Div 1 ladies: Defeated Diamonds 8-0
Hotspurs Div 1 Ladies won the Association League Title for the first time since 2002. This team has made the club so proud and has really franked the efforts that many have put into our Spurs junior and Senior female programs. One of the highlights of this team is their youth that is complimented by some excellent Senior figures that provide leadership like Sian van Gastel, Jess Briggs, Jess Paynter and Grace Rowlands. The team has always shone with its ability to spread the load across the board, no more so than the 7 different goal kickers on Sunday.
So far we have had the ability to add some extra youth to the team this year with Seanna Nichols, Bianca Compton, Elissa Herbig and Indy Wishart all getting their chance at senior level. Hopefully we can add more to this over the coming weeks. Well done on a superb season so far ladies, we look forward to seeing you excel again during your finals and Cup tilt.

After a strong result last week, a win was needed this weekend against Twin City, who are one of the many teams battling with us for places in the finals come the end of the season. After dominating the ball for the early parts of the game, we found ourselves behind after a miscommunication at the back resulting in an unfortunate own goal for Fred and Walshy. We didn’t drop our heads though, and with limited numbers we continued to persevere in search of a deserved equaliser. That came through Lachie with his first goal of the season off an indirect free kick. Coming into the break, we knew we had the ability to win the game. For most of the 2nd half we we piling on the pressure, but many missed opportunities cost us dearly as Twin City were able to catch us out on the break late into the half. Despite our best efforts we were unable to get a point out of a game we deserved all 3. This result leaves us in 8th and some good results in the coming weeks are needed if we want to secure a place in the top 8.

Over 35s Men

We faced a massive test against Twin City the top team in the competition that had been beating teams with ease. The introduction of Neil in the squad was massive as he kept one of their stars relatively quiet the whole game.
We got off to a flying start with Bonners opening goal which was like something from the MATRIX as it all happened in slow motion as the ball dribbled through legs and across the goal line. The Kewinator scored a cracking goal to put us two up and to be honest a little shocked how easy we were rolling them.
Twin City then kicked into gear and we dropped off a bit. Some below par making and a few errors cost us dearly as they went on a scoring spry with almost every shot on goal finding the back of the net. Half time couldn’t come soon enough, 2-5 down at the break.
We regrouped and tweaked the lineup for the second half. Sending Kinno into the midfield and Doug to the defense. The second half was an excellent contest. We kept them scoreless and limited their opportunities. We also created enough scoring chances ourselves hitting the crossbar from a tasty free kick from Mickett and their keeper making a few good saves and their defense desperately blocking our efforts.
Eventually we scored thanks to Jon Coch’s determination as he got to the ball before the Twin City player and sent it through for Milky to score our third.
If only we could’ve got a fourth to make them nervous for the final few minutes we may have been able to claw back a draw but it wasn’t to be.

The switch of venue from Savoy Park Myrtleford to Spurs Stadium on a glorious winter’s day was very welcoming. We were short on players leading into this fixture until the Great Wildinho aka Zava made himself available and also a late inclusion of Jon Coch due to the depth of senior men’s players we now have at the club ensured we’d have a strong starting lineup and bench of subs.
We dominated the opening 15 minutes but failed to make the most of it on the score sheet. Eventually the opening goal came and we then went on to come away with a dominant and comfortable 7 – 1 victory.
Mickett scored a hattrick, Jon Coch a brace and Kel and Jim also scored.
We have now moved up the ladder into 5th and closing in on St Pats in 4th and if we keep winning 3rd spot is still a slim possibility.

CONGRATULATIONS the Under 17 girls are League Champions!!
What a cracking morning for the Under 17 girls who took to the game with great enthusiasm and were scoring some cracking goals from all over the park.
The girls were passing the ball beautifully and creating many scoring chances in front of goals. The midfielders were working hard and holding possession with the defenders not letting anything through. Our Goal Keepers also did a great job and kept a clean sheet. A super team effort overall, very proud of this group of girls and the style of football they play together.

The weather was grand, and the tension was high! With a few big outs in Sasha & Bianca it looked like a tough day.
This was the first round Coach Brad Howard had the opportunity to take the lead the whole game and it was president V president (Matt Burt) today. Coach Scott was a little concerned about leaving early to fill duties play in the Over 35s comp across the road. He left the girls with simple instructions to play our game and show Brad all the training is paying off!
It was fort and won with a 5-0 win 4 Amarlie and 1 to Zoe. Leaving us still top of the table 9-point clear of Diamonds going into the next round.

9 July v Wangaratta
Going into the game with only 11 players with 5 of them already playing a full game for u17g, our spurs did not let anyone down. The fight all girls gave was amazing, and just playing for each other made me a very happy coach. Spurs came out 3-1 winners great effort for backing up after Wednesday night game was awesome. To all the girls that backed up great effort, also to Sophie who kept goals for 3 games u we’re amazing thank u Sophie and also to Mya and yas for filling in for div2 thanx girls Go spurs 💪

Cold night for it boomers were up for a fight , the boomers took it to spur ladies. Ball control let us down in first half, but we come out hard in second half. Spurs threw everything at boomers and still nothing, with 5 seconds on the clock Spurs finally put 1 in the back of net 1-0 winners well done girls

WOW, what a game!
The week leading up to Sunday was a little stressful for this team Manager. With players away for the Rep tournament Players injured, I was starting to think we were not going to fill aside, But in the end we had exactly 11 players but no bench.
Coach Fi was away also working her coaching magic at the rep tournaments, so Craig filled in as coach, and there was no way we were letting Fi down with a loss.
Wangaratta is always a tuff game, but these girls played so Strong and skilfully, with every player giving it all.
I could not be any prouder of these girls. No matter how tired they got and with no hope to come off to rest, they would find the strength to keep going.
A huge thank you to Stam from U/14G for filling in and helping us out.

Div.1 Men

6-1 losses are hard to take but the team showed great belief in each other on the weekend. Zac Fordham was recalled, Jack Castles was rushed into the side on Sunday morning and we welcomed Ramon Saubidet for his run on debut in Div 1. In the first half it was a case of being on the wrong side of some great saves and the post / crossbar to being caught twice on the counter and not marking well enough to go in 0-3 at halftime. We spoke at halftime about that it was not the feeling of game where we were 3-0 down and to keep pushing. Dawso who had played a role at centre back unfortunately succumbed to an ankle injury at half time and Robes came in to help the team while not being anywhere near full fitness because of a knock the weekend before. We made a couple of errors in judgement in the second half to concede another 3 goals before Finlay Wright spanked home a fantastic free kick to open up his scoring account for Spurs. This topped of a great individual performances from Finn (Grill’d Player of the Day) Dibba and Zac Fordham. We are still hanging onto 6th place and head to 4th placed Wangaratta on Sunday.

Over 35s Men

We started off our game in a pea soup fog and ended it in sunshine. In a physical encounter v Cobram we took an early lead after a devastating drive from outside the box by Kel which burnt their keepers hands and looked to have crossed the line but it made no difference when Bonners pounced on them trying to clear it and smacked it in the back of the net leaving no doubt this time.
Straight after the restart Cobram scored to level.
Again we went forward and a nice cross found the Fox on the back post who calming put us in front again. But not for long as Cobram hit back with another equalizer with in the minute of the restart.
2-2 at halftime and the talk was obviously about conceding after we score and that we need to rectify this problem as a team in the second half.
Coatesy showed some magic on the right wing and hit a firm cross into a dangerous area where the Cobram defense failed to clear and could only deflect it in to their own goal. This time we hung on to the lead. Mickett got launched into to the air from a horrendous tackle that should’ve seen red but only received a yellow. Luckily he was able to continue as we were short on subs. Then Brad was awarded a free and when trying to get back up he was stomped on by the Cobram player who was quickly handed his marching orders with a red card and off he went.
Cobram were still a threat and also difficult to breakdown even with one less man. Eventually Kinno got through and superbly scored our fourth and in doing so, insuring we’d take all three points.

With the fog in low it looked like a hard day to get warm for Round 15 V’s Wangaratta. The first time this season we had our full list of all our top age players. During the warmup the girls had a peptalk from Brad about playing our style of from the start of the game.
Just prior to Kick of the heavens opened and the sun began to shine along with the starting 9 girls. The pressure was up and it wasn’t long for Amarile to hit the back of the net from her speedy attacking run. It wasn’t much longer till Harper found some space and got one.
We went into the break 2-0
Half time talk was around the same again and believing in yourself and taking on the game. There was a change in the playing formation from the coaching staff, it was all about attacking from the start. Wow did the girls bring it, Harper keep the Wangaratta defense on their toes being marked by up to 3 players at one time. This played right into the speedy feet of Amarile and in the first 6mins she found the back of the net 2 more times. Gabby found some room on the left wing early from a great ball from Tacoola to find the back of the net.
The coach then made some radical changes and let some of the girls play in abnormal positions. Mia H had a stint up front to try and bag a goal but fell short, Gabby was play up front with Roxi, this is where Gabby grabbed her 2nd of the game.
Mia A, Sasha & Lily (goalie) were dominant across the back when Wangaratta pressed through and kept a clean sheet for the team for another week.
The 6-0 win going into this week’s bye was a great result and the motivation they needed.
Good luck to the Girls & families traveling to Forbes this weekend for the NSW Country Championships!

Presidents Report

On Saturday night AWFA held their 50 year anniversary event. During this they inducted their first 24 members into the AWFA Hall of Fame. It was great to see 3 outstanding members of the Club inducted. The Association and Albury Hotspurs founder Bill Luders, our longest serving President Ian Belgre and our magnificent Matilda representative Amy Chapman. The club is so grateful for everything they have done and continue to be so integral to where we are today.
It was a great night with many worthwhile inductees, over the next few years I’m certain you will see many more current and former Hotspurs inducted.

The previous Saturday night our young Div1 Ladies team went back to back with another FA Cup title. It was a tough battle against the arch rivals United but a spirited second half and a great Spurs crowd got us over the line. This magnificent group now have their sights on the League Title in the coming weeks. Well done Ladies the club is very proud.

This week was another battle of attrition, with a few out injured, sick and unavailable we were able to gain the services of Indy, Bianca, Seanna and Gabby who all did a great job.
Alice had a few great runs down the wing ruled ‘offside’, not impressing Brad who has a sixth sense for these things and reckons we are never offside.
After being down 0-1 early the girls again flicked the ON switch. It was the brilliance of Jess Paynter from a corner that got us back level. Charlotte Laird got another on target before the break with a signature strike.
After the break the girls dominated play and could’ve scored many more goals. It was again a resilient display taking them to 12 wins and 1 loss for the season.
We really are missing the leadership of Sian Van Gastel playing in that CDM role, we wish her the best on a speedy recovery
The next few rounds are crucial to securing our first Div 1 league title since 2002.

Our fixture was shifted to Saturday 3:30pm kickoff.
The team didn’t play that great but did enough to take all 3 points. Our defensive effort stopped Boomers from scoring and all we needed was to finish one of the many chances we created. Eventually we did when our little Irish man scored our winning goal.

Boomers at Glen Park is always a tough prospect and this week’s game proved no different.

We got off to a sluggish start but managed to hit the front about halfway through the first half after some brilliance up front from Julian managed to find the back of the net, but as expected Boomers hit back not long after to make it level at the half.
After hitting the cross bar, both uprights, the back of the net and the keeper in the first half Julian had to shoot through at half time to catch a chartered plane to fly him direct to Singapore to represent Australia/France in the u13s world table tennis Championships (he may have had to get on a bus to Sydney to represent the school at table tennis, but our story sounds better)

The 2nd half started off with Cayde looking lively upfront filling the Frenchman’s shoes but unfortunately he just couldn’t sneak one past the keeper.

We went down 2-1 against the run of play and this seemed to kick us up another gear, we pulled our fingers out and kept asking questions of the Boomers defence and keeper.
Murieann stepped up to take a free kick and from the moment it left her boot it never looked like missing as she proved how hard work pays off as I’m sure she has taken hundreds of these on the training track.

The game ended in a 2 all draw and it was great to see the kids fight back and steal a point back off boomers late in the game.

Goal scorers were Julian and Murieann and our Twin City Tiling awards went to Murieann for a great all round game and to Cayde who showed us what he is capable of after having a couple of quiet weeks due to illness.

Make sure we get to training and work on the things we need to to improve.

No fear no ego no excuses.

12 Boys Black 

Under 12 Black again showed so much heart and determination in their match against Boomers White 12s, despite facing a 0-1 defeat. The boys continued to exhibit their unwavering spirit and fought bloody hard throughout the game.

Cooper, in particular, had a standout performance in goal, showcasing remarkable reflexes that earned him the endearing nickname “Coopurr.” (If you don’t get it, please see Eliza, she will explain) His exceptional saves played a vital role in keeping the scoreline close and demonstrated his agility and skill between the posts.

In midfield, Ferdi, Rorz, Fizza, Tom, Nash, and Jazz battled hard, tirelessly working to create opportunities and control the game. Their determination and effort in the middle of the pitch were evident, as they fought for every ball and provided a solid foundation for the team’s performance.

Mia, once again, proved to be a formidable presence in defence, acting as the enforcer and ensuring that Boomers had a difficult time getting past her. Her tenacity and strong defensive capabilities were crucial in keeping the scoreline tight.

The Goog arguably had his best game for the 12s despite limited game time. Whilst on the pitch he displayed an unbelievable level of effort chasing down every ball.

Despite the narrow defeat, these young boys’ collective performance and individual displays of heart and determination are clear indications of their potential and resilience. The team will undoubtedly take these positives forward to our next game against the league leaders Diamonds Red.

GO SPURS

12 Girls 

Coming if a big important win last week, this week’s game was set to be another challenge. With some big outs’ midweek with Gabby, Zoe, & Bianca, these 3 girls contest a big part of mid field setup.
This gave the selectors a chance to play some of the underage girls from our miniroos Program, and wow did theses girls shine! First half we struggled to get our format correct and play the way we play. We were lucky for Lilly’s great goalkeeping skills to keep us in the game at the change.
At the half we all aged we need to lift and take the game on!
With in 1min of the start Amalie hit the back of the net. Then we had the temp to press on, a short corner called from the crowd made a great team up between Harper and Mia to get Harper the 2 goal. The 3rd goal come from a great driving run from Tacoola down the Left wing to goal and smashed the back of the net! Was great to see this from her as all year we have pushing her to back herself.
Siena, Karla & Cleo all played out of the skins and shows great promise for or 2023 12G.
