to improve a lot if we want to get anything out of or game next week against a quality Twin City outfit.

Div.3 Men v Albury CityDrew 0-0

Sunday saw Hotspurs become the first team this season to take points off a strong Albury City outfit. Having lost 5-1 in the first encounter between the teams this season, we were second-favourites going into the game, but turned in probably our best performance of the season to escape Jelbart with a well-deserved draw. Spurs started the first half on the front foot, with Cody Newcomb looking strong on his return to the club, and Maja putting in some excellent work on the right wing. As the half went by, City came more into the game without overly worrying goalkeeper Harry Nagle, who dealt comfortably with anything that came his way. The calculated risk of a goal-saving foul by Marcus Cautela was punished with a red card early in the second half, but the rest of the team stepped up to make up for his absence for the remainder of the match. In spite of almost constant pressure from the home side, Spurs had opportunities to score on the break, with Maja in particular looking lively throughout, and Tomo causing trouble for the City defence with almost every touch. This performance gives us plenty to build on as we head into the second half of the season.

17 Girls v Wangaratta Won 3-2

Sunday saw a clash between the two undefeated teams. Led by Keely, the girls took the game to Wang and controlled play throughout the first half. Wang’s key players were kept quiet for most of the first half with strong challenges and excellent possession by Spurs. Alex and the back four were solid throughout the match and closed down a number of penetrative runs from Wang’s forwards. The deadlock was broken with a timely finish from Maddie allowing Spurs to go to the break 1 – Nil up. The second half was a closer contest with the introduction of another talented Wang player in the middle. The score see-sawed with Wang’s newly introduced player striking an unstoppable shot into the top corner to make the score 1 all. This was quickly followed by a brilliant team effort to see Ro put Spurs back in front. With 5 minutes to go a lucky deflection and shot by Wang saw the score tied again. Both teams were hurting as many had played games earlier in the day and this game was turning into a survival of the fittest. With less than 2 minutes to go Hotspurs made a decisive move up the right side of the field with Alice, Rylee and Ro pushing deep into the 18 yard box only to see the ball cleared for a corner. Alice stepped up to once again deliver a splendid cross into the box finding a number of Spurs players eager to score the winning goal. It was Keely who delivered to decisive strike ending the game of the day with Spurs taking home the points. A big thank you to Elisha for her efforts in goal against a talented opposition and to Haley Quinn for her speedy diagonal runs to get in behind the defence. Finally, to the Team Captain Keely who showed excellent leadership by her example, focusing the team and encouraging them to fight hard all day.

15 Boys v Wangaratta Drew 2-2

We were a little undermanned today with some big names out injured, sick or playing elsewhere.
But the boys really gave it their all, Wang kicked a miraculous goal which was really against the run of play.
Will and Cooper were deep in midfield for 60 minutes after playing full games in the 13s just prior and were rock solid.
Patrick bagged a nice brace, but congratulations to Dustin, Nic, Sam, and Murray who started the year a little rusty but have stuck to it and made huge improvements week after week.
I’m impressed with the steady improvements and I’ve no doubt we will beat that lot next time we meet.
One of the spectators noted, “Im not sure Lambert Park has ever seen so many mullets”. Goals: Patrick Mason x2

14 Girls v Wangaratta Won 6-1

This was another milestone for this great team. Our senior players in Wildy, El and Alice had just played 90 minutes of football in the Senior ladies but came and lead their fellow team mates with their incredible will to win. Other guns like Muireann Kilroy, a full game of 13 boys and 12 girls just prior, and Rylee Steele had already taken apart the Wang Ressie ladies midfield. Then we have such accomplished footballers who play their role with infinite football smarts, courage and persistence like Shanaya, Furzey, Bi, Seanna, Ellissa and Pania. And with our newer players to the group in Lyla, Shayla and Amelia who all had their best games so far this year and are making huge improvements week to week. Also special mentions to Indi and Em for assisting after the 12s.
Most of these girls have faced this Wangaratta side on numerous occasions over the years, they class them as arch rivals. They have never beaten them by 5 goals (Justin Wild ?)
We are undefeated at the half way point of the season and the coach and manager could not be prouder. Well done.

12 Boys v Wangaratta Won 2-1

Today we faced Wangaratta at Lambert park, the first half was pretty even and we went into the break at nil all, in second half the team lifted there work rate and after a beautiful cross from Cayde and a pinpoint finish from Billy we were up 1 nil, Wangaratta scored on the counter not long after to make it 1-1 with 5 minutes go, once again the team never gave up and Billy scored the equaliser with literally the last kick of the game to come away with a 2-1 victory. The whole team played well, special mention to Sam, Billy, Cayde and Hector.

Presidents Report

It was a huge relief to have our AWFA competition back on Sunday, albeit with a few restrictions for our cross border players and counterparts. It was starting to seem a little bit like déjà vu from this time last year. We may face more hiccups along the way but it’s important to remain positive and play the cards we are dealt.
We have a general league bye this weekend, so players and volunteers can have a well earned rest. With torrential downpours predicted over the next few days I know there may be a few training sessions cancelled so stayed tuned.
In just over a week we have our world famous Hotspurs Trivia night, I for one cant wait for it. Still a few tickets and tables available. Get amongst it.

Div.1 Men v Diamonds Won 1-0

The Div One Men scored another win which was very satisfying. Although the final score was close Spurs had the majority of chances but were denied by a good performance by the opposing keeper. The defence was excellent again in keeping a clean sheet. Ben Gardiner did well filling in at right back. Kristian Hopwood had a strong game in midfield and scored the winning goal. Unfortunately Kristian received two yellow cards and finished the game on the sideline. Mitchell Aitken and Brandon Vescio also played very well on Sunday.

Div.2 Men v Diamonds Lost 2-3

We welcomed the second placed Diamonds for the resumption of football and we knew that it was going to a hard game. This is a match that both teams were eager to win as it was going to be vital to ladder positions. Unfortunately we went into the break 2-0 down but we felt that we were far from out of the contest. Jack Castles had us within a goal after 46 minutes and Patrick equalised at the 61^st minute. Spurs continued to push for the winner when unfortunately we were done on the counter attack in the 89^th minute to lose the game. This loss has us in 4^th position going into the midseason break.

Over 35s v Diamonds Won 2-0

It was a tough battle against a physical Diamonds outfit who were hard to break down. We created a few chances in the first half but couldn’t make it count on the score line going into the break nil all.
Diamonds aggressiveness was their own undoing when gifting us a penalty soon after the restart. Our team were delighted to receive the penalty and then most of their faces went white with the prospect they may be given the orders to take it. Fortunately the ball had rolled out to Kel who calmly walked up, place the ball on the spot and clinically scored by sending their goalkeeper to the shops to get a sausage roll.
We held our nerve at the back as Eddy declined any Diamonds efforts on goal and even an attempt from team mate Wildinho who tried his luck against Eddy as he was no good going the other way!
Kino pushed forward late and scored a cracking goal to seal the victory and move us up to 5th on the ladder.

Highlights from the players banter;
“Selfish Kino could have setup Wildinho but decided to be a hog and score himself”
“Wildinioh fails to score again in real competition, Kinno makes correct decision not to offload”
“Finally had a decent coach making good tactical substitutions”
“Defensively sound everyone did their jobs nil score line against. Fantastic goal keeping, well taken pen and good goal by Kino”
“Over 35s labour to surprise win in spite of the absence of their talismanic number 19”
“Loz was steamrolled by a Diamonds player, luckily he had his shin pads on which saved his life”

Div.3 Men v Diamonds Won 3-0

A much-changed Div 3 Men’s side got a much-needed win at Aloysius on Sunday. Welcoming in a number of players from the Reserves squad as well as some players who were in need of match fitness, the Hotspurs side showed a greater level of maturity than in previous weeks. In spite of having more of the ball, as well as the better opportunities, we somehow went in 0-0 at half time. Diamonds’ tiring legs were punished early in the second half when a ball over the top from Jono Cochrane was pounced on by Andrew Bonetti who slotted calmly past the keeper. Spurs pressure was rewarded shortly after that when Jono Cochrane once more justified his selection with a calmly slotted free kick. The result was put beyond doubt with a few minutes left when good teamwork in the final third was finished by Neil van der Ploeg. Many of the players on display on Sunday will be pushing for selection at higher grades in future weeks, which is a great reflection of the growing depth at the club.

17 Girls v Diamonds Won 8-0

This week saw a clash of two of the top three teams. Diamonds was 4 wins from 5 games and Hotspurs season undefeated from 4 games played.
The first half was a very close competition with both teams having opportunities to score. With some excellent defensive effort from our back four, and our stand in goalkeeper Alex dominating the 18 yard box, Diamonds found it increasingly difficult to find a way through. Their tactic of long balls in behind our defence for quick players to burst onto initially caused a dislocation of the Hotspurs defensive structure but this was quickly shut down. Thankfully their early success in getting in behind our defence did not result in success on goal. It was a brilliant finish from Lily which saw Hotspurs go into halftime 1-0.
The second half was a completely different story. Hotspurs stepped it up and slowed play through the middle of the park. Keely, Ava, Lily and Roisin began to dictate play and connect quality passes together to frustrate the Diamonds midfield. The defensive efforts of Seanna, Eloise, Aleya and Alice in the second half also saw Diamonds not being able to penetrate the backline as occurred in the first half resulting in very few incursions into the Spurs defensive third. Maddie, Hayley and Rylee provided width and strong attacking options out wide. Thank you to Rylee, Alice, Seanna, Bianca, Taylor, Shanaya and Shayla for backing up after playing the game before ours and making solid contributions. Final score was 8 – 0 with goals scored by Ava (3), Lily (2), Roisin (2) and Alice (1).
Special mention to Lily for a massive effort across the park including defensive pressure in midfield resulting in a quick transition to attack and scoring opportunities. Next game is 20 Jun against united.

15 Boys v Diamonds Won 6-1

Even though Isaiah Clarke finished a cross from Patrick Mason in the first minute of the game it was a reasonably slow start.
Another solid performance from the lads after half time and we are slowly building up a great style of play. Excellent efforts from Sam, Nic, Dustin, Tyreece and the new look Murray in defense. Cooper was solid in the air too, that mullet flowing in the drizzle and rain. Carl also had his best game in 2 years.
Have the week off the track lads and back to training next week to seek revenge on our arch rival United.

14 Girls v Diamonds Won 4-1

The coach was woken to a message from the Senior Ladies coach with the news that the league golden boot leader Wildy did not pull up well from a hit out in Young the previous day and would be missing from the line-up. This was touted as a mini grand final, and a must win for our League chances this year.
Challenge accepted. Our girls were super on Sunday. Their team work was immense and their strength against a much bigger side was incredible to watch. Our senior leaders in the group Eloise, Alice and Rylee really stepped up to drag the team to a comfortable victory against a really good team.
Special mention to Indi Wishart who stepped up from the U/12 girls and looked solid in both attack and defense. And also thanks to Shanaya for her efforts in goals.
Great team effort, coach was super proud.

13 Boys v Diamonds Won 7-0

This week the team really turned on their football ability and game! We were all finally able to find our passing and shooting game making smart decisions to open up Diamonds defence. It was pleasing to see the amount of scorers with Rylee, Elijah, Will, Cooper and Josh scoring one and Billy Whitfield bagging 2. Anytime you don’t concede  you should also mention the defence with Rylie, Cooper, Taj, Sam (playing his first game for us) Jake and Bailey all working hard, but Hamish had his game of the season so far and all the team were so proud of his effort. Thanks again to the young brigade for filling in and I will send out emails if training is not on.

12 Boys v Diamonds Lost 1-3

Today the team played Wodonga Diamonds at Lambert park on a slightly cold morning, the team struggled a bit in the first half and found themselves 3-1 down at halftime. The second half was a lot more positive and the team fought back for a 4 all draw with Billy scoring in the final seconds.  Billy scored a hat trick and Taran scored the other, Harry was excellent in goals and made a few blinding saves to keep us in it.

Presidents Report

We welcomed an away game when we headed to Melrose Park on Sunday. Some of our hard working volunteers were able to sit back and enjoy a great days football without having to work the canteen and set-up etc. We celebrated some of our volunteers efforts last week, and more recognition will come over the next few months. This week we are back at home against Wangaratta, which is always a big contest for all teams so make sure everyone gets there to support the club.

Div.1 Men v Melrose Won 5-0

The senior men played well on Sunday and had their best result of the season. Mitch Aitken scored early to get the team off on the right foot. Mitch went on to score a hatrick, the first for the senior men in many years. Jacob Schreiber scored twice with great finishes to complete a top game from him. It was also pleasing to keep a clean sheet and the defence of Harrison Maher, Zac Burhop, Brandon Vescio and Kristian Shipard should be commended for their efforts. We play the top team next week, so we look forward to another big game from the Spurs.

Div.2 Men v Melrose Won 6-3

The team set out to celebrate Zac Fordham’s 21^st in style! We were given certain instructions before we kicked off but failed to listen to them but still managed to come in 3-2 up. The second half had us playing much better football and we worked the open spaces much better. Jack and Leo both had a day out scoring 2 each, Adib scored one as did the birthday boy! The whole teams focus is gaining the best that we can out of every match and with the pressure for spots mounting you can see that hopefully we will push into finals action. This win has us in 4^th position and playing 2^nd placed Wangaratta this weekend.

15 Boys v Melrose Drew 4-4

After a very slow start going down 2-0 in fast fashion, the team fought back honourably. We started dominating the middle and our defensive efforts were strong despite the huge size and speed differential. Great games by Nic and Sam and Dustin at the back. Patrick was again on fire up front, nailing another hatty.
We were 4-3 down with seconds to go and the last kick of the game was a Worldy from Wildy, top bins on the left foot. You ripper!!
A well deserved point against a bigger, stronger, faster opponent. This team has been huge over the last few weeks, with the majority of the team U13-14 years this will really help them develop their games to be stronger Spurs in the future. The coach is quite proud of what they are achieving. Goals: Patrick Mason x3, Elisha Wild x1

13 Boys v Melrose

We faced a very dominant Melrose on Sunday. They played the ball much better than we did in the first half and capitalised on their opportunities going forward. After half time we came out as a different team and played with more smarts than we did in the first half. We swapped Bailey and Jake around and Jake made some great saves in the second half while Bailey moved into defence for some of the half. Rylie, Josh and Hamish all did the hard yards all day and we are grateful for their efforts. The team will have learned something from this game and each time you learn, you get better! This loss leaves us in 7^th with a game against 6^th place Wangaratta this weekend.

12 Boys v Melrose Lost 2-6

This week the team faced the unbeaten Melrose away at Melrose park. Unfortunately, the team went down 6 goals to nil which wasn’t a true reflection of the game. The team at times had more possession and created just as many chances. It was very pleasing to see that the whole side never gave up and tried there best until the final whistle. Special mention to Mason,Taj and Elijah who did a power of work in the midfield and also to Connor and Hector who also played well.

12 Girls v Myrtleford Won 2-0

Our young Spurs girls headed to Willow park for a “home  game” away from  the rest of the club for a top of the table clash v Myrtleford Savoy.
Our girls got on the front foot straight away and began wave after wave of attack on the Myrtleford goal. The Savoy keeper again was outstanding and kept us at bay with Izzy and Mia both going close.
Spurs thought they made a break through when we got an indirect free kick just outside the box which Muireann took quickly and smashed it into the goal only for it to be disallowed after some confusion.
This only seemed to get the girls motivated more with the keeper again making some great stops from Muireann, Lily and Pallas. We went into the break 0-0.
The second half we again came out all guns firing creating many chances but not getting the reward. As usual our defensive 4 snuffed out any attacks that came their way. It took a penalty for us to make the break through after some good work from Pallas.
MJ converted the penalty to make it 1-0. This was followed up quickly with another goal from Stam following some great work from Lily and MJ. The girls kept going until the end and didn’t give Savoys a chance to get back in the game.
The girls have opened up a 6 point cushion at the top of the league, this is a fantastic achievement given only 4 of these girls are top age. The future is bright.

Presidents Report

It was another big round of home games on Sunday, and it feels like winter has really set in. Lucky for the new Club beanies and hoodies to keep us all warm, they are becoming very popular and look the goods.
A big result was seeing our young Div 1 Ladies team take the full points off the 2019 league champions St Pats. From all reports it was a dominant victory and a real sign of the future of the Ladies game at Spurs.
Over this week we are celebrating our club volunteers. I keep harping on their importance, but this week it’s a National recognition of what volunteers provide to the community.
On Sunday we play our fellow association founders Melrose at Melrose Park. The Div 1 men will be playing a precursor for the Luders/Laramee Cup when we meet again in Round 19, August 8 at home.

National Volunteer Week

Thank you Tony Maher
It is very apt that Tony Maher gets this recognition on a Sunday as he really owns it on home games. Tony doesn’t get down to Spurs on many other occasions as he is always kept busy volunteering elsewhere being President of the St Patricks Cricket Club. The fact that he chooses to generously spend the very little amount of spare time he gets cooking chips, serving food and refreshments all day in Hotspurs canteen is really a huge indication of the character of the man. And he’s been doing it for years.
Mahery can often be heard yelling at punters on the Hotspurs Hill who happen to get in the road of him watching his son Harrison playing in the Senior Mens team.
For a bloke who really knows very little about the game, he makes a huge difference to the functioning of our club. We say thanks to you Mahery.

Thank you Olivia Howard
Thrust into the world of voluntary club work (perhaps vicariously through a way to spend more time with her husband), Olivia is Hotspurs Canteen Manager.
With Spurs being the biggest Club in AWFA comes the responsibility of feeding the most members. Olivia has a very busy corporate life outside of Spurs having 2 fulltime jobs, and to take on possibly the most important and consuming role at the club is very selfless indeed. Other clubs have been known to pay their canteen managers but Olivia works for nothing but the smiles on the kids faces as she hands over the bag of lollies and buckets of chips. With the canteen being on Ground 1 and her Olivia’s children Cooper, Harry and Harper playing football on Ground 2, it is indicative of the sacrifice she makes for the club. Hotspurs thanks you Olivia.

Thank you Lorenzo Bonacci
Loz has taken on the assistant Miniroos coordinator role at the club over the last 2 years. During the Covid-19 football hiatus, he was instrumental in keeping as many kids as active as possible, setting up scratch matches for all kids who were keen on most weekends. Loz is also one of our Miniroos coaches and gameday coach of 2 sides running back to back. Loz is another that practically lives at the ground and always puts his hand up to help with anything. Thanks Loz.

Thank you Phil Barrett
A thing that separates this gentleman from many other volunteers is that he doesn’t have any kids playing at the club anymore. Another amazing fact about Phil is that this isn’t the only Club that acknowledges his amazing service over the years as he is a Life Member of the Albury City Football Club. Spurs are so grateful for what he has done for us over the years. Amongst other things, Phil has been our liaison with Albury City Council for some time, and was instrumental in gathering grants to assist our Lambert Park light project. Not only this, Phil is quite often the first to open up the ground on a Sunday, serve in the canteen, close the canteen, and then come back on Monday to clean the floors and BBQ. Phil was going to be our floating help for the Bunnings BBQ in January, he ended up working 3 shifts.
If there is ever a model for community engagement, Phil is the man. The list is endless, thanks for everything Phil.

Another long serving selfless club man. Craig has been managing many teams over the years and has now starting his coaching career at Spurs and also at AWFA Representative level. He is often first at the ground and one of the last to leave, making it even more special is that he and his lovely wife Nancy have a lot further to come from, driving in from Corowa. Craig will always be first to put his hand up to do what ever is required at the club, whether that be running the lines during games, or helping with the set-up and pack up. Craig and Nancy also bring out their famous hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie boards on the Hotspurs Hill and also during away games. Well done Craig and family.

Thank you Dwayne and Eliza Day
Dwayne was perhaps odds on to win our Club Person of the year award last year until the pandemic hit. His huge efforts over the last couple of years are indeed quite broad. Last year he was pivotal in launching our club Sponsorship Prospectus and approached numerous businesses gaining multi-year major sponsors in the process. On top of that , over the last few years Dwayne has been coming down to the club during the week, cleaning the containers and change rooms, preparing balls for Miniroos, washing strips and bibs, and marking the lines on the playing field. He also enjoys giving the President an insurmountable amount of feedback and advice, but with all his efforts, he’s allowed to.
Eliza Day is also an unsung hero of the club and well deserved of recognition. Eliza arranged the entire Miniroos teams strips this year, one of the most hectic times of the year. Placed them in sizes/ colours/ age/ sponsors order and also got the needle out to mend a few until the new batch of Quest Albury strips arrive. Eliza was also instrumental in managing our first Hotspurs Miniroos representative team when they travelled to Bendigo in March.

Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Twin City Drew 1-1

Another entertaining match involving the senior men. The game did not start well with Twin City being the better team for most of the first half. Spurs were down by a goal at halftime. The second half was a different story with the Spurs playing much better and applying plenty of pressure to our opponents defence. A great goal by David Mporashima got the team back on equal terms, others including Ben Gardiner, Dave Robin and Jacob Schreiber went close to scoring but Spurs could not get a winning goal. This was a much improved performance by the team. Zac Burhop played well in central defense with Kristian Hopwood and James Eggleston having strong games in the midfield. Hopefully we can get a win next week.

Women Div.1 v St Pats Won 4-2

Playing against the reigning league champions is a big ask no matter what league or division you are in, but for our Div 1 team to take the win here was extraordinary considering the average age of the Spurs team is 16.
Spurs took an early lead through some nice lead up play that was beautifully finished by co-captain Lily who is always setting the example on how to play with passion. St Pats fired back mid-way through the half with a long-range strike from their superstar Claire Mahoney. Going into the break at 1-1, Spurs knew they would have to maintain the intensity for the second half to avoid the fade that occurred the previous time these two teams played. So, when Mahoney scored again midway through the second half, you could be forgiven for thinking the young spurs side might be run over again, however you can’t underestimate these girls who have made a habit of winning throughout their junior years. With 20 minutes to go, Spurs turned up the pressure and started to dominate field position and possession. Elisha took on the defence and did everything but score when she rattled the post after leaving the St pats defence in her wake. Not long later, Elisha then found herself with the ball at her feet in the box and calmly slotted the equaliser. A few minutes later, Spurs won a corner, and from the ensuing play, Jess Briggs also received the ball at their feet in the box and a carbon copy finish from Jess, saw Spurs take the lead 3-2. St Pats tried to turn the game again by increasing their work rate, however Spurs wouldn’t concede and once again, the young legs of the Spurs team put the icing on the cake when Mya finished off her fine game by slotting the last goal to give Spurs a “famous” 4-2 victory. Everyone in the team played brilliantly however Grace, Laura and Bella all had stellar games shutting down the dangerous St Pats attack.

Div.2 Men v Twin City Won 5-1

The reserves came back with a vengeance on Sunday to get our 5th win of the season. The team started very well and had an early goal which seemed to settle us into a style of play that was both creative and for long periods of play, in possession of the ball. We still need to concentrate on our defensive effort after turn overs but we are working towards fixing that. The team is certainly more focused on getting into the finals this year and with the determination and effort that they showed on the weekend, they certainly have that goal in their sights. That win has us in 4th position with the trip to Melrose Park this weekend to take on 9th place Melrose.

Women Div.2 v Twin City Won 1-0

The ladies found themselves in for another tight tussle and once again showed the spirit this team is renowned for and found the winner from Steph due to hard work and perseverance. Once again, the girls put their bodies on the line and there were a few sore bodies and heads after the game. Possibly the longest second half in history was played out as the girls desperately tried to hold on for the win. They did hang on despite playing 45 minutes in a 35-minute half! Thanks to Francesco for refereeing the game, it certainly was entertaining. Steph worked really hard up front and deserved her goal, while Georgia and Tash kept their attack at bay. Overall a great team performance.

Over 35s v Twin City Lost 2-8

Not one to remember except for Kel scoring directly from the corner kick. Defensively we were very naive and played into Twin Cities hands by over committing trying to win a ball that wasn’t there to win and then being turned and left on the wrong defensive side. “No nick name” Edoir had a good game in goals as it could’ve been much worse if not for some great saves. Doug rushed back from D3M to join us but even his aggressive determination was to no avail.

Div.3 Men v United Lost 2-4

Hotspurs Div 3 Men were once again second best, following up their recent losses with a 4-2 defeat away to United. This was once again a much-changed Spurs side, with Marcus Cautela and Jacob Godfrey making their first appearances of the season. Two early mistakes on Spurs’ part led to an early 2-0 lead to United, and in spite of being the better team for most of the first half we could only claw back one goal by half time. This pattern continued into the second half, where in spite of the better possession and chances we just couldn’t do enough to put the ball away, while a 30-yard fluke from United sealed the result. Andrew Bonnetti was once again best for Hotspurs, with Maja enjoying the freedom of playing on the wing in the second half, capping his performance off with a curler from outside the box. With St Pats withdrawing from the competition, we are awaiting confirmation of the re-drawn rest of the season.

17 Boys v Twin City Drew 1-1

The freezing temperature at 8:30am meant it took a while for the team to fire up in this game. The first half saw Twin City on top an they took a 1-0 lead into half time.
A bit of a rocket from the coaches at half time got the team firing and they came out in the second half with a different mindset, and quickly got back in the game. It took nearly the entire second half to get on the scoreboard however with Cody picking up the equaliser with only a few minutes remaining. Despite creating several more chances we were unable to get the winner and had to be satisfied with a draw on this occasion. Suri and Reece were once again strong in the back while Seamus had a blinder on the wing.

15 Boys v Twin City Won 3-2

One of the most heartening wins of the coaches career. This was a great reward for effort. The team showed up after the pandemic break a little out of touch and unfit but has been working hard at training and the steady improvement they have shown over the weeks was rewarded on the weekend with a win over 2nd on the ladder Twin City.
Ben McNay has been finding his feet again after some time away through injury getting the scoring underway, Isaiah Clarke has also been one of the great improvers, tapping in a fine cross from Patrick Mason. It was only a couple of defensive mistakes that gave Twin City a look in. Well done to Tyreece in goals who is growing his game each week, and John Suttie whose speed at the centre half saved us on numerous occasions. A special mention to Alex Blackman who is steadily improving after only learning the game this year. Another big test comes against Melrose this week but Im sure we can put in a grand fight.

13 Boys v Twin City Lost 1-3

The 13’s finally got to take the field against Twin City after a few weeks off. As expected, we took a bit of time in the first half to find our groove again but found ourselves behind before Muireann scored a well-placed goal. For all of our efforts in front of goals we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net and it may be something we need to address over the coming weeks. We have had Sam Beeson join us as a new 13’s player and would like to thank Mason, Taj, Elijah, Billy and Muirann for helping us out, manager Nathan for running the line, both of the senior teams for coming to watch and we hope that you Aidan has a speedy recovery from his broken arm. We are currently sitting in 7th position and take on the 4th placed Melrose this weekend.

12 Girls v Wangaratta Won 7-0

On a lovely afternoon for soccer our girls showed up raring to go. We were the set up team for the day so most of the girls had been around the club a lot of the day, their highlight was walking on with the Senior ladies for their game.
The game started off a mile a minute and we kept getting sucked in to the contest and pulled out of position. With some direction from the sideline the girls reverted back to their structure and this lead to instant success. Pallas who was playing wide on the left found herself in acres of space and took the game on and calmly finished past the keeper to make it 1-0. This was followed quickly with a goal by Mia Harding her first for the club, she becomes the highest scoring Harding at the club with her father Scott still awaiting his first goal after 4 years ?.  A further goal by MJ directly from a corner brought us into the break 3-0 up.  At HT the girls got very excited to see our Senior ladies come over to support them, some were more excited about the possibility of having some of the Mother’s day Cake that the Senior ladies seemed to be enjoying! We jumped out of the blocks quickly with outstanding finishes by both Stam and Pallas to make it 5-0. Our 6^th goal was a familiar combination with Lily N finishing from an MJ corner, I count that as the 6^th this season in all competitions from this combination with many more to come I am sure. We saved our best goal until last, Indie who is our outstanding centre half asks every week can I run with the ball, the answer we give is in most situations you need to stick to our structure and try to get the ball out wide and build. This week we gave Indie a little form freedom in the second half and played her in midfield with 10 minutes to go. Her powerful running from midfield was similar to Steven Gerrard, breaking the line a couple of times and almost breaking the net with smashing finish. This was Indie’s first goal for the club and with a finish like that I can see many more coming. We may need to find a new Centre Half.
Well done to the girls on a fabulous win and a big thank you to all our parents and the girls who helped during the day with set up, BBQ, canteen and pack down.
